WASHINGTON, May 11 (Xinhua) -- Johns Hopkins University researchers have demonstrated that human liver cells derived from adult cells coaxed into an embryonic state can engraft and begin regenerating liver tissue in mice with chronic liver damage.The work, published Wednesday in the journal Science Translational Medicine, suggests that liver cells derived from so- called "induced-pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs)" could one day be used as an alternative to liver transplant in patients with serious liver diseases, bypassing long waiting lists for organs and concerns about immune system rejection of donated tissue."Our findings provide a foundation for producing functional liver cells for patients who suffer liver diseases and are in need of transplantation," says Yoon-Young Jang, assistant professor of oncology at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center. Human iPSCs can be generated from various tissues, including skin, blood and liver cells.Although the liver can regenerate in the body, end-stage liver failure caused by diseases like cirrhosis and cancers eventually destroy the liver's regenerative ability, Jang says. Currently, the only option for those patients is to receive a liver organ or liver cell transplant, a supply problem given the severe shortage of donor liver tissue for transplantation. In addition, mature liver cells and adult liver stem cells are difficult to isolate or grow in the laboratory, she says. By contrast, iPSCs can be made from a tiny amount of many kinds of tissue; and the embryonic stem- like iPSCs can grow in laboratory cultures indefinitely.For the study, Jang and colleagues generated human iPSCs from a variety of adult human cells, including liver cells, fibroblasts ( connective tissue cells), bone marrow stem cells and skin cells. They found that though the iPSCs overall were molecularly similar to each other and to embryonic stem cells, they retained a distinct molecular "signature" inherited from the cell of origin.

LOS ANGELES, March 4 (Xinhua) -- The California Department of Public Health on Friday announced a recall of hazelnuts which might be contaminated by E. coli bacteria.The department said it ordered the recall after seven people fell sick with E. coli bacteria from eating tainted hazelnuts.The seven illnesses include one in Michigan, three in Minnesota and three in Wisconsin, said Dr. Howard Backer, interim director of the department.The hazelnuts were distributed by DeFranco & Sons, a Los Angeles company, said the department.After being notified of the contamination, the company is voluntarily recalling the nuts, the department said.The hazelnuts affected by the recall were sold under the brand names Sunripe, George Packing, Firestone Farms and Northwest Hazelnut and were distributed nationwide from Nov. 2 to Dec. 22, according to the department.The 50-pound bags of hazelnuts and mixed nuts with hazelnuts may have been repacked or sold from bulk containers, the department said, adding people who had bought the hazelnuts should not eat them.Consumers should check with retailers to determine if their nuts are subject to the recall, and if they are, should discard them, the department added.People who develop symptoms after consuming hazelnuts should seek immediate medical attention, the department suggested.E. coli may cause symptoms that include bloody diarrhea, stomach cramps and dehydration. In extreme cases, patients can suffer potentially life-threatening complication known as hemolytic uremic syndrome, which includes kidney failure.Young children and the elderly are the most vulnerable to the risk.

STOCKHOLM, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- The exhibition of the Chinese Terra-cotta Army here was an enormous success, project organizer Sanne Houby-Nielsen said Sunday.About 320 objects, including terra-cotta warriors from the ancient Chinese Qin Dynasty and other terra-cotta figures from Han Dynasty, were exhibited at the Far Eastern Antiquities Museum during the event, which ended Sunday.Houby-Nielsen, who is director of the museum and also director-general of the country's National Museums of World Culture, told Xinhua in an exclusive interview that the total number of visitors was around 350,000, more than double the expected turnout.This was the highest number of visitors the museum has ever experienced in its history since it was established in the 1940s, said Houby-Nielsen, adding that the exhibition was originally scheduled to end on Jan. 16, but "a great pressure from the audiences" prompted the museum to extend it till Sunday."It is an exhibition which won the most audience for many years in Sweden. We feel particularly happy because it was a very good display of the story of the first emperor and the early Han Dynasty," she said."We felt such a huge interest that we have to prolong it. To safeguard peace and promote development, the international community should increase development input and eradicate root causes of conflicts. "Poverty and underdevelopment are the major causes for triggering conflicts and breeding terrorism. The developed countries should further increase its development aid, provide debts relief to developing countries, open up markets, transfer technology and help the developing countries to achieve the Millennium Development Goals as soon as possible." Li said development can be anchored only in an environment free from war and turbulence. The UN and Security Council should vigorously promote peaceful culture, encourage and support peaceful resolutions to disputes through dialogue, consultations and good offices.
