The cost of the Justice Department's ongoing investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 election is now roughly million, according to a new report filed Friday by the special counsel's office.Friday's accounting provided the latest figures covering only the period for April 2018 through September 2018, with special counsel Robert Mueller listing direct expenditures of nearly .6 million.Another roughly .9 million was reported as costs for the work of other Justice and FBI officials who have assisted the investigation but are not under Mueller's direct control. According to the report, those investigation costs would have been incurred "irrespective of the existence of the (special counsel's office)."The department previously reported .7 million in direct and indirect costs from May through September 2017, and  million from October 2017 through March 2018 -- bringing the total from all three reports over the life of the investigation to just over million. Of that amount, only .3 million is the special counsel's direct expenditures.Since taking control of the Russia probe in May 2017, Mueller has advanced on multiple fronts to investigate any links between the Russian government and the Trump campaign, along with other crimes arising from the investigation.To date, the investigation has yielded charges against 36 people or entities. Seven people have pleaded guilty to various charges, including President Donald Trump's first national security adviser, Michael Flynn, former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, former deputy campaign chairman Rick Gates and former campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos.Meanwhile, Trump and his allies have relentlessly attacked Mueller and the probe as a waste of money.Trump took aim at the cost of the investigation last month, offering a grab-bag of different numbers Mueller had allegedly spent, untethered to the facts.On November 27, 2018 he tweeted: "now ,000,000 Witch Hunt continues and they've got nothing but ruined lives."Then 48 hours later, he tweeted criticizing the "witch hunt" for "wasting more than ,000,000." 2182

The FBI and Toledo, Ohio police are searching for a suspect in an armed bank robbery who was mistakenly released from jail earlier this week.According to the FBI, Don Woodson Ellis Jr. allegedly robbed a bank in Toledo on Monday and was arrested and held at the Lucas County Corrections Center. He was mistakenly released on Wednesday night around 10:30 p.m.At the time, he was wearing a black t-shirt, light blue shorts/jeans to the knee and white tennis shoes with dark laces.He was using the name Antwon Moore at the time of the departure from the jail. He is also considered armed and dangerous.The Lucas County Sheriff's Office said Ellis "used deception" to be released back into the community.According to the FBI, he could be in Michigan given his previous criminal record which includes pleading guilty to bank robbery and fleeing/eluding police in Monroe County.Ellis is described as a black male, 28 years old, 6-feet tall weighing 150 pounds.  983

The city manager for Alameda, California, said a formal investigation is underway following the arrest of a man dancing in a street as part of his exercise routine.The man, Mali Watkins, was charged with resisting arrest. Why he was arrested in the first place is unclear.On May 23, two officers from Alameda Police approached the man after police received a report that a man was dancing in the street. When police arrived, they discovered Mali dancing in the street.When asked why he was dancing, Mali stated it was part of his exercise routine.After Mali began to walk away, videos show officers grabbing Mali by the wrist and detaining him. Mali was told if he resisted, he would be charged with resisting arrest, which is what happened.The city of Alameda said that the man is a resident of the city and is African American.“At this time, I do not know the reasons why the initial officers approached the call the way they did. I am hopeful that an investigation will provide better understanding to that question,” City Manager Eric Levitt said.In the last few days, the city has released body warn camera footage from the incident, in addition to a call into the police’s non-emergency line. The first cruise in the Caribbean since the start of the pandemic is reporting a COVID-19 case.A passenger aboard SeaDream Yacht Club’s SeaDream 1 received a preliminary positive COVID-19 test.According to passengers, the captain informed them about the preliminary positive test over the ship’s intercom system while they were anchored off the coast of Grenadines.The vessel is now headed back to Barbados, where it is based.The SeaDream is carrying 53 passengers and 66 crew, with the majority of passengers hailing from the U.S. according to Sue Bryant, who is aboard the ship and is a cruise editor for The Times and The Sunday Times in Britain.The SeaDream is the first vessel to resume sailing in the Caribbean since earlier this year when coronavirus pandemic concerns docked the cruise industry following high profile infections.Passengers were tested both in advance of traveling, before boarding, and again a few days into the trip.The SeaDream has a capacity of about 110 guests and 95 crewmembers. It also sails outside of U.S. waters. This puts it below the 250 guests threshold and outside the area under the CDC’s orders about cruising. 1159

The Cambridge Analytica?scandal has thrust Facebook privacy settings into the national conversation after the political firm used the personal data of about 50 million people without their consent.Now, Mozilla is helping Firefox users keep their Facebook data secure so they won't be exploited in the future.The company has introduced a Firefox extension that it says will make it much harder for Facebook to track which websites you browse.Facebook has developed a network of trackers that tell the social media site which of its users are visiting certain webpages, like online retailers. Facebook will then use that information to serve its users ads based on what products they've been viewing.Mozilla says its Facebook Container extension will make it much more difficult to track which websites you visit, and keep your browsing information private.Mozilla admits the extension isn't perfect. In a blog post, the company said that the extension would not have prevented user information from being abused in the Cambridge Analytica scandal. It also says that Facebook Container would not work well on sites which require you to use Facebook information to log in.But Mozilla says the simple step of downloading the extension is giving power back to internet users. "Troves of data are being collected on your behavior on the internet, and so giving users a choice to limit what they share in a way that is under their control is important," the company wrote.To download Facebook container, first download the free Mozilla Firefox browser if you're not already using it.
