AUSTIN, Texas – Inside a restaurant called “The Pita Shack,” Ayman Attar Bashi recreates part of his culture through the food served in his restaurant. “We are lucky,” he said. He and his family are lucky because a decade ago, they fled violence in Iraq, becoming refugees and resettling in Austin, Texas. “To be a refugee is not a choice,” he said. “Not a choice.” Refugees like Ayman, though, may no longer be able to count on Texas for a fresh start. Governor Greg Abbott said the state has already done more than its fair share. In a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Gov. Abbott said that since 2010, “…roughly 10% of all refugees resettled in the United States have been placed in Texas.” He added that, “in addition to accepting refugees all these years, Texas has been left by Congress to deal with disproportionate migration issues resulting from a broken federal immigration system.” “There had been 41 other governors that had had come out and said, ‘yes, our state we would love to continue to accept refugees’ and that was a mix of Democrats and Republican governors, and so Gov. Abbott was the very first who had said no,” said Russell Smith, with Refugee Services of Texas, the largest resettlement agency in a state. Last year, Texas took in 2,227 refugees – the most of any state. It was followed by Washington, with 1,930 and California with 1,802. Overall, America is admitting fewer refugees. Back in 2016, President Barack Obama set a limit of 110,000 for the 2017 fiscal year. This year, President Donald Trump is setting a limit of 18,000. Though a judge put a temporary stop to the Texas plan, the potential for refugees to be rejected looms large here. “Every action has negatively affected resettlement at the same time,” Smith said. Whether the plan eventually goes through – or gets permanently rejected by the courts – remains to be seen. Back at his restaurant, Ayman says he and his family feel safe and welcomed in Austin. “You’re an active element in this community because we’re hiring people, we are providing people with good food, spread our culture – at the end of the day, you feel like you are doing a lot of good things in this community,” he said. The Trump administration has not said yet whether it will seek to appeal the federal judge’s decision, which stopped Texas from refusing refugees. 2356

On his urban farm, Sean Conway is doing more than cultivating his next crop. He's helping grow the next generation of farmers. Conway is a mentor at the GoFarm incubator program, which pairs young farmers with established ones. “I wish that there was like an incubator program available to me in the Denver area at the time, because it would have helped me out a lot,” Conway says. After seven years of farming, Conway says he struggled at first. “I didn't really have enough experience to start farming on my own, so I made a lot of mistakes,” he admits. Now, the GoFarm incubator program is making sure these apprentices don't make the same mistakes Conway did. The program is a mix of hands-on training and classroom work, creating a path to farm ownership. “Two percent of the U.S. population is actually in an agricultural career, which is pretty crazy, so trying to increase the amount of farmers we have will affect the entire community,” says Natalie Fioretti with GoFarm. Apprentice Shelby Johnson knew she wanted to be a farmer, but had no idea where to begin.“The odds are really, really stacked against young farmers in a lot of ways, and especially as a young, queer woman of color from the south, it's like quadra stacked against me,” Johnson says. Johnson says thanks to GoFarm, she has resources and opportunities to network, while learning from older farmers. There are farming training programs like GoFarm across the country. GoFarm’s program lasts two years, with the hope of its benefits lasting much longer. For more information on the GoFarm program and its mission, 1602

TAMPA, Fla. — A 10-year-old girl is making a big difference in the City of Tampa.Vivian Anderson wrote a letter to Tampa Mayor Jane Castor in December 2019 after seeing a “Men Working” sign at a construction site where men and women were working side-by-side.“Well I didn’t really like how it was excluding the women,” said Vivian. In her letter, Vivian suggested the sign should be more inclusive and say “Workers Present” instead. Days, weeks and months went by without a response from the mayor’s office.“I was thinking she probably wasn’t gonna get it,” said Vivian.“I told her the wheels of government work slow and that it takes time and we’ll just have to wait to see what happens,” said Mary Anderson, Vivian’s mom. Finally, a letter arrived and Vivian was thrilled.“Happy, really, excited. I started screaming in the living room,” she said. The city is now ensuring that inclusive signage is required instead of “Men at Work.” Vik Bhide, Mobility Department Director, says that will be done during the design review, permit review and coordination of work on all projects. Bhide says the city phased out that type of signage years ago, but they’re now making sure other companies and contractors are on the same page.Adding to Vivian’s excitement, a second letter arrived in the mail inviting her to meet with Mayor Castor.During the meeting, Vivian was presented with a hard hat and two signs. One read “Workers Present” with the Mayor’s signature and the other said “Vivian M. Anderson Way.”“This is awesome! I love it!” said Vivian.“We need that input, we need that creativity, that innovation, especially from the young people in our community because we’re gonna be handing this city off to them in the near future,” said Castor. The mayor sees a bright future ahead of Vivian and possibly one in government. “I think Vivian is going to be in my seat, frankly.” This article was written by Sarah Phinney for WFTS. 1966

Nevada Gov. Sisolak has announced a new mandate requiring face masks to be worn in public starting on June 26.Casino operators in the state were quick to applaud the governor's actions in this matter.MGM Resorts International Acting CEO and President Bill Hornbuckle released the following statement in response to Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak’s announcement that masks would be required for indoor public places:“Given the public health situation and the reports of new cases, we support the Governor’s decision to require masks in public places and will begin to enforce according to his guidelines. At MGM Resorts, we have put health and safety at the center of all we do, and this will be a modification of protections that make up our multi-layered Seven-Point Safety Plan.”RELATED: Gov. Steve Sisolak mandates Nevadans to wear face coverings in public spacesMGM also updated their guest policy nationwide, "Guests and visitors inside public spaces will be required to wear masks at all MGM Resorts properties throughout the United States."Wynn Las Vegas released the following statement:"We applaud Governor Sisolak in his decision to require face coverings for everyone in public, including those visiting a resort. It is a demonstration of his commitment, shared by all of us, to keep visitors to Las Vegas safe, as well as our employees and local community. Mandatory face coverings have had no impact on the ability of our employees to deliver great guest experiences Similarly, we believe face coverings will not diminish the unique experiences only Las Vegas can offer visitors."Earlier in the day Caesars Entertainment came out with its own face mask policy and made this statement:“We promised that Caesars would continue to evaluate the latest recommendations, directives and medical science regarding the COVID-19 public health emergency and modify our enhanced health and safety protocols accordingly,” said Tony Rodio, CEO of Caesars Entertainment. “As a result, we are immediately requiring everyone in our properties to wear masks, because the scientific evidence strongly suggests that wearing masks and practicing social distancing may be the most important deterrents to spreading COVID-19 from person to person,” he added.READ GOV.
