BEIJING, June 29 (Xinhua) -- The number of criminal explosion cases as well as gun crimes in China dropped by 13.4 and 33.1 percent year on year, respectively, in the first five months of 2010, Ministry of Public Security said in a statement Monday.The statement, however, did not provide exact numbers.Police nationwide seized over 351 tonnes of explosives, 1.7 million detonators, 15,000 guns, 1.84 million bullets, 300,000 imitation guns and 170,000 illegal knives since the launching of a national crackdown on illegal explosive and guns, the statement said.The widespread publicity about the police crackdown apparently paid off with 3,099 tips received from the public which led to the solving of 1,538 cases and the arrest of 2,065 suspects, said the statement.Those who provided information to police were rewarded with 960,000 yuan (about 141,000 U.S. dollars) in total, it said.

BEIJING, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese telecom equipment giant Huawei Technologies said Motorola's charges of stealing confidential information about its cellular network equipment is groundless, the China Daily reported Saturday.Motorola on Wednesday said one of its former staff engineers, who now works with a Huawei reseller called Lemko, had provided information about a new transceiver and other Motorola technology to Ren Zhengfei, the founder of Huawei Technologies, the newspaper said."The complaint is groundless and utterly without merit. Huawei has no relationship with Lemoko, other than a reseller agreement," Huawei wrote in an e-mail to the newspaper, adding that it will defend themselves against these baseless allegations.The Chinese telecom equipment company had been planning to tap into the United States market via acquisitions.It is believed Huawei is interested in deals including a 1.2-billion-U.S. dollar Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) purchase of the wireless network assets from Motorola, and Ericssons's 1.13-billion-U.S. dollar takeover of Nortel Networks' mobile unit, according to the newspaper.Wang Yuquan, senior consultant with research firm Frost&Sullivan China, told the newspaper that though Huawei has not been successful in its efforts in the U.S. market so far, it may gain some of the customers impacted by the NSN takeover.

BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) -- Rainstorms and consequent floods have left 107 people dead and 59 missing in ten provinces and municipalities -- mostly along the Yangtze River as of Tuesday afternoon, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.Latest figures from the ministry show that, as of 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, rain-triggered floods had affected some 29 million people and 997,000 had been evacuated.Further, the direct economic loss had reached 19.75 billion yuan (2.89 billion U.S. dollars). BEIJING, Aug. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- Rising domestic iron ore production and slowing steel demand have hit some foreign miners and affected the global market, industry leaders said on Tuesday.China's iron ore imports dropped for the third straight month to 47.2 million tons in June, while spot prices have dropped to about 2 per ton after peaking at 5 per ton in April.The country's iron ore imports rose 4 percent year-on-year in the first half of this year, figures from the China Iron & Steel Association (CISA) showed. But domestic ore output increased by 28 percent year-on-year to 485 million tons in the same period, with output rising 37.6 percent in the second quarter from the first quarter."Rising domestic ore production is the main factor that drove down imports, largely impacting supply and demand on the global market," CISA vice-chairman Luo Bingsheng said.The figures form part of the bad news for international mining companies in Australia and Brazil that provide more than half of the ores to China.Iron ore imports from Australia, Brazil and India accounted for 62.3 percent of the country's total ore consumption last year.Brazilian company Vale already predicted in June that the share of imported ores in China would drop this year.About 40 percent of Chinese steel mills have to make cutbacks or put plants on maintenance, blaming increasing costs of imported ores and declining steel prices. Oversupply in the industry will continue to lower production, further driving down ore imports in the third quarter, Luo said.The CISA will also reduce the number of licensed iron ore importers to regulate the imported ore market."We will announce new rules for the industry soon, which include higher standards on the environment, energy consumption and capital requirement," Luo said.
