SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Plans to replace an aging terminal at San Diego International Airport cleared a hurdle Thursday, with the Airport Authority Board's unanimous approval of the Environmental Impact Report for its major redevelopment plan.The new Terminal 1 would replace the current 53-year-old terminal, and offer 11 additional gates and upgraded amenities for passengers, including new restaurants, seating, shops and additional security checkpoints.Officials are hoping to break ground on the terminal sometime next year, with the first phase of gates anticipated to open in 2024.RELATED: Travel website ranks San Diego International as best airport in the US"Today, we took an important vote that will help ensure our airport can accommodate expected passenger growth well into the future and ensure our customers and their families are treated to a better airport experience than today's Terminal 1 can provide," said April Bolind, Airport Authority Board Chairman. "Holiday decorations, seasonal plants and festive treats can sometimes be harmful for pets."Some of the tips to keep in mind this Christmas:-- Sharing holiday goodies with animals can be dangerous. Too much fatty or rich food can lead to digestive problems. Some foods, such as onions, grapes/raisins and chocolate can be toxic-- Ask guests not to share food with pets. They may mean well, but it is important to remind them of the potential dangers. Prepare sealed snack bags in advance and let guests use those treats instead of sharing from their plates-- Christmas trees can be hazardous, particularly for climbing cats, so make sure the tree is secure and preferably in a corner-- Dangling tree ornaments can seem like great toys to cats and dogs. Keep dangerous ornaments such as glass and tinsel -- which can be a choking hazard -- on high branches, out of the reach of little paws. Cords from lights should be taped down or otherwise secured to prevent pets from chewing on them-- Keep an eye on items under the tree. Don't let pets drink water from the base of a live tree as it may be stagnant and contain bacteria. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police are searching for a hit-and-run driver who fatally struck a pedestrian near a Logan Heights intersection.The crash happened around 8:50 p.m. Monday near the intersection of 25th Street and Imperial Avenue, east of Interstate 5 and south of state Route 94, San Diego Police Officer John Buttle said.A man, whose age was not immediately available, was walking westbound in the left-turn lane of Imperial Avenue when he was struck by a vehicle heading eastbound on Imperial, Buttle said.ABC 10News learned the victim was dragged several yards; the driver of the suspect vehicle, described as a silver or gray two-door sedan, fled the scene without stopping.No description of the driver was immediately available.The victim was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the officer said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister announced his office is accepting penalty cancellation requests for homeowners and small business owners who were impacted by COVID-19 and missed the Dec. 10 property tax deadline.Property taxes unpaid after Dec. 10 incurred a 10% penalty. To qualify for penalty cancellation, the property must either be residential and occupied by the homeowner or owned and operated by a taxpayer that qualifies as a small business."COVID-19 has affected many in San Diego -- especially our small businesses, so we want to do what we can to help those who did not have the funds to pay their taxes on time," McAllister said. "We want to be as lenient as we can and show compassion for those who need it."To complete a penalty cancellation request, a taxpayer must:-- complete the request form, print it and sign it-- include copies of printed evidence proving how the taxpayer was impacted by the coronavirus pandemic and unable to pay the property taxes by the delinquent date-- include a check for the base amount of the property taxes owed. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The California Highway Patrol arrested 58 people for alleged intoxicated driving in San Diego County during its annual Thanksgiving holiday enforcement period this year.CHP officers made the arrests between 6 p.m. Wednesday and 6 a.m. Sunday in the agency's jurisdiction in the county, which includes all freeways, as well as roads in unincorporated areas.All available officers were to be deployed to catch drunk or drug- impaired drivers, speeders and other traffic violators during the enforcement period.Last year, 66 people were arrested for impaired driving in San Diego County over the Thanksgiving holiday.Statewide, the agency made 855 arrests for impaired driving during the enforcement period, down from 965 last year. And 44 traffic fatalities were reported across all California jurisdictions -- two of which were in San Diego County.
