SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Singer Alicia Keys and her husband, rapper and music producer Swizz Beatz, are behind the purchase of a a -million mansion on the cliffs of La Jolla, according to the Wall Street Journal.The paper, citing sources familiar with the deal, say Keys and Beatz, whose real name is Kasseem Dean, bought the 10,600-square-foot home that is said to have inspired Tony Stark's Malibu home in the "Iron Man" film franchise. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State University is defending its coronavirus-related disciplinary protocols after angry parents criticized them. The family of a student tells ABC 10News that she may be suspended for an entire semester for not reporting her COVID-19 test result fast enough.Marc Peterson says that his daughter is a sophomore. He asked that ABC 10News not show her face or use her name out of fear of retribution. He says that she lives in a single room in the dorms. When she fell ill, he says that she visited the County’s testing site on-campus, which is where she reportedly tested positive. Peterson says that she waited four days to notify the housing authority, instead of doing it immediately.“She thought [that] she didn't have to because the test was done on-campus. She thought it was being reported to the school,” he told ABC 10News on Monday and added, “The documentation that she had signed for housing said that she should report results or contact with other students ‘immediately' and ‘immediately' is not defined in any of the paperwork.”He says that she self-quarantined but still got in trouble. Peterson shared a letter that he says the school sent her which outlined options of taking an academic suspension for the spring semester or taking an academic suspension for this current semester. “It means that all the work that you've done all this semester will be wiped out. You're giving up this entire semester,” he explained.He says that he’s part of a Facebook group where dozens of other SDSU parents are posting about similar disciplinary actions for, what he calls, minor offenses during a rapidly changing pandemic. “It seems like the school is very overhandedly punishing students in this environment,” he added.Peterson says that his daughter plans to fight the possibility of suspension with the school.SDSU sent the following information to ABC 10News."We cannot provide specific information relating to specific cases or students’ academic records due to Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regulations. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Pride is calling for video submissions that will be incorporated into their live-streamed event in July, in lieu of in-person gatherings. They are requesting people submit 15-30 second videos describing what Pride means to them. “We’ve learned as a movement and community that sharing personal stories is what pulls at hearts and minds and can help shape policy,” said Fernando Lopez, the Executive Director of SD Pride. But he also said he wants to make sure that even though the event will be virtual, it still creates a place for the LGBT community to express themselves. “What we’re doing is asking everyone to participate,” said Lopez. “One of the things that makes Pride special and unique is that we ask everyone from all walks of life to come together and celebrate diversity and to be together in community. We’re trying to do that but do it in a different way.” The videos will be incorporated into their live broadcast on July 18. As a year-round educational and advocacy organization, Lopez said SD Pride has already moved a lot of its events online. In doing so, he said they’ve actually been able to expand their reach. “When we’d have an educational forum, you’d get 40-80 people in a room,” he estimated. Now he says they are drawing thousands of people to their online forums.“We’re producing more programming than we have ever before and reaching more people than we ever have before,” said Lopez. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Saturday marks the first day of the electric scooter and motorized device ban on San Diego's beach boardwalks. They include La Jolla Shores, Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, and the bayside walk area of Mission Bay.The ban comes after multiple reports of wipeouts, severe injuries, and even deaths. It was finalized by a 5-4 city council vote in December. For the first 30 days, San Diego Police will be issuing warnings. After that, they will be giving out citations. Despite being illegal, the scooters will be geo-fenced to 3 miles-per-hour on the boardwalks. This is slower than the average walking speed and the safest way to enforce the ban.10News met Felicia Minton and her mommy group, walking along the boardwalk in Mission Bay. She said she feels much safer since the ban went into effect. "Is it a good thing. I think people are naturally starting to understand that it's not the safest way of transportation," Minton said. Some people said it is not fair to be lumped in with e-scooter renters who are not good at what they do.We also met Will Brockett, who owns and rides a device called the "One-Wheel." It resembles a skateboard with one giant motorized wheel in the center of the board. "I just hit 1,300 miles on it," Brockett said. He is in a Facebook group of enthusiasts who go on group rides, mostly in Mission Bay, including the boardwalk. Before the council vote, his group submitted a petition to stop the ban, arguing that as responsible owners, they take care of their rides and prioritize safety. "You don't ride completely hammered after a Saturday night, on a dark street with no safety gear," Brockett said. California law defines a motorized scooter as a vehicle that has two wheels, handlebars, a floor-board that can be stood up while riding, and a motor. But the local prohibition includes ALL electric devices, including e-scooters, e-bikes, Segways, and one-wheels. "If somebody is acting with no regard for safety or pedestrians, that falls on the individual. Not on a whole group of individuals," Brockett said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Sara Jacobs, winner of the race to replace the retiring Susan Davis in California's 53rd district, is getting ready to begin the transition to Congress."Kind of feels like college. I’ll be going to freshman orientation, picking my office room, staffing my office. Talking with congresswoman Davis, to others about a transition. And then getting ready so that as soon as I get sworn in, I can hit the ground running," Jacobs told ABC 10News.Jacobs says the new Congress' first priority will be helping the nation bounce back from the COVID-19 pandemic. She says she'll insist any new round of stimulus spending will include funding to help small businesses and families, including child care.In her victory speech, Jacobs pointed out that at 31, she'll be one of the youngest members of Congress, and just the third woman to represent the San Diego region. Aeiramique Glass Blake, an activist and friend of Jacobs, says her election is inspiring to young San Diegans. "As young people, we need somebody who understands the dynamic and the perspective that we are coming from," says Glass Blake.Glass Blake says that while she knows Jacobs will work hard to represent all members of her district, she also realizes the importance of serving as a young woman in Congress. "It’s very important to have not just diversity in race and gender, but diversity in age and diversity in thought," she added.Jacobs has been congratulated by other members of San Diego's congressional delegation, as well as by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. 1551
