SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The retrial began Thursday for Constantino Banda Acosta, the man prosecutors say was drunk and angry from a fight when he caused a hit-and-run crash that severely injured a 6-year-old returning from a family trip to Disneyland. The jury was deadlocked Thursday on whether or not Banda was even at the wheel. Throughout the trial, Banda sat quietly in the courtroom and could be seen smiling at the jury as attorneys laid out their case.The central question in the retrial is whether Banda or an employee of his construction company, Jorge Adame Ariza, was the one driving.RELATED: Verdict reached in trial for driver accused in hit-and-run crash that injured boyAriza was captured in security footage driving the truck from a restaurant where the two men were drinking.Ariza claims he turned the wheel over to Banda before the accident happened, which severely injured 6-year-old Lennox Lake of San Ysidro. Authorities say Banda had also been deported at least 17 times before the crash.Prosecution in the case say the two men were heatedly searching for a man who beat up Banda. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Three Scripps Health clinics will be reopening after being closed in March when stay-at-home orders began due to the coronavirus pandemic.Scripps says it has also resumed time-critical surgeries at its five hospital locations and outpatient surgery centers in the county.Scripps Coastal Medical Center Escondido, Scripps Coastal Medical Center Solana Beach, and Scripps Clinic Santee are reopening for the same medical services that were available at the sites prior to closing, expect for radiology.During the closures, patients were referred to other Scripps Health sites that were still open.As the medical centers reopen, Scripps Health says it is taking all necessary precautions, including all staff and patients wearing masks, screening patients before they enter, isolating patients with COVID-19 symptoms, and using strict cleaning protocols."We are very thoughtfully and cautiously phasing in a return of services to make sure that we have what we need to protect our patients and staff – from personal protective equipment to disinfecting supplies – to ensure the safety of everyone in our facilities," said Ghazala Sharieff, Scripps chief medical officer of clinical excellence and experience. 1233

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Thousands of people gathered in Balboa Park to support those living with Alzheimer’s disease.The annual “Walk for Alz” is one of the biggest Alzheimer’s awareness events in San Diego. Ken Darling has been participating in the event for the last 10 years.“My mom has passed but, I keep coming back to say thank you to an organization that helps other people going through this disease," Darling said.The Walk for Alz is put on by Alzheimer’s San Diego. The organization offers free resources to caregivers and family members of people in need.“It’s a family disease,” says Eugenia Welch, President of Alzheimer’s San Diego. “It effects so much more than just the person who is diagnosed because the whole family has to adjust their way of life to make sure that person is safe.”About 84,000 people in San Diego County are currently living with Alzheimer’s or another Dementia. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Humane Society and District Attorney’s office are teaming up to encourage people to report suspected animal cruelty. According to the Humane Society, animal cruelty is one of the earliest and most dramatic indicators that someone may be developing a pattern of seeking power and control by abusing others. The Humane Society says when animals in the home are abused or neglected, it is a warning sign that others in the home may be in danger. “Often times when animals are being abused, people are being abused too,” said Dr. Gary Weitzman, President and CEO of San Diego Humane Society. “That’s why it’s so important to report animal cruelty and neglect when you see it.”Anyone who wants to report animal cruelty is asked to call the Humane Society at 619-299-7012. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Registrar of Voters is asking those who received mail ballots to check their mail ballot packets, according to County News Center. Registrar of Voters Michael Vu said his office has received more than a dozen reports of missing mail ballots in the election packets for the June 5 Gubernatorial Primary. According to the registrar, as many as 1,500 ballots could be affected. Though that number is small compared to the total number of ballots, Vu said his office wants to make sure every voter gets the ballot they asked for.RELATED: Early voting begins in San Diego ahead of June 5 primary election  Nearly 1.1 million mail ballots were sent to county voters last week. The issue with the packets was traced to the vendor’s mechanical inserter equipment.The problem was corrected, but voters are still being asked to double-check their packets.“If you find there is no ballot inside or you have two cards, give us a call,” said Vu. “We will suspend the packet and re-issue you a new one.”Those who experience the problem with their ballot can call the Registrar of Voters at 858-565-5800. 1141
