BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. - Up and down South Florida, garbage can be found along our streets, parking lots, and sidewalks.A Boynton Beach man and his group of volunteers, known as the "Litter Hikers of America," are trying to reverse the trend to create a litter-free environment.Sunrises in sunny South Florida are a special moment."Really nice and calming for me. I enjoy it," said Richard Reyes. "This is my coffee right here."Reyes takes it in every morning before checking his tools, supplies, and his route for the day."Going to be a very good day. Hope to get lots of litter," said Reyes.On this day, he and his crew were on Federal Highway in Boynton Beach."When I walk, I do the median and crew does the sides," said Reyes, who was joined by his friends Suzie and Shawn.They have quite a few fans. The three of them search the streets, sidewalks, and parking lots."I have a facemask, gloves," said Reyes as he picked up trash.There are bad surprises and sometimes good. On this day the Publix parking lot was clean.No matter the weather, Reyes is out there."Six times a week. Sometimes seven," said Reyes.Reyes has been picking up trash since his days on the west coast of Florida, back when life threw him a curveball."Aortic valve replacement and an aneurism repaired," said Reyes.Following his recovery, Reyes started walking and gathering trash."I can’t go long distances like I used to. So walking is very healthy for me and that’s a big reason why I do it," said Reyes. "I came out here and continue the effort in Boynton Beach."At the end of his cleanups, he weighs his garbage. BETHESDA, Maryland — The Montgomery County Police press office said Tuesday afternoon that it received a call to assist for a report of an active shooter at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.Around 3:15 p.m. Eastern, reports indicated it was a drill, not an actual active shooter situation.During the situation, Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger, D-Maryland, tweeted about it from inside the center."I am currently at Walter Reed Medical in Bethesda where we've been told there is an active shooter," Ruppersberger said. "I am currently safe in a conference room w/ approx 40 others."Two individuals separately told CNN they were inside the building at Walter Reed just before 3 p.m. Tuesday and were told to continue to shelter in place. BENTONVILLE, Ark. – Walmart announced Wednesday that it has revamped its Black Friday plans to help provide a safer and more convenient shopping experience amid the coronavirus pandemic.The retail giant says it will spread out its Black Friday savings from one single day to three different events throughout November to bring customers “Black Friday Deals for Days.”The company says each savings event will begin online at Walmart.com and continue in Walmart stores three days later.Event 1Deals for the first event begin online on Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. ET, with new deals in stores starting on Nov. 7 at 5 a.m. local time. Beyond the beaches of the world, lies the potential for oceans of energy."I'm very excited about this because it's a very renewable energy-based technology,” said Professor Bruce Logan of Penn State University.Logan and university researchers recently created a device that removes salt from seawater in a cheaper way, allowing that water to then be used to create a renewable form of hydrogen fuel.“There's a lot of interest in renewable hydrogen,” Logan said. “Most of the hydrogen made today is made from fossil fuels, and so, we're interested in making that hydrogen from water.”That involves splitting water molecules into oxygen and hydrogen. The problem? Seawater also has salt, which needs to be removed first and that’s expensive to do.However, the “seawater electrolyzer” that Logan and his team worked on takes care of that issue cheaply by using a special membrane and without requiring expensive desalination plants. The findings were recently published in the Journal of Energy and Environmental Science.“Hydrogen is a great fuel,” he said. “It's been examined as a fuel for many decades now.”About 97 percent of all the water on earth is in the ocean, which means if it could be used efficiently to make hydrogen fuel, it could be a game-changer.“As we look to de-carbonize our fossil fuel infrastructure, we also can use it primarily for heavy-duty vehicles,” Logan said. “Airbus is looking to actually make airplanes that fly on hydrogen.”For now, though, their device would need to be scaled-up to a much larger version.“There are many nations and companies and nations across the world looking to do this. One of the biggest proposed hydrogen plants is in Saudi Arabia -- billion,” Logan said. “I would hope to convince them that it might be cheaper and better to use seawater directly, you know, in a system like this.”It’s a possibility that might one day create a bridge between our energy needs on land and the power in the sea. 1962
