SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – County leaders are continuing to urge San Diegans that 2020 is not the year to skip the flu shot as we head into colder months amid a nearly year-long pandemic.On Wednesday, the fourth of six flu vaccine clinics was held by San Diego County’s Health and Human Services in Logan Heights. All hands were on deck with nurses from across the county, as more people are heading to the free clinics to get their flu shot this season."This is a year to be vigilant of protecting yourself from influenza and getting a vaccine, so we don't run into a situation where people are not only getting COVID, but getting influenza, and clogging our medical response system," said Thomas Zurek, public health nurse manager with the county.Zurek said while we can't control the spread of COVID-19 with a vaccine, we can when it comes to the spread of influenza, which hits hard during cold months when more people are indoors.Zurek added he hopes the free clinics will help keep people out of hospitals this season so staff can focus patients affected by COVID-19."Our numbers have been above what we're normally than seeing this time of year, which is great," Zurek said.The county will hold two more vaccine clinics Thursday and next Tuesday:Thursday, Oct. 29, at East Public Health Center, 367 N. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As San Diegans come to grips with the violence that unfolded in a Paradise Hills home, leaving a mother and her young boys dead, District Attorney Summer Stephan tells 10News it is a problem that San Diego is becoming too familiar with.“Domestic violence remains the number one killer of women in the United States and right here in San Diego,” said Stephan.She revealed the County of San Diego had 18 murders last year related to domestic violence.RELATED: Resources available to domestic violence victimsStephan said a third of those murders involved people who had active restraining orders.“We want victims to know that a restraining order is a piece of paper and that it alone is not going to protect the victim,” she said.According to Stephan, the first 72 hours after filing a restraining order are the most vulnerable for retaliation and victims need to have a plan in place.RELATED: Document details chilling text messages sent to woman killed in Paradise Hills murder-suicide“In the first 72 hours after somebody obtains a restraining order the risk is heightened,” she said. “There is almost an escalation of risk.”One important piece of advice for victims after filing a restraining order, is to leave the home the offender knows of.“What we say is for a victim to get a restraining order, but only after there has been a safety plan and there has been a threat assessment by professionals.”Across the county, there are a number of resources available to help put a plan together.“There's a family justice center run by the City Attorney Mara Elliott, there's a center for community solutions with a 24 hour number,” she said.More resources are also listed on the DA’s website https://www.sdcda.org/helping/domestic-violence.html 1769

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine rolls out to healthcare workers, at least four have had severe allergic reactions after getting the shot.The cases include two healthcare workers in Alaska and two in the UK. In the UK cases, both individuals carried epipens.“So these were people with a history of severe allergies and not just severe allergies like you got hives, but they had allergies where they encounter certain things in the environment and their body shuts down,” said UC San Francisco infectious disease expert Dr. Peter Chin-Hong.All four have apparently recovered.At this point, doctors aren’t sure what caused the reactions. Generally speaking, allergies when your immune system overreacts to something harmless.Pfizer’s vaccine has 10 ingredients that fit into four categories.The active ingredient is mRNA. These are temporary genetic instructions for your cells to build a small, harmless fragment of the virus’ shell to train your immune system, similar to setting up a punching bag to train a boxer.Then there are fats to stabilize and transport the mRNA, salts to maintain the pH, and sugar to prevent the solution from degrading while freezing.All the ingredients are considered standard. Dr. Chin-Hong says he was struck by what’s not in the vaccine.“They didn't have egg products or any of those kinds of things that people might be allergic to,” he said. “They didn't have live virus, which might also elicit a response.”The only ingredient with a history of allergic reactions is polyethylene glycol, or PEG, one of the fats that acts as an oily bubble for the mRNA.PEG is also in Moderna’s vaccine and it’s common; it’s found in ultrasound gel, laxatives, injectable steroids and other products.Although PEG allergies are rare, the FDA says people who are allergic to any of the 10 ingredients should not get the vaccine.However, experts say people with common allergies should not worry.“A lot of people have minor food allergies or bee-sting allergies or peanut allergies or environmental allergies,” said Dr. Christian Ramers of Family Health Centers of San Diego. “They may even carry an epi-pen because sometimes it gets severe. Those people would not be excluded from getting this vaccine.”The American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology issued guidance saying people with those common allergies, including to latex and medications, “are no more likely than the general public to have an allergic reaction” to the vaccine.After every shot, people who get vaccinated have to wait 15 minutes so healthcare workers can monitor them for a reaction. Should one occur, interventions like epi-pens are very effective.The FDA said people with a history of allergic reactions to vaccines or injectable drugs can still get the shot, but they should wait 30 minutes for slightly longer monitoring.The odds of having a severe allergic reaction to any vaccine is about 1 in 760,000. That means you’re more likely to be struck by lightning in a given year, which the CDC estimates is about 1 in 500,000. 3048

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California Highway Patrol officers arrested a driver who knocked over a light pole on Interstate 5, causing it to fall into the path of oncoming traffic Friday night.It happened on the northbound lanes of I-5 just before the State Route 163 connector.The driver of a white Chevy Impala went off the road crashed into two light poles, knocking one of the light poles onto the right lane and into oncoming traffic.CHP says at least seven cars smashed into the downed light pole, damaging the vehicles. However, there were no injuries.The driver of the Impala told CHP he merely fell asleep behind the wheel, but after a sobriety test, he was arrested.“He was arrested for DUI,” said Steve Jio, with the CHP. “Possibly drugs, and we’re taking him to our station to be evaluated."Three lanes of I-5 were closed off for about an hour as crews removed the damaged vehicles and the downed light pole.Crews plan to replace the light pole Saturday morning. 974

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the number of vaping-related illnesses continues to rise across the country, local leaders are seeing a spike in marijuana vape users in San Diego. The DEA and local health officials are now laying out their plans to stop the crisis in our county. The number of people who have used marijuana vaping in San Diego has grown, including users who are underage. A study done by SANDAG shows 70 percent of juveniles and 61 percent of adults have reported vaping with THC products. The DEA says the best way to combat the spike is to crack down on illegal extraction labs. "The creation of the vaping cartridge process is not controlled in any way, shape, or form," says Assistant Special Agent in Charge Colin Ruane. "There's no quality control; there's no testing of the product. So when you get the THC, you don't know what you're getting and what you're inhaling."The DEA says the extraction of THC also poses a safety risk to the community. Four extraction labs have caused a fire or explosion in various areas around the county. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed over 1,800 cases of vaping related illnesses in the U.S. Many of those admitted to using THC products. 37 people have died. The DEA is working with its partners and other local organizations to continue to get the word out on the dangers of vaping. 1368
