It may have to do with the prevalence of these conditions in the population and the way SARS-CoV-2 attacks the body, according to Sharp Rees-Stealy physician Dr. Abisola Olulade.Scientists are still scrambling to understand exactly how SARS-CoV-2 attacks and kills patients, but emerging research offers some theories.It starts when virus particles enter a person’s nose or mouth. The coronavirus makes it way towards the lungs first, and the immune system tries to fight it, causing inflammation along the way that can lead to pneumonia.People with hypertension and diabetes, the top two underlying conditions in San Diego County’s data, often have existing damage to their blood vessels.Based on early studies, scientists theorize the virus may be causing more damage to the vessel through inflammation and clotting, or outright attacking the blood vessels themselves.On top of that, hypertension is common: “Almost half of all adults in the United States have hypertension,” Dr. Olulade said. “45 percent.”Patients with cardiac disease, like coronary heart disease and congestive heart failure, have existing damage to their heart.Early research shows the coronavirus can cause inflammation of the heart muscle. It might also damage the heart indirectly, as the fight with the immune system in the lungs lowers oxygen levels in the blood.“If your heart isn’t pumping enough oxygen out to the blood, that amplifies the risk and the threat of dying from COVID,” Dr. Olulade said.Patients with dementia, the fourth most common condition on the list, already have an elevated risk of dying from pneumonia, one of the calling cards of a severe COVID-19 infection. People with diabetes also have a risk of pneumonia. In fact, the risk is so high, the CDC recommends patients with diabetes get a pneumonia vaccination.For individuals with chronic kidney disease, scientists aren’t yet sure if the virus attacks the kidneys directly or the kidneys get hit with collateral damage from other body system failures.Regardless of the underlying condition, Dr. Olulade said taking steps to treat and keep it under control can greatly reduce your risk from the coronavirus.Individuals with mild or controlled asthma, for example, are not considered to be at higher risk of severe illness, she said.San Diego County’s list does not include two underlying conditions considered high risk by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: cancer and sickle cell disease.That might be because the 626 deaths are a small sample size, Dr. Olulade said. 3525

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Medical Examiner's office released new details about the two victims, an 80-year-old man and his 9-year-old granddaughter, that were killed in a early Monday morning La Jolla house fire.Angie Keefe, her 11-year-old sister, and their father were spending the night at their grandfather's house Sunday. The girls and their grandfather were sleeping upstairs at the home on 548 Caminito La Paz, near La Jolla Parkway.The children's father told police he was "downstairs smoking by the fireplace while the decedent was asleep in his upstairs bedroom and his granddaughters were asleep in another upstairs bedroom," the county medical examiner's office said.The children's father told investigators that he poured kerosene on a t-shirt and burned it in the fireplace then fell asleep. The father said he was awoken at around 3:40 a.m. Monday when the fire spread to the living room. A neighbor called police five minutes later while the father tried putting out the fire.With the home engulfed in flames, he ran to the back of the house and yelled for the siblings to jump from the second floor. The older sister jumped into her father's arms but his 9 year-old daughter, who had autism and was non-verbal, remained in her bed.It took crews hours to put out the blaze which destroyed the home."Firemen located the remains of the decedent next to his bed and found his 9 year-old granddaughter in her bed, amongst the debris after the fire had been contained," the county medical examiner's office said. "They were both pronounced dead at the scene."The children's father suffered unspecified burn-related injuries and was taken to the hospital. The injured man's daughter accompanied him to the hospital, but there is no word on if she sustained any injuries.The county medical examiner's office said Robert Keefe and his granddaughter suffered "thermal injuries with inhalation of products of combustion." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The owner of Waypoint Public in North Park has found a way to help his business rebound from the Coronavirus Pandemic, while also assisting other businesses to do the same.John Pani invited Dang Brothers Pizza to set up a shop inside his restaurant."I've got a 5,000 square foot restaurant," says Pani. "Doing what we were doing at Waypoint, we could have done that in a 500 square foot restaurant."Pani closed Waypoint in mid-March before County Health Officials imposed a stay at home order. During the closure, he worried about his 130 employees and wanted to find a way to put them back to work.Pani decided to reopen with a limited menu of take-out items that his chefs could prepare.Then in June, he asked a friend who runs Dang Brothers to join him."They're mostly catering and special events. They don't have a brick and mortar shop," Pani says. "I told him, 'Hey man, come set your tent up.' So we craned in a little pizza oven onto our patio and got going."Pani says the response has been fantastic. Now he wants to invite other vendors to set up in his restaurant. He thinks it could create a street-market style environment that will give people a reason to come back to North Park."We have to find a new normal," Pani says. "I don't think we're going to be packing in restaurants any time soon.
