If it's been a while since you've booked a flight, travel insurance is that thing that pops up at the end of a sale.“At the end, they’re going to say, ‘Hey, this many people bought travel insurance, don’t you want to buy travel insurance too?’ And I think a lot of people generally, before COVID, would think, ‘Oh they’re trying to upset me and move along,’” said Michael Parrish DuDell, chief strategy officer for Couponfollow.com. “But what we’re seeing, in fact, is that more and more people are saying, ‘I want that insurance I want to protect my future travel.’"Couponfollow.com was designed, DuDell said, to save consumers both time and money. He says the company is always asking consumers about their money and how they spend it.“As we looked closer at how people are traveling, where they were spending their money, where they were allocating their time, we found these little niche interesting areas,” DuDell said.He says those areas include things like travel insurance.“What we found is that 75% of people who had already booked flights had purchased trip insurance. That was a staggering number that is a 55% increase than what is thought of as the norm,” DuDell said. So, why the increase? Travel anxiety amid the pandemic is likely a big part of it.“There is so much uncertainty in the world right now, and of course that’s around the pandemic, but there’s other kinds of uncertainty too and I think people feel like they’re taking a strong risk in general when they’re traveling,” DuDell said. "So if they can mitigate risk in other areas, they’re willing to do that, to spend the money behind it.”Leslie Tayne, a financial attorney, author and frequent flier said, “There are a lot of caveats to whether travel insurance for airline purposes makes sense right now and frankly because the airlines allow you to make changes without a cost and last minute, there’s really almost no reason why you would get travel insurance.”She says these days, airlines are more accommodating than ever. And because there's been so much industry disruption surrounding travel, the future is being rewritten now.“I definitely believe they’re going to rewrite the travel insurance, they’re being investigated right now,” Tayne said. “It's being taken up in Congress in terms of the validity of the travel insurance and there’s some concern that travel insurance might be what’s termed either a ‘scam’ or a ‘money-making proposition’ that’s not really beneficial to the consumer.”In March, the House Oversight and Reform Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy launched an investigation into whether travel insurance provided any “meaningful protection” for consumers. The investigation was spurred amid the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, when many travelers were canceling trips as states began implementing stay-at-home orders.“The evidence shows consumers are purchasing standard travel insurance products, thinking they will be covered if they cancel their trip because of coronavirus,” Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL), the subcommittee’s chair, said in March. “Yet, companies like Allianz, Travel Guard, and Generali are refusing to cover those claims. In the process they are encouraging dangerous travel.”So, when it comes to whether you "need" that insurance, Tayne says weigh your risks, consider where you're going and what you'll be doing.“My recommendation is to try to understand what the restrictions are and what you could use the insurance for when would it apply to you,” Tayne said.Tayne said if you're in a situation where it makes sense, don't make an insurance decision on emotion. Think of it as a business decision, and these days, we're all in the business of saving time and money. 3719

