Alberto was downgraded to a subtropical depression Monday night, after drenching the Southeast with rain and killing at least two people.Despite weakening to a depression, the threat from Alberto remained from possible flooding and heavy rains. Storm watches and warnings were discontinued for coastal regions, but those inland remained in effect. Alberto will continue its course north bringing heavy rain to Alabama through the Tennessee Valley on Tuesday. On Monday, two people -- a news anchor Mike McCormick and photojournalist Aaron Smeltzer, of Greenville, South Carolina-based CNN affiliate WYFF -- were killed in Polk County, North Carolina. A tree fell on their SUV as they covered the hazardous weather, the station said."Two journalists working to keep the public informed about this storm have tragically lost their lives, and we mourn with their families, friends and colleagues," North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said in a statement. "North Carolina needs to take Alberto seriously.""I urge everyone to keep a close eye on forecasts, warnings and road conditions, especially in western North Carolina where even heavier rain is predicted through tomorrow [Tuesday]."The storm is threatening the Southeast with heavy rain, as it moves north at 12 mph.Alberto made landfall as a subtropical storm in the Florida Panhandle on Monday afternoon, reaching maximum sustained winds of 45 mph as it arrived in Laguna Beach, Florida, according to the National Hurricane Center. It left 6,540 customers in Florida without power, according to the Florida Division of Emergency Management.Where Alberto is headedThe system is forecast to move across Alabama overnight and into the Tennessee Valley on Tuesday, then into the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes region on Wednesday and Thursday, according to the National Hurricane Center.Three states likely to bear the brunt of the storm, Florida, Mississippi and Alabama had declared emergencies ahead of Alberto.Alberto could still bring isolated rain totals up to 12 inches in areas of the Florida Panhandle and Alabama, the NHC said. This could cause flooding and flash flooding, it stated.About 2 to 6 inches of rain are expected from Alabama to the western Great Lakes and from northern Florida to the mid Atlantic coast through Wednesday, it stated. The National Hurricane Center also said that swells, which could cause life-threatening surf and rip current condition, could affect the eastern and northern Gulf Coast through Tuesday.The-CNN-Wire 2501

After a gunshot wound to the back paralyzed him, Javier Flores turned his anger into art.“For me it’s a meditative process,” he said. “It’s a way I can focus something bigger than myself.”Learning to overcome his own obstacles, Flores is now fighting for more disability rights around the world.“As an artist, I feel it’s art job to provoke and insight dialogue and conversation,” he said.Conversation about the United States' failure to ratify the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, an international human rights treaty intended to protect the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities.“I’m disabled and so for me it’s a slap in the face,” Flores said. “I felt like it was an injustice and so it’s one of the things I wanted to carry out through the aesthetics of cubism.”With help from his art students at Access Gallery, Flores created a piece titled “Really?” in an attempt to bring awareness to his fight.“The image is an adaptation of Pablo Picasso’s “Guernica,” Flores said of the artwork. “Instead of the horse, there’s a seeing eye dog. There’s people of different disabilities and abilities represented.”Now his artwork is on display at an unusual gallery: a pizza shop“It’s not just creating art but creating economic opportunity for artists with disabilities,” said Chris Donato of Pizzeria Locale. This Denver-based pizzeria recently printed Flores’ artwork on its pizza boxes.“It’s a way to kind of highlight the 30th anniversary (of the Americans with Disabilities Act) and hopefully bring attention to the cause,” Donato said.Thirty years after the ADA was signed, Pizzeria Locale is now donating 33% of its revenue to Access Gallery during a fundraiser.“Currently, we have three locations so it’s a pretty good chunk of change we hope,” Donato said.Change that Flores says can help inspire art, emotion and more help for those living with disabilities. 1902

ALPINE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A local animal sanctuary is mourning the loss of Shadow the leopard.Shadow first came to Lions Tigers & Bears in Alpine four years ago after being rescued from a defunct animal sanctuary in South Dakota.Unfortunately, Shadow was plagued with health issues, including skin disease and leaky heart valves. The leopard’s health continued to deteriorate this year, and Lions Tigers & Bears officials decided to put Shadow down this weekend.Shadow is the second big cat the Alpine sanctuary has lost in two weeks; on Oct. 26, a tiger killed another when they were accidentally brought into close contact with one another. 656

A young girl was reportedly injured by a service dog on a Southwest Airlines flight from Phoenix on Wednesday night. The incident occurred on flight 1904, which was headed to Portland, Oregon at the time. Southwest Airlines told Scripps station KNXV in Phoenix that the support dog's teeth "scraped a child's forehead as the young passenger approached the animal, causing a minor injury." They confirm the child was cleared to continue on with the flight. Passenger Todd Rice posted the incident on Twitter, with a photo of the dog on the plane. The dog and handler were removed from the flight without incident, Rice told ABC News.According to Southwest Airlines, the dog and handler remained in Phoenix while the aircraft departed about 20 minutes behind schedule. "As always, the safety of our Customers is our highest priority," Southwest said in a statement. 916

According to a study published by UCLA's Anderson School of Management, the COVID-19 pandemic has put the U.S. economy into a "depression" and projects that the country's GDP won't return to pre-pandemic levels until early 2023.The study was published by David Shulman of UCLA's Anderson Forecast — a research firm at the school that publishes a quarterly outlook on the U.S. economy."Make no mistake, the public health crisis of the pandemic morphed into a depression-like crisis in the economy," Schulman wrote. "To call this crisis a recession is a misnomer."The report says that despite a drastic response from both the Trump Administration and the Federal Resevre, it will take years for both employment levels and GDP to return to were it was before COVID-19 reached America."Simply put, despite the Paycheck Protection Program too many small businesses will fail and millions of jobs in restaurants and personal service firms will disappear in the short-run," the report reads. "We believe that even with the availability of a vaccine it will take time for consumers to return to normal. (It took more than two years after 9/11 for air travel to return to its prior peak.) With businesses taking on a huge amount of debt, repayment of that debt will take a priority over new capital spending. And do not forget that state and local budgets suffered a revenue collapse that even with federal assistance it will take years to recover from."The U.S. lost 22 million non-farming jobs in the early months of the pandemic, the report says. The report does offer at least one bright spot: the housing market. The report mentions that despite high unemployment rates, "consumer demand remains strong" and that markets will return to pre-pandemic levels fairly soon. Finally, the report projects that the pandemic will accelerate some trends that were already in motion, particularly the growth of online retail, telecommuting and rising tensions between the U.S. and China. 1980
