WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Mitt Romney announced Tuesday morning that he supports a vote on President Donald Trump’s impending Supreme Court nominee.Romney was one of only a few senators who were thought to be on the fence about considering Trump’s pick and this announcement all but ensures the Senate will proceed with a vote and the nominee will likely be appointed to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's vacant seat.“The Constitution gives the President the power to nominate and the Senate the authority to provide advice and consent on Supreme Court nominees,” said Romney in a statement. “Accordingly, I intend to follow the Constitution and precedent in considering the President’s nominee. If the nominee reaches the Senate floor, I intend to vote based upon their qualifications.”My statement regarding the current Supreme Court vacancy: pic.twitter.com/6YO0dPWWXc— Senator Mitt Romney (@SenatorRomney) September 22, 2020 The president said Tuesday that he plans on naming his nominee on Saturday after the memorial services for Ginsburg have concluded this week. The justice and gender equality icon died Friday at the age of 87 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. On Monday, Trump met with conservative appeals court judge Amy Coney Barrett, who is considered a favorite for the nomination.Senate Judiciary chairman Lindsey Graham has said Republicans have the votes to confirm Trump’s pick before the Nov. 3 presidential election, which is just 42 days from Tuesday. That’s despite GOP Senators Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins saying they oppose voting on a Supreme Court pick until after Nov. 3, when Americans will make their voice heard at the ballot box. Many Democratic leaders have called the Republican leadership hypocritical for pushing a Supreme Court pick through so close to the general election. In 2016, the GOP-controlled Senate refused to vote on then-President Barack Obama’s nominee to replace the late Justice Antonin Scalia, who died nine months before that year’s general election. The Republicans argue that it’s different situation in 2020, because they have control of the Senate and the White House. 2141

WASHINGTON (AP) — With virus numbers rising locally and nationally and the holiday travel season looming, the nation’s capital is revamping its COVID-19 travel restrictions. Starting next week, visitors coming to Washington, D.C., from a state classified as high risk will be required to take a COVID-19 test and receive a negative result within 72 hours before traveling. They will also be asked to take another test locally if they plan on staying in Washington more than three days. The new system replaces the one in place since July, which required visitors from hot spot states to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival. Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser acknowledged Thursday that the quarantine system, which was entirely voluntary, was probably being violated by many visitors. 788

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. economy rebounded at a record pace of 33.1% in the July-September quarter, unchanged from the first estimate a month ago.But a resurgence in the coronavirus is expected to slow growth sharply in the current quarter, with some analysts even raising the specter of a double-dip recession.Last week, the number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits rose to 778,000. That’s up from 748,000 the week before, according to the Department of Labor. The Commerce Department reported Wednesday that the overall increase in the gross domestic product, the country’s total output of goods and services, remained the same as its first estimate although some components were revised.Bigger gains in business investment, housing and exports were offset by downward revisions to state and local government spending, business inventories and consumer spending. The Associated Press found that the 33.1% gain was the largest quarterly gain on record, surpassing the old mark of a 16.7% increase in 1950. 1028

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. employers added 638,000 jobs in October, a solid pace though far fewer than needed to regain most of the jobs lost to the pandemic recession just as new viral cases are setting record highs. The October gain suggested that a tentative economic recovery may remain intact even in the face of a surging viral outbreak. The report Friday from the Labor Department said the unemployment rate fell to 6.9% from 7.9% in September. Eight months after the virus struck the United States, the economy still has recovered barely half the 22 million jobs that were lost to the pandemic. 606

WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Joe Biden is naming Susan Rice as director of the White House Domestic Policy Council. The role will give her broad sway over his administration’s approach to immigration, health care and racial inequality and elevates the prominence of the position in the West Wing.He is also nominating former President Barack Obama’s White House chief of staff Denis McDonough as secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs. The sprawling agency has presented organizational challenges for both parties over the years. In tapping Rice and McDonough for the roles, Biden is continuing to stockpile his administration with prominent alumni of the Obama administration.Under Obama, Rice served as National Security Advisor from 2013 to 2017. She was also a U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations and a member of the Cabinet from 2009 to 2013.As for McDonough, he served as White House chief of staff from 2013 to 2017. Prior to that, he was Principal Deputy National Security Advisor from 2010 to 2013. 1043
