BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- China on Sunday morning put two satellites into orbit from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China's Gansu Province.The satellites, Chuangxin 1-03 and Shiyan Satellite 4 were launched on a Long March 2D carrier rocket at 8:15 a.m. Beijing Time, said a Xinhua photographer, who witnessed the whole process.The Chuangxin 1-03, developed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, will be used to collect and relay water conservancy, hydrological and meteorological data and data for power supply and disaster relief from monitoring stations.The Shiyan Satellite 4 will be used for experiments on space technologies and environment probe. Developed by the Chinese Research Institute of Space Technology, it is the country's fourth technology experiment satellite.The launch was the 151th of China's Long March series of rockets. The Long March-2D is one of the derivations of Long March-2.China started development of modern carrier rockets in 1956, and Long March rockets have become the main carriers for China's satellite launching.

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- Apple announced on Tuesday that its latest iPhone 4S smartphone will be available in China's Hong Kong, South Korea and 13 additional countries next Friday.Customers will be able to pre-order iPhone 4S beginning this Friday, the Cupertino, California-based company said in a statement.The other 13 countries are Albania, Armenia, Bulgaria, El Salvador, Greece, Guatemala, Malta, Montenegro, New Zealand, Panama, Poland, Portugal and Romania.So far, some owners have been complaining about the shorter battery life on their new iPhone 4S handsets. Apple is reportedly investigating the issue and has not made official comments yet.The iPhone 4S looks the same as the previous iPhone 4 but has major hardware upgrade inside. Apple announced sales of more than four million units of iPhone 4S in the three days after its launch in the United States on Oct. 14.The iPhone 4S now is available in 29 countries and is expected to arrive in stores in more than 70 countries by the end of this year.

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- The funeral for Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who died Wednesday at the age of 56, is taking place on Friday, U.S. media reported.The funeral is termed as a small private gathering, The Wall Street Journal quoted a person familiar with the matter as saying.The source would not disclose where or when the event was taking place, citing respect for Jobs and his family's privacy.Apple said it has no public services planned for Jobs. NANJING, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stargazers will have their best view of a total lunar eclipse in 10 years on Saturday if weather permits, the Zijinshan Astronomical Observatory under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) said Thursday.Wang Sichao, a research fellow with the observatory, said during the total eclipse, the full moon will not completely disappear from the Earth's shadow, but will take on a brilliant bronze color.He said the eclipse will be the best one seen in China since the last one occurred on Jan. 10, 2001."Theoretically, viewers can observe the eclipse from nearly everywhere in the country on Saturday," said the astronomer.He said the eclipse, the second this year, will last for 51 minutes. It will start at 8:45 p.m. and reach its climax at 10:06 p.m.Wang said Chinese viewers will have to wait until Oct. 8, 2014 to see the next total lunar eclipse.

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- Apple on Friday said it will "continue to investigate" the unexpected iPhone battery drain as some users still see the problems after downloading a latest software update designed to address the issues."The recent iOS software update addressed many of the battery issues that some customers experienced on their iOS 5 devices. We continue to investigate a few remaining issues," said Apple in a statement made to technology news site AllThingsD.Apple released iOS 5.0.1, an update to its latest mobile operating system iOS 5 on Thursday. The update includes fixes for some bugs which are blamed for shortening the battery life of iPhones and other devices that use the system.Some users said the battery life of their iPhones look much better after the update. But according to some posts on Apple's official support forums, some iPhone owners still claimed the issue is persisting, saying they saw no difference at all after downloading the update.Complaints about the battery life of Apple's latest iPhone 4S smartphone have been piling up on the Internet in the past weeks.On Apple's official support forums, some iPhone 4S owners said their handsets' battery drained more than 10 percent every hour, even when in standby mode with some advanced features like Siri and location services completely deactivated.It is reported that Apple engineers contacted some iPhone 4S owners in Britain and installed a diagnosis file on their devices to send details back to the company's headquarters in Cupertino, California.Apple confirmed the iPhone battery issue last Wednesday, saying that a few bugs in the iOS system have caused the problem and it will release a software update in a few weeks.
