SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Amber Robinson is a decorated army combat veteran who enlisted following Sept. 11. She served a decade as a photojournalist on three deployments in the Kunar Province, one of the most dangerous regions in Afghanistan."I was in the country when special forces went in for Osama bin Laden, watching as they took him out," Robinson said.The deployments took a toll in 2013 when she watched four young soldiers being laid to rest."I remember watching these kids and didn't want to hear anymore that they didn't make it home," said Robinson.She is now a disabled vet with an autoimmune disease and PTSD. She helped create the non-profit American History Theater, which fights for veteran's rights and raises awareness about veterans' issues, like PTSD.She says that having the freedom to vote has never meant more."I feel like it is more important than ever been people are anticipating this and are really excited to vote," Robinson said. "Be an American, that's what beautiful. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Airbnb says it has cracked down on 17 listings in San Diego County that have received complaints or have violated policies surrounding parties.The rental booking company says the listings have either been suspended or removed from its platform following Airbnb's ban on parities and events at listings until further notice.The listings disciplined were located in the San Diego, Escondido, La Mesa, Clairemont Mesa, Linda Vista, Mission Bay Park, North Park, Pacific Beach, Peninsula, Southeastern San Diego, and Uptown.RELATED: San Diego shuts down Bankers Hill Airbnb ‘party house’ over COVID-19 concerns, other violations"In this current environment, it’s more important than ever before to prevent large parties and gatherings, and we support the efforts of local officials to put a stop to this irresponsible behavior," said John Choi, Airbnb’s Director of Public Policy in San Diego. Earlier this month, a guest held an unauthorized party at a home in Sacramento County, ending with three people being shot and injured at the party. The house-sharing company has also made it more challenging for some guests under the age of 25 from booking rentals in their region unless they have a number of positive reviews. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman was sexually assaulted by the driver of a vehicle she confused for the ride she had requested in Hillcrest, San Diego Police said Friday.The woman left a business on University Ave. Wednesday night about 11 p.m. and entered the vehicle waiting in the roadway, according to investigators.A short time later, the male driver sexually assaulted the woman.Detectives say the woman was released and police were called.The victim described the attacker as a Hispanic man, about 40 years old, with a receding hair line and a mustache. San Diego Police released a composite sketch of the man. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After moving to San Diego almost three years ago, Derek and Terri Ruff are on a mission to experience everything the city has to offer. “Yes we are, it’s fantastic! We hardly leave the county, there’s just so much to do," said Derek.The couple moved here from New Mexico, and for nine years Derek's colon cancer seemed to be behind them. “I won’t say cancer-free, but I didn’t have any symptoms for years, until last May, whenever I came in for a checkup, and they discovered cancer again," said Derek.It was stage IV metastatic colon cancer.“It’s a lot. It’s a tough diagnosis, it’s really difficult to live through.”After three months of aggressive chemotherapy, Ruff's condition only got worse. His journey brought him to UC San Diego Health's Moores Cancer for a clinical trial, which unfortunately did not work. But he Ruff became a candidate for another trial involving natural killer cells created from stem cells.“These are patients who don’t have a lot of good options in terms of chemotherapy or immunotherapy," said Dr. Sandip Patel, a medical oncologist who is leading the trial at UCSD. Decades of research on natural killer cells have culminated in the new cancer treatment being developed by San Diego-based Fate Therapeutics.Fate is the first to mass produce cancer-killing cells from a type of stem cell called a human-induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC). "The concept of utilizing the stem cells that are within us, within our blood factory, within our blood marrow, to create a master bank of cells that we can utilize to program in different ways to fight cancer with cellular immunotherapy."The off-the-shelf, iPSC-derived natural killer cell cancer immunotherapy received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval to move into clinical trials in November 2018. Ruff is the first person in the world to receive the treatment and got his first dose in February.“Being the first is exciting but it was less so hearing that you have stage iv cancer and you don’t have much of a future, and now I feel hopeful, again," said Ruff.While it's too early to tell if the treatment is working, researchers are hopeful this treatment will one day help many cancer patients. 2212

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego Police officer escaped injury when a driver reportedly tried to run him over Sunday morning.The incident happened around 1 a.m. near the intersection of F and Sixth Streets in the Gaslamp district.The officer was able to jump off his bicycle, which was dragged beneath the suspect’s vehicle. Police say the driver ditched his car and fled the scene.Police said Sunday that they are still searching for the suspect.No description of the suspect or suspect vehicle were given. 514
