MIRAMAR, Calif. (KGTV) - The F-35C landed in Miramar Tuesday, the first of it's kind for the Department of Defense, according to officials at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.UPDATE: Officials later clarified the F-35C arriving at Miramar was the first for the Marine Corps.There are three versions of the F-35 Lightning II. The F-35C is the "carrier version", the largest of it's kind and able to land on an aircraft carrier's runway.The fighter jet is the most advanced in the military, "everything you look at is displayed in the helmet, I mean it's like in the movies," Squadron Commander Lt. Col. Cedar Hinton, USMC said.Hinton is the newest commander of the Black Knight Squadron at MCAS Miramar, who will inherit the incoming F-35Cs."This is an exciting time in the Black Knight history. This squadron was stood up in WWII like a lot of squadrons, this particular squadron's able to break a lot of milestones." He mentioned milestones that started in the 1950's with the F-9F Panther. That was the "Navy’s first successful carrier-based jet fighter" and landed with the Black Knights at Miramar. Then in the 1960's the squadron was the first in the Marine Corps to fly the F-4B Phantom.In the 1980's they were the first to fly the F/A-18.The F-35 got it's first test in combat in 2018, deploying to Afghanistan, and then in Iraq a year later."They've had some pretty good success with it, I mean it does what we paid for it to do," Lt. Col. Hinton said.It's record isn't pristine. The jet faced scrutiny when it suffered mechanical failures during development. In 2018, an F-35 crashed in South Carolina."I mean single engine airplane, but this engine is by far probably the most advance engine ever built... That engine is more reliable than two engines on an F-18 I'd say," Lt. Col. Hinton said.Miramar has been waiting for this moment since they retired the F/A-18 Hornet last June.Miramar will get another F-35C next week, and a third in March. The plan states the air station will get 75 jets over the next 10 years."We've got to start working the systems, we have to start integrating it with our software," Hinton said there's a lot of work to do to get the squadron up and running. NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A new piece of evidence in the case of a missing Tennessee 5-year-old indicates that Joe Clyde Daniels could still be alive.The boy disappeared in April and investigators have long presumed he is dead. But, his body has never been found. Scripps station WTVF in Nashville obtained photos of the letter that was sent anonymously to Joe Clyde's grandparents.The handwritten letter was postmarked out of Nashville. It was sent this week to the grandparents in Dickson, Tennessee. The anonymous writer claims Joe Clyde's mother, Krystal Daniels, arranged to give the little boy away."I believe Krystal got Joe's clothes, packed them into a bag... and left Joe on the side of the road," the letter says.The writer claims that he is alive and living in west Tennessee, possibly in Jackson. "If we could get Krystal to confess what really happened...with this case. I know it's a bizarre case," the letter reads. The letter goes on to name those involved. WTVF has chosen not to reveal the names because the individuals have not been named by police as part of the investigation. Jake Lockert, the attorney for Joseph Daniels — Joe Clyde's father who is charged in his death — confirmed the grandparents have turned the letter over to authorities. Investigators have yet to comment on the new evidence.  Police say Krystal Daniels had motive against Joe Clyde. Investigators tell NewsChannel 5 she was frustrated with raising a child with autism and was angry the family was forced to give away their dogs because of him.  The letter doesn't mention the child's father. Earlier this year, investigators said Joseph Daniels confessed to killing his son. However, his attorney argues the confession was coerced. To this day, investigators said Joseph Daniels has not been able to tell them what happened to his son's remains.   1940

More than 7,000 people who work at Disney World are worried about the park reopening.They've signed an online petition saying "this virus is not gone, unfortunately, it's only become worse in this state."Coronavirus cases are surging in Florida as the park preps for a phased reopening July 11.Disney is putting several measures in place to reopen safely, but staffers who signed the petition are hoping they'll reconsider, saying it's not fair to ask the people who work there to risk their lives.About 10% of Disney's workforce have signed this particular petition, and there's a similar petition by Disneyland workers in California which has nearly 50,000 signatures.Disney plans to reopen all 12 of its theme parks around the world by mid-July. 756

NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) -- Families in one South Bay city got one step closer to relief from skyrocketing rent Thursday as a group turned in signatures supporting a measure that could make its way to the November ballot. The National City Families for Fair Rent coalition has collected 3,500 signatures from registered voters in favor of implementing a program to stabilize rent.The initiative is called the National City Rent Control and Community Stabilization Ordinance.In order to get the measure on the November ballot, the coalition needs the signatures of 2,300 registered National City voters.Researchers say the measure is important because National City is one of the last safe havens for families struggling to pay rent. "It is one of the last places, sort of the last refuge for families struggling to get by have been able to afford to rent," said Dr. Peter Brownell,Research Director at Center on Policy Initiatives.The city council can now take one of three actions. Enact it without sending it to the ballot, send it to the ballot or request a report from city staff.If a report is requested, the council will have to reconvene and take one of the first two options within 30 days. 1220
