BENOUVILLE, France (AP) — With the coronavirus pandemic preventing people traveling, this year's D-Day commemoration is a very different event. For families anguished that they can't be in Normandy themselves, an Englishman who lives there is laying wreaths on their behalf. Steven Oldrid says it is an honor to do it. He is also filming ceremonies and wreathlayings for the families. In return he gets their grateful thanks — and a few items of British food in the mail. 479

BROOMFIELD, Colo. -- Scripps station KMGH in Denver spoke to a heartbroken Broomfield family who was scammed out of a lot of money and who is sharing their story in the hope no one else falls victim to the same scam.Bre Madsen and her dad, Terry, have always loved Labrador retrievers."As soon as I saw Leeya's face, I thought for sure this puppy grabs your heart."But when Terry saw 9-week-old adorable Leeya on GreatRetrievers.com, he knew she was the one."I'd really like a purebred 'cause I’d like to do some pheasant hunting as I get closer to retirement,” said Terry. The breeder appeared to be based in Texas and listed the lab at a reasonable price tag: 9. The breeder even offered free shipping, immunizations, guaranteed health record and was ready to go.Terry paid the amount two weeks ago and is still waiting for Leeya. He can’t seem to reach the breeder anymore by phone, but still receives the random excuse via email, explaining the missed shipping date."Just couldn't get this puppy on the airplane. Things weren't going right," said Terry as he recounted the last excuse he was given.Bre wanted to be sure about the scam and pretended to be someone else interested in Leeya."When I'm on the phone with the guy and he's telling me that Leeya is still available, it took everything in me not to just break down and cry," said Bre.KMGH tried calling multiple times and did not reach anyone, nor a recorded voicemail associated with the breeder. We started digging into the testimonials on the breeder website too.A photo of a little girl in a hospital bed with a caption from her mother, about how helpful the golden retriever was to her daughter stricken with cancer, is actually ripped from an AP article. The picture is of a little girl with cancer but the girl is located in Ecuador, and that dog... well, it’s actually a cocker spaniel.Unless there's a good explanation, it seems like Leeya might not make it to Colorado, so Bre and Terry are sharing their story."It was so hard to see my dad get his heart broken like that and I just thought if there was anything that would help this from happening to anyone else, I would do it. I don't want them to do this to another family," said Bre.For more information about the Pet Animal Care Facilities Act under the Colorado Department of Agriculture, visit PACFA where you can file a complaint if you suspect someone is posing as a breeder. Also, any person operating as a breeder must register and be licensed with the USDA. BEACH LAKE, Pa. – It may look like a regular house from the outside, but inside Meghan Buselli’s bustling home, one room looks just like a regular classroom.“I have Landon who's eight, Sawyer who's six and Levi who's five and then I have two little girls that I fit in there somehow,” said the mom of five, who has a college degree in elementary education. It’s a degree she initially thought she would use by going back to teach in the classroom. However, when the time came for her oldest child to go to school, she had second thoughts.“The age of five came super fast, quicker than I thought,” she said, “and I wasn't ready to let go of our time.”So, she decided to home-school her children instead. It’s a decision that – at the time – she had no idea would end up attracting attention from around the country.“I think parents thought that, you know, we need to think of different options for our children,” Buselli said. That is how, through social media, she ended up in the role of home-schooling helper to parents looking to do the same, in the wake of COVID-19.“They say, ‘Oh, well, I don't have a degree in that,’ and I say, ‘You know what? Think of your grandmother's favorite recipe that you use year after year. Did she go to culinary school? No.’” Buselli said. “So, I always say that you know and you're more qualified in this than you know and if I didn’t have my degree, I could still do it.”In the year prior to the pandemic, about 2.5 million students were home-schooled in the U.S.Buselli offers parents tips on how to do it, such as:Check your state home-schooling laws for the required paperworkUnderstand that not all teaching is done at a chalkboard or behind a desk – she’s learned it’s less about trying to mimic a classroom and more about being flexibleLess is more when it comes to lesson planning – focus more on concepts, not busy workShe said she knows her kids have learned a lesson, when they show confidence in applying what they learned“Another word for home-schooling, I think, is freedom,” she said. She also feels home-schooling is helping stretch out her children’s childhoods, while providing other life lessons, too.“It's just them seeing how we carry on a household, how we carry on life as adults, how we foster relationships with people,” she said, “and then we fit academics in around all of that, with family unity being the glue that sticks together through it all.”It’s a lesson her children seem to be absorbing, as well. 2475

BRUSSELS (AP) — Britain and the European Union have struck a provisional free-trade agreement that should avert New Year’s chaos for cross-border commerce and bring a measure of certainty to businesses after years of Brexit turmoil. The breakthrough on Thursday came after months of tense and often testy negotiations that whittled differences down to three key issues: fair-competition rules, mechanisms for resolving future disputes and fishing rights. In a statement from Downing Street, the Prime Minister's residence, said, "We have got Brexit done and we can now take full advantage of the fantastic opportunities available to us."Now comes the race to approve and ratify the deal before the U.K. leaves the EU’s economic structures on Jan. 1. The British and European parliaments both must hold votes on the agreement. And key aspects of the future relationship between the 27-nation bloc and its former member remain unresolved. 944
