SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Border Patrol agents arrested a man after finding more than million worth of narcotics inside his car.According to the agency, the incident began around 4 a.m. on October 4 when the 21-year-old man, a US citizen, entered the I-8 checkpoint.As agents questioned the man, a K-9 alerted authorities to the vehicle.After searching the car, agents found 36 wrapped packages under the driver’s side front tire.The brick-shaped packages were later found to contain 84 pounds of cocaine and four pounds of fentanyl pills.“Criminal organizations go to great lengths to conceal and smuggle dangerous narcotics in order to make millions of dollars. This is done without regard to the health and safety of our communities. I am proud of our Border Patrol agents’ vigilant efforts to keep this poison off our streets,” Acting Chief Patrol Agent Patricia McGurk-Daniel said.Since October 1, San Diego Border Patrol Agents have seized 491 pounds of cocaine, 7,169 pounds of methamphetamine, 178 pounds of heroin, and 383 pounds of fentanyl. 1056
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the Valley Fire raged across parts of eastern San Diego County, emergency assistance workers put into action plans they'd been working on for months to handle the dual disaster of a wildfire during a pandemic."It completely changed our approach," says Red Cross Regional CEO Sean Mahoney.The Red Cross has been planning and training for months, knowing this situation would likely arise this fall.Mahoney says their plan included Temporary Evacuation Points instead of group shelters, hotel rooms for people who needed somewhere to stay, grab and go or delivery meals, and an emphasis on sanitation and health screenings to keep volunteers and evacuees safe."We planned for this as much as we possibly could, but exercise is just an exercise. Doing the real thing is where you have those real lessons learned," Mahoney says.During the Valley Fire, the Red Cross assisted 440 people in 174 families. They served around 9,000 meals and snacks.Mahoney says his staff's dedication, along with 107 volunteers who worked 12-hour shifts, helped things go smoothly.But not everything went according to plan. On the first night of evacuations, the Red Cross ran out of hotel rooms, especially for people who had pets. Some evacuees without RVs had to sleep in their cars.Mahoney says the busy Labor Day Weekend, combined with hotel capacity restrictions because of the coronavirus, leads to fewer available rooms.To make sure it doesn't happen again, Mahoney says the Red Cross is already working on backup plans to open limited group shelters, with social distancing put in place to keep people apart. He told 10News they've already scouted hundreds of locations around San Diego.Meanwhile, the San Diego Humane Society also put in new protocols for safety during the pandemic. They helped hundreds of animals during the Valley Fire, and say the most significant challenges were limiting contact with owners and making sure their field teams followed the rules about distancing and wearing masks."The more people you interact with, the more likely you are to come in contact with somebody who is transmitting coronavirus," says Lt. John Peaveler. "So, we've had our biggest safety precautions on that side."Both groups say they'll take all the Valley Fire experience and put it to use in the next disaster. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Custom churros are the latest foodie find on Kearny Mesa's bustling Convoy Street culinary scene.Churreria is taking the classic dessert treat and adding their own twist. The churro stop gives customers the chance to customize their churro with toppings like bacon, coconut, and even fruity pebbles. Better yet, churros are made right before customers' eyes.Nicholas Tran, owner of Churreria, said the idea for a churro shop developed after a trip by the border.RELATED: 10 must-eat restaurants on San Diego's Convoy Street"We saw this kiosk and they were having these churros from this little stand. And I was 'Oh my god. That's a fantastic idea,'" Tran said. "Everyone loves churros!"Tran's wife and his business partner embarked to Spain to develop how they would make their churros. The main difference, Tran, said is the basic ingredients.Traditional North American churros contain egg, milk, and butter. Spanish churros, though, are made from just flour, water, salt, and oil."It's vegan and vegetarian. It's good for people who are lactose intolerant or who have a dairy intolerance or with eggs," Tran. "This happens to be a healthy churro. Customers order whether they want their churro stuffed with Nutella or sweet cream or not, and then they can choose from different glazes and toppings, including sprinkles, nuts, and cookie crumbs."There's nothing to hide. We want to show you we make it from scratch and it's clean," Tran said.Another fun aspect of Churreria is its sustainability arm.Tran worked with his business partner to do something good with their cooking oil after use. The pair settled on donating the used oil to two areas: A local company that repurposes cooking oil into biofuel and a shelter that uses the oil for soap for homeless individuals."We try to put back into the community instead of just dumping