(KGTV) - Several big rigs overturned Wednesday along Interstate 15 in San Bernardino County as strong winds whipped through Southern California. Three trucks were pushed onto their sides by powerful gusts on both sides of the freeway. Video from KABC showed a truck moving through lanes, only to have winds lift the back wheels off the ground. Traffic backed up as Caltrans crews and California Highway Patrol officers worked to clear the scene. There was no immediate report of any injuries. Update #2: SB I-15 at Sierra. Getting lanes cleared and cleaned to allow full travel. Standby. pic.twitter.com/97mdnjluG8— Caltrans District 8 (@Caltrans8) October 30, 2019 Update: SB I-15 at Sierra. One more truck to go! A 60,000-square-foot museum that will include a first-of-its-kind tribute to the 1980 U.S. Olympic team is scheduled to open July 30 in Colorado Springs after a three-year construction project. The U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum will feature 12 galleries that include exhibits on athlete training, the Summer and Winter Games, and the USOPC Hall of Fame. The 1980 Olympics, which were held in Moscow, were boycotted by the American Olympic team in protest due to the Soviet Union invading Afghanistan, according to ABC News.“The stories of our Olympians and Paralympians are the stories of this nation’s history,” Museum Chief Executive Officer Christopher Liedel said in a news release. “Every American can see themselves in the members of Team USA and will be inspired by their dedication, perseverance, and respect for the Olympic and Paralympic values. The museum has the unique privilege of telling these stories, and we are ready and excited to share them with the world.”The museum, which will be open seven days a week, is putting safety precautions in place that will include a timed-ticketing program designed to limit the number of people in an exhibit at one time.Tickets go on sale to the public on Wednesday. 1236
“Tiger King” star Carole Baskin announced Thursday that she had launched a new virtual reality game where players track tigers in the wild.In a press release, Baskin has worked since February with developer Xennial Digital on the game. "My goal for decades has been to stop the practice of holding wild cats hostage under the guise of conservation or education," Baskin said in the statement. "Judging from the tens of thousands of calls, letters, emails, and social posts I’ve gotten after Tiger King aired, it’s clear to me that most people don’t understand that breeding tigers are causing their extinction in the wild, not preventing it. Another fallacy that came into sharp focus was the general public’s belief that captive-bred big cats can be set free.Baskin said she wanted to prove to people that there was a better way to educate people and make them care about conservation than keeping wild animals in cages, so she wanted to develop a game to make that happen.“It’s a fully immersive game that takes the player on a journey where they learn how to track a tiger in the wild,” Baskin said. “Along the way, they learn about the plight of the tiger in the wild and how the lucrative cub petting industry is fueling the demand for poached wild tigers. In the end, the user is empowered with the knowledge and resources to bring the tiger back from the edge of extinction.”Baskin finished the statement saying she won't be giving out any interviews at this time, although many people have more questions about her take on "Tiger King". 1552
1.4 million Americans filed initial claims for unemployment last week, according to weekly statistics from the Department of Labor. That's a slight uptick — about 20,000 additional claims — from the previous week's figures. Last week's report also indicated a slight increase in unemployment claims, the first increase in several months.Thursday's report marks the 19th straight week in which more than a million Americans have filed claims for unemployment. During that time, more than 51 million people have sought unemployment insurance. While figures are down significantly since a peak of about 6 million claims in March, they remain historically high. The report also comes as increased federal unemployment benefits provided through the CARES Act are set to expire. Negotiations are underway on Capitol Hill for another round fo COVID-19 stimulus, but Democrats and Republicans remain far apart on negotiations. In passing the HEROES Act, House Democrats proposed extending those increased benefits, totaling about 0 a week, through the end of the year and extending them to gig workers and self-employed people. However, Republicans said this week they'd like to reduce unemployment benefits to 0 a week for just the next couple of months — a proposal that leaves some deficit hawks in the party uncomfortable. While Democrats say increased benefits will offer assistance to those too sick to work and to those who cannot work if schools are closed due to the pandemic, Republicans argue that the 0 benefits discourage people from working. The report also comes as a surge of cases in the Sun Belt appears to be tapering off, but experts warn that the surge could move north to the Midwest in the weeks and days ahead. 1737
“About an hour before our ceremony was starting, I was getting my makeup done and kind of texting him. Saying I was getting nervous having a feeling that he wasn't going to come. That's when I realized this is all a lie. He is not going to be coming.” — Michelle Heck 275
