OCEAN BEACH (KGTV) - People in Ocean Beach have hatched a (not-so) secret plan to bring a popular mermaid statue back to town."We’re go-getters. We’re not going to give in. This is going to be a mission," says Claudia Jack, the self-proclaimed leader of Team Mermaid.For three weeks in May and June, a mermaid statue sat atop Ross Rock near Sunset Cliffs. Nicknamed 'Marina', the statue brought tourists and locals to the area to take pictures.For some, it was a nuisance, bringing more traffic and trash. Jack says that's one reason they don't plan to put the mermaid back on the rock."It's my goal to get her repaired and put her somewhere that she'll be appreciated," she says.The mermaid was secretly removed in June by a group calling themselves the Cliffs Crew. For a while, no one knew what had happened to it. Jack says she knows where Marina is located but won't reveal her location."I have not revealed any names or whatever," she says. "It's very hush-hush. But it will come out in the end. In a happy way."Jack has enlisted the help of a few friends and artists to repair some minor damage to Marina. She's also trying to get the entire community involved. Earlier this month, she sent out 300 postcards with a picture of the mermaid on the front. The back simply read "Save the OB Mermaid" and had an email address.She says the response has been overwhelming."What little girl doesn't want to be a mermaid?" she asks.Jack plans to unveil Marina as a statue at the Ocean Beach Holiday Parade in December. After that, she plans to let local businesses bid for the rights to host the statue for a few months at a time. She says the money raised would be used for upkeep.Jack says she already has two local businesses who have expressed interest. After that, she wants to commission a bronze replica that can be a permanent statue near the Ocean Beach Pier.The hope is that Marina can become a local icon like the Cardiff Kook or the Lemon Grove Lemon."She's alive," says Jack. "She's just taking a little rest right now. But we'll get it done." 2087

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A bicyclist was seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle in Oceanside Wednesday afternoon. According to the Oceanside Police Department, the crash happened around 4:18 on State Route 76 at Old Grove. When officers arrived, they found the man lying in the street. He was taken to the hospital with a serious head injury. RELATED: Bicyclist killed in Escondido hit-and-run crashBased on statements from witnesses, police say they believe the vehicle entered the intersection on a green light. “The bicyclist also entered the intersection from another direction on a red light and collided with the SUV,” police said. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - Whale watchers enjoyed a rare encounter off the Southern California coast Monday: four orcas teaming up to prey on dolphins. “It’s very, very rare,” said Oceanside Whale Watching manager Carla Mitroff. The company had a boat full of whale watchers off San Clemente when the orcas appeared. Boat Captain Shane and staff biologist Lauren Turley captured the moment. “They were thrilled beyond thrilled,” Mitroff said of the passengers. “It’s the holy grail of whale watching.” The Eastern Tropical Pacific orcas pass through Southern California after a stop in Mexico, Mitroff said. The whale watching team hasn’t seen orcas in more than a year. Monday, the orca pod preyed on two baby dolphins as the mother tried to fight the killer whales. It's not unusual for orcas to eat larger mammals.“The diet of orcas depends to some extent on what is available where they live,” according to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration. One ecotype of orcas in the Pacific Northwest eats fish, while other ecotypes eat marine mammals and squid. Killer whales are “considered a top predator, eating near the top of the food chain.” 1171

(KGTV) — MiraCosta College fell victim this week to vandalism from a white supremacy group.In a letter to students, university President Sunita Cooke said the incident occurred Wednesday involving vandalism by a white supremacy group.The letter didn't elaborate on what was exactly done on campus, only that the vandalism violated the college's "values of inclusion and serve to incite fear within our campus community."RELATED: CSU San Marcos police take down white nationalist posters"The district strongly opposes racist acts. To be clear – any doctrine that elevates one group above another has no place at this college.
