An Ohio man slated to be executed on Wednesday will be allowed to use a special wedged-shape pillow as he is put to death by lethal injection, the Columbus Dispatch reported. Alva Campbell, 69, will lie on the pillow as a three-drug cocktail will be administered to execute Campbell after he was convicted for the kidnapping and killing of an 18-year-old Columbus man. Campbell was on parole at the time after being charged with aggravated murder from a 1972 killing. According to the Dispatch, Campbell has pulmonary problems and it is difficult for him to lie flat without choking.Last week, Ohio Gov. John Kasich said that he would not put a stop to the execution, despite a clemency request by Campbell's attorney.Campbell has also requested to be executed by firing squad, citing that a prison nurse was unable to find a suitable vein for an IV. A federal judge ruled out that as an option for Campbell. The Dispatch reported, citing court records, that Campbell uses a walker, relies on an external colostomy bag and requires four breathing treatments a day. As disinfecting wipes and sprays fly off store shelves, companies are looking for new ways to keep surfaces coronavirus-free. Some are looking at repurposing UV light technology, a cleaning solution that’s been used for decades.Ava Robotics and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology partnered on a project to create a robot that uses UV-C light to disinfect large areas.“It was about a 4,000 square foot space. It was able to disinfect that in less than 30 minutes,” said Youssef Saleh with Ava Robotics.The purpose -- cleaning large, busy spaces of virus and bacteria, specifically coronavirus.“UV is not new. Robots are not new themselves,” Saleh said.“It's actually been in practice in hospitals for probably four decades plus,” said Dr. Eric Hill, the Chair of Emergency Services at Medical Center of Aurora. It’s usually used to sterilize rooms.“Anything that the light hits, it can kill. So it has to be in direct contact with the light beam and it has to be in contact for a certain period of time,” Hill said.“There are three factors of effectiveness of UV light, the first is the power itself,” Saleh explained. “Then there's the distance to the object that you're trying to disinfect, and then there is the amount of time.”"We cannot see it, it's the same kind of UV radiation you’d get from the sun,” Hill said. “It works by destroying the DNA and the RNA of the organism. And it doesn't affect just viruses, it affects bacteria, viruses, mold, and spores.”While it can kill germs, it can also do damage to us. UV light plays a role in diseases like skin cancer. “It is dangerous for humans to be in direct contact with it,” Dr. Hill said.That’s why the project with Ava Robotics and MIT also factors in safety for humans.“Safety elements have to be part of the solution, thought through, and understood,” Saleh said. The team is working on making the robot more adaptable to changing spaces, like warehouses, and potentially other large spaces like grocery stores and schoolsBut Hill says UV light isn’t a complete replacement for traditional cleaning methods.“It does not take the place of things like wiping something down,” he said. “But after you do that...adding in a UV light system can really hit in a broad area...and get all the microorganisms that were in there.”Hill also warns consumers that are interested in this to look at products closely.“Several hundred dollars is realistic for a good UV light system,” he explained. “We have seen much more of a demand of it, if you go on Amazon the amount of UV light products I’ve seen pushed out is incredible.” 2591

Anchorage Mayor Ethan Berkowitz has admitted to having an inappropriate relationship with a female reporter, three days after she made online allegations against the married Berkowitz.In a statement, Berkowitz apologized to the people of Anchorage for a “major lapse” in judgment in having what he said was a consensual, inappropriate messaging relationship with TV anchorwoman Maria Athens. The acknowledgment comes at the end of three days that roiled Alaska’s largest city, a span that saw both his denial of accusations Athens made on Facebook and her arrest. As coronavirus cases spike around the country this fall, and cities impose new or stricter stay-at-home policies, Americans continue a trend this year of moving away from big cities and heading to affordable, smaller metro areas or suburbs.In the last few months, Santa Barbara, Louisville, Buffalo, Burlington, and El Paso were the top five cities with more people looking to move there compared to people looking to leave, according to data from Redfin, a home listing company.Redfin looked at data from the third quarter of 2020, and compared it to data from 2019 about how many people were looking into moving to or leaving certain metro areas.“Remote work has opened up a whole new world of possibilities when it comes to buying a home,” said Redfin chief economist Daryl Fairweather in a release from the company. “Many residents of expensive areas like New York or Los Angeles couldn’t manage to afford rent and save for a home at the same time. So it’s no wonder that these folks are looking to buy homes in much more affordable places like Louisville and Little Rock.”Previous reports have shown similar trends in 2020, as the number of vacancies continue to climb in places like Manhattan, home prices are increasing and supply is dwindling in suburbs and smaller cities.An August report from HireaHelper.com, a website that helps with movers, found high-rent cities like San Francisco and New York saw more people leaving than moving in; both cities had 80 percent more people moving out of the area than moving in. Meanwhile, the state of Idaho saw an increase of 194 percent more people moving in compared to leaving.In the Redfin data, Santa Barbara seems like an expensive outlier in the list of affordable cities. The other cities on the top ten list all have median home prices below the national average of 4,000.“Santa Barbara has become even more popular since the beginning of the pandemic as remote workers leave dense cities for picturesque places with more open spaces and beaches. Another advantage is that it’s not too far from Los Angeles, so remote workers have the option of commuting one or two days a week when offices open,” said California Redfin agent John Burdick in a statement.Overall, Redfin says 29 percent of people looking for homes on their sites in the third quarter of 2020 were looking to move to a different city. 2370

An unauthorized vehicle drove onto Travis Air Force Base in Northern California, crashed and erupted into flames, killing the driver, authorities said.There were no other fatalities in the security breach Wednesday night, the base said in a statement. It did not identify the driver, but said the car "gained unauthorized access" through the main gate."Travis AFB security forces immediately responded," the statement said. "Additionally, the base's explosive ordnance disposal team, office of special investigations and other responders were on scene."It's unclear whether the crash was deliberate. The Air Force and the FBI are investigating."The investigation is ongoing and there are no current known threats to the base or community," the base said. " The main gate has reopened and all other facilities are operating as normal."Travis Air Force Base is home to 10,000 military personnel, and a major hub for logistics and military cargo in the Pacific. It's the largest military aerial port in the US, and includes facilities for airlift and aerial refueling.The base is located in Solano County and is midway between Sacramento and San Francisco."The safety and welfare of our airmen, their families and our local community is our top priority," said Col.