House Republicans are announcing they're leaving office at a significantly faster rate than any other recent Congresses, suggesting Democrats could pick up seats in the 2018 midterm elections. On Wednesday, CNN reported House speaker, Wisconsin Republican Paul Ryan, would be next.Already, at least 42 House Republicans have announced they are retiring, running for another office or resigning outright, including Ryan. They're leaving from all over the map, from southern New Jersey to southern New Mexico.Democrats need to pick up 24 House seats to retake the majority from Republicans, who've had control of the House since 2011.Republican leadership has acknowledged it has a problem."We've got to find better ways to empower people where they feel like this is worth their time," Rep. Pete Sessions of Texas, a former two-term National Republican Congressional Committee chair who met with several members to discuss retirements, told the National Journal in September. But the retirements kept coming. While midterm elections are historically tough for the party of the President in power, it's too early to tell how things will unfold this year. But seats are opening up all over. A few seats will be filled by special elections before next November. But most won't.The locations of some of these seats were pivotal during the push for health care reform and tax reform in 2017. Reps. Frank LoBiondo of New Jersey and Charlie Dent of Pennsylvania were courted during the health care debates for their votes. Both have high numbers of Medicaid enrollees in their districts. Property taxes are high in New Jersey, and LoBiondo objected to the repeal of the state and local tax deduction during the tax reform debates. Some states are seeing higher numbers of open seats. And not all of the vacancies are coming from Republicans. Several vacancies opened in Texas, including the blue 16th Congressional District, won by Democrat Beto O'Rourke in 2016. He announced that he plans to run for the Senate in 2018.Seats have opened as a result of sexual harassment inquiries or accusations. Among Democrats, Reps. Ruben Kihuen of Nevada and John Conyers of Michigan announced they would leave Congress following pressure to resign, though Kihuen plans to finish his term. On the Republican side, Rep. Trent Franks of Arizona resigned and Rep. Blake Farenthold of Texas announced he will resign, both following sexual harassment accusations. The campaign committees on both sides of the political aisle are eyeing the 23 Republicans defending districts that Hillary Clinton won in 2016 and the 12 seats held by Democrats in districts that President Donald Trump won. These are seen as vulnerable seats to flip. But many of the Republican retirements are occurring in districts where Trump narrowly carried the vote, like New Jersey's 2nd or Michigan's 11th. Members from these districts could have faced tough re-elections this year, when Democrats are expected to be strong performers, potentially regaining control of the House.Republicans who say they will run for other offices are more likely to come from districts where Trump performed well. These members vote in alignment with the President at a high rate. They may count on continued support from his base to propel them into higher office. With few exceptions, the Republicans and Democrats who are retiring largely vote along party lines. They also have levels of support for the President's agenda similar to those of their respective parties.Past research has found the emergence of "strategic retirement" by politicians when they think re-election is less likely. The recent results in Virginia and subsequent Republican departures suggest this phenomenon may be in effect. Here is the full list of representatives so far who have announced that they plan to leave office, broken down by whether they said they will resign, retire or run for another office. Some members resigned before their terms ended. While the number of Democrats and Republicans planning to run for another office is close in number, the number of House Republican retirements dwarfs those announced by Democrats. Members from either party planning to run for another office tend to run for Senate seats or governorships.Scandal has also led to some resignations. Rep. Tim Murphy of Pennsylvania announced he would retire after the anti-abortion GOP congressman admitted that he had had an affair and had urged an abortion.  4465

Human remains were found in several bags along the beach in Seattle. Police responded to a call last week of a suspicious bag on a beach on the west side of Seattle. Another bag was still in the water, according to a statement from Seattle police. The remains are with the King County Medical Examiner’s Office as they work to identify them and a possible cause of death.A person who lives near the beach told a local station they were shocked by the terrible news, “but some of these things have happened before around here. There have been deaths down here a couple times." 582

IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - The daughter of PGA star Phil Mickelson will make her acting debut in a movie partially shot in San Diego.Sophia Mickelson has a featured role in Ruta Madre, a coming of age story about a singer who discovers his family and roots on a road trip through Baja.According to the movie's website, Ruta Madre deals with issues of self-identity in a bi-national region."It reflects the feeling of many Latinos, especially Mexicans, who have emigrated or were born here, but who have not they feel neither from here nor from there,” director and screenwriter Agustín Casta?eda said in a 2016 interview.Mickelson plays "Daisy," the lead character's childhood crush. She says the story has meaning for people on both sides of the border.RELATED: San Diego film highlights bi-cultural relationship with Mexico"One of the messages that stood out a lot to me is the importance of family," says Mickelson. "Having strong roots in the SD community as well made me want to revisit those kind of family connections and place more value on it."Mickelson's family is well known in San Diego. Her father, Phil, has won 44 events on the PGA tour, including 5 major championships. He's arguably, San Diego's favorite golfer.Sophia hopes the city will embrace her film career the same with people here have rallied around her father. But she says her parents have done a great job of supporting her dreams while not putting any pressure on her."I think they're very supportive of me having my own path and not having to do anything in line with what they've done," she says. Sophia also told 10News she hopes to go behind the camera for her career and work as a director. She's not the only young star of the movie with San Diego ties.Jordi Bertran, who plays a young version of Daniel, is from San Diego as well. He's known around town for roles he's had on stage at the Old Globe."This film feels like a San Diego film," he says. "The story is ultimately about finding your roots. That's really important now because a lot of times it's easy to forget where we come from."For more information about Ruta Madre, including how to watch it in San Diego, click here. 2180
