DOHA, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Qatar's Prime Minister said Monday that Qatar attaches great importance to its relations with China and hopes the two countries' media could enhance cooperation as part of the efforts to bring bilateral ties to a new high.Sheikh Hamad bin Jasim bin Jabir al-Thani made the remarks during a meeting with He Ping, editor-in-chief of China's official Xinhua News Agency.Sheikh Hamad said Qatar and China share mutual interests in many aspects and bilateral cooperation in such fields as politics and economy have made remarkable headway in the past years.The prime minister expressed the hope that the two countries' media could play their due role in the development of bilateral relations.For his part, He Ping said China and Qatar have enjoyed ever- deepening relations in the past years driven by efforts from the two countries leaders.He said Xinhua would join hands with Qatari media to tap new channels in cooperation to deepen the understanding and friendship between the two peoples.He is heading a delegation in Qatar for a two-day visit to the Gulf state.
BEIJING, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- China is enacting various measures, such as increasing its annual grain harvest and creating new grain safety legislation, to ensure a food-secure society, according to an official of the country's top economic planning body.Zhang Ping, minister in charge of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), said in his report to China's top legislature on Thursday that China would increase its grain output capacity to an annual yield of 550 million tonnes by 2020, which would be a rise in output from 530.8 million tonnes in 2009.Zhang said the country would further strengthen its grain production capacity, by means such as improving infrastructure construction, especially the farmland irrigation system, expanding the use of fine breed and high-productivity technology, improve farming methods and upgrading the farming industry's ability to resist disasters.China's total grain demand is expected to reach 572.5 million tonnes by 2020, and to maintain a food self-sufficiency rate of 95 percent, at least 540 million tonnes of grain would be needed by then, Zhang said.Zhang added that the NDRC and other food administrative agencies were working together in a draft law on food and grain.According to Zhang, China has established a preliminary emergency response system for grain safety, strengthening the production, storage, transportation and distribution of food and grain during emergency situations.
TALLINN, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Li Changchun, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC), opened here on Wednesday the first Confucius Institute in the Baltic region.Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee's Political Bureau, said he hopes the facility, jointly launched by Estonia's prestigious Tallinn University and China's Guangxi University with the help of the Chinese Language Council ( also known as Hanban), would serve as a regional center for spreading Chinese culture and offer quality courses for Estonians who are interested in the Chinese language and eager to understand the Chinese culture.Tallinn University is the sole university in this Baltic country that boasts a Chinese major. It has enrolled Chinese- learning students in the past two decades.Rein Raud, rector of the university, reached an agreement with China's Hanban to set up a Confucius Institute on campus during a visit to Beijing in February. Guangxi University was chosen at the time to be its Chinese partner.The Confucius Institute at Tallinn University will offer the public three-month-long courses that teach both the Chinese language and the Chinese culture.The first set of those courses has been overbooked by Estonians, as more and more people in the country become interested in the language and culture of a booming China.Li, while talking with students majoring in Chinese at Tallinn University, encouraged them to study hard and learn more about the Chinese culture."I hope you can be ambassadors of cultural exchanges between China and Estonia, proponents of bilateral economic and trade cooperation and even Sinologists," he said.He added that cultural exchanges are meaningful projects which can "sow the seeds of friendship between China and Estonia" and play an important role in the overall bilateral relationship."The steady development of state-to-state relations is based on favorable public opinions toward each other, which can be nurtured through cultural exchanges," he said.Raud said the establishment of the Confucius Institute at the university was a landmark event in Chinese language learning and the spread of the Chinese culture in Estonia.He pledged to work closely with Guangxi University to build the Confucius Institute into a center for spreading the Chinese culture in the Baltic region.Earlier in the day, Li met with a senior Estonian parliament member on bilateral relations.He also paid a visit to the Port of Tallinn and was briefed on its latest development plans. The port has been trying to build itself into a regional maritime transportation center by seeking support from Chinese partners.Li arrived in Tallinn on Tuesday for a three-day official goodwill visit. Estonia is the first leg of his four-nation tour which will also take him to Montenegro, Ireland and Iran.
BEIJING, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- China and Myanmar agreed on Wednesday to took the opportunity of the 60th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties to consolidate traditional friendship and enhance cooperation in key areas including energy and infrastructure building.Chinese President Hu Jintao and Myanmar's top leader Than Shwe reached the agreement in their one-hour-long talks in the Great Hall of the People.After a red-carpet welcome ceremony for Than Shwe, chairman of Myanmar's State Peace and Development Council, Hu told him China highly valued its relations with the country, and it was an unswerving policy of China to solidify and develop good-neighborly cooperation with Myanmar."The policy will remain unchanged regardless of changes of international situation," he added.Hu said that with the meticulous care of leaders of the elder generations of both sides, China-Myanmar relations had withstood the tests of the ever-changing world since the establishment of diplomatic ties 60 years ago."Our bilateral relations have seen consolidation and growth ever since, and has set an example for friendly relations between countries with different social systems," said the Chinese president.Hailing the profound friendship between the two countries, Than Shwe said the two countries supported and understood each other over the years, citing enhanced friendship and trust, frequent high-level visits and rapid growth of win-win cooperation in various areas.China has stuck to a peaceful development road, said the Myanmar top leader, adding China's stance on major issues such as climate change fully reflected the interests and concerns of vast developing countries.He also reiterated his government's adherence to the one-China policy.This year marks the 60th anniversary of China-Myanmar diplomatic ties. The two leaders agreed to take the chance to facilitate closer exchanges and cooperation in various areas.Hu proposed to keep regular contact between the two countries' leaders through visits and meetings on multilateral occasions, in a bid to maintain timely communication on bilateral ties and major issues of common concern.He also said it was important to maintain the consistency of China-Myanmar good-neighborly policies, step up efforts in formulating bilateral economic cooperation program to guide and facilitate win-win trade cooperation."China is willing to increase imports from Myanmar," he said, adding the Chinese market welcomes more investment from Myanmar enterprises.The two countries share a border line of over 2,200 kilometers. Hu called on both sides to jointly safeguard peace and stability of the frontier and boost economic and social development of the border areas."China respects sovereignty and territorial integrity of Myanmar, understands and supports the Myanmar government's efforts for national reconciliation," Hu said.He vowed to enhance cooperation with the country in border management, intensify efforts to jointly combat cross-border crimes for sound production and life order of the border regions.Than Shwe agreed with Hu's proposals, saying it was of vital importance for both countries to maintain peace and stability of the border areas. He pledged joint efforts with China to this end.Than Shwe arrived in Beijing on Tuesday afternoon to start his five-day state visit to China. China's top legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao will meet with him on Thursday.Besides Beijing, Than Shwe will also visit the 2010 Shanghai World Expo and the economic hub of Shenzhen in Guangdong province.