the grease ... and having it hauled away," Tran said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Crowds have been sparse at Balboa Park since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, but that doesn't mean the park hasn't been busy."The change in Balboa Park is evident. The change in Balboa Park is important," says Peter Comiskey, the Executive Director of the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership.Comiskey says nearly every museum in the park has used the unexpected downtime to refresh their exhibits or renovate their facility. That includes large-scale renovations at the Timken and Mingei Museums."While they've been closed, they've been taking advantage of, in some cases, completely removing all of their pieces and reworking their entire buildings," says Comiskey.RELATED: Observation Wheel could bring people back to the parkBut it's not just museums. The 100-year old carousel is getting refurbished. Crews are almost finished building an observation deck around the Morton Bay Fig Tree. Five new cottages in the International Village are about to open up, housing 9 new cultural groups. "We want to do our part to help elevate the Palisades and revitalize it in the way that Plaza de Panama was."The pandemic allowed the Comic-Con Museum to get a head start on their online offerings, while still working on building renovations and exhibit planning.The Starlight plans show new terraced lawn seating, nature gardens, walking trails, and smaller stages surrounding the main bowl.Save Starlight President Steve Stopper says work is already underway on some of the smaller parts of the renovation, so they can build excitement over the coming months."It creates a window for people to get behind the idea," he says. "They can see this is really viable for the future."Stopper says it's an exciting time to be around the park, as it adds more gems to the Crown Jewel of San Diego. 2669
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Ask anyone, and they'll probably tell you they're going through "COVID Fatigue."It's a thing. In fact, UC Davis Health defines it in a study as tired of being cooped up, tired of being careful, and scared. But what if we told you we could end this pandemic in just five weeks? An MIT-trained physicist claims he has a theory that can do just that."I am a physicist and complexity scientist, and I've been working on pandemics for 15 years," said Dr. Yaneer Bar-Yam from his Massachusetts home.Dr. Bar-Yam is president of the New England Complex Systems Institute. He's a data scientist who studies pandemics and is an expert in controlling infectious diseases. His recommendations were partly responsible for stopping Ebola in 2014, and he claims his complex theory could do the same to stop COVID-19 before a vaccine arrives."The crazy thing is we're always just about five weeks away from getting rid of this disease," said Dr. Bar-Yam.Sounds promising, but his theory takes discipline."What we really need to do is implement a set of very strong actions," added Dr. Bar-Yam.Those actions are on his website EndCoronavirus.org. There are nine specific measures to crush COVID-19 in just five weeks and fully reopen our economy, our schools, and our lives."The most important thing locally is staying away from other people because the way the disease transmits is by breathing the same air or touching the same surfaces," said Dr. Bar-Yam.One of those measures is a lockdown. But not what you might envision, by being cooped up and unable to leave your house. Dr. Bar-Yam uses a theory called Green Zones, something we could even do at the county level. The goal is to go from neighborhood to neighborhood, on a micro-community level, getting coronavirus cases down to zero."You don't want to travel to other neighborhoods or other areas because that's how you transmit the disease from area to area," said Dr. Bar-Yam.The first two weeks are used to isolate cases and stop transmission for 14 consecutive days. If you're not in a green zone, you can't travel outside your neighborhood. Then, the next two to three weeks are used to effectively test, trace, and isolate anyone capable of transmitting the virus until your community is down to zero cases. Dr. Bar-Yam describes what we're doing now as fighting a house fire by attacking the fire in only one room."That's right, it's all over the place, and we're constantly trying to deal with it. And we have to take super aggressive actions if the fire is burning all of the time," he said.If you don't think it can work, know this: his method was practiced in Ireland, Iceland, and numerous other countries, including New Zealand, where less than five cases a day have been reported since May 3. And yes, it even worked for the most part in China with it's 1.4 billion people. But here's the catch: one of the nine measures to crush COVID is "getting everyone on board." As we've seen recently in Ocean Beach or the religious gathering in Cardiff with people packed together without masks, that's a hard thing to do."Everyone has to say, 'Yes, we're going to do this together. And it's our responsibility,'" said Dr. Bar-Yam. "You can't wait for the government. You can't wait for the mayor, or the county, or the state. It has to be a community decision to do this." 3348
