SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego International Airport is reporting an increase in travelers as coronavirus restrictions continue to lift.New numbers from the San Diego Airport Authority showed that from June 18 to 21, an average of 8,679 daily travelers went through the TSA Checkpoint. That's a drop off of 80 percent from the same time last year. However, during the height of the coronavirus restrictions in April, the drop off was as much as 95 percent compared to the same time in 2019. "From what we are seeing and based on our conversations with airlines, leisure travel is coming back faster than business travel, and this is consistent with nationwide trends and reports," said Airport Authority spokeswoman Sabrina LoPiccolo. LoPiccolo says the airport has taken numerous steps to help stop the spread of COVID-19, including plexiglass sneeze guards in some areas, increased cleaning and floor markers to encourage social distancing. The large drop off in travel has taken a toll on businesses that depend on travelers to survive.Across the runway at Park, Shuttle, and Fly, owner Al Cruz says the lack of air travel forced his family to temporarily lay off the lots 15 workers."We were very scared," Cruz said. "We moved real quick, we have to survive. We're family-owned and we're not a big corporation. We don't have a lot of money to sustain us.During the height of the shutdown, Cruz rented hundreds of spots to a rental car company to store excess cars, but it was a revenue cut. In June, he received a Paycheck Protection Program loan and reopened, hiring back the 15 workers. There are now about 45 cars owned by travelers in the lot. Cruz said he needs the trend of increased flying to continue to make it. "If it does not, it flattens out like it was three months ago, we can't survive on that," he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police have arrested a 26-year-old in connection with a Logan Heights house fire that killed three of his family members last weekend.Police say Wilber Romero was arrested Friday for homicide and arson in connection with the deaths of his parents 44-year-old Jose Romero and 46-year-old Nicolasa Maya-Romero, and his sister 21-year-old Iris Romero in a house fire on Sunday. Romero's mother and sister died at the hospital in the days following the blaze while his father died in the fire. The family’s 23-year-old daughter and 16-year-old son remain in the hospital. I woke up. When I woke up, my bed was on fire. I jumped out of bed and started screaming the house is on fire," Romero said after the blaze.One witness told 10News he could see one of the victims reaching through the bars in the windows, unable to escape the fire."The minute I stepped out of my restroom, my house on the inside felt warm, like really warm. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego officials are offering a new location to help temporarily shelter migrants seeking asylum.The city says it has identified a new property to use as a shelter since its current temporary shelter doesn't have the occupancy for long-term sheltering, in a letter to California's Office of Emergency Services."The county recently vacated the Camp Barrett youth correctional facility in Alpine. The facility is already classified for residential occupancy and therefore does not require significant alteration to be used as a shelter," Robert Vacchi, deputy chief operating officer of San Diego's Neighborhood Services, wrote.RELATED: Exclusive look inside San Diego shelter for migrant asylum seekersCamp Barrett was closed in October following years of steadily decreasing populations at the county's in-custody facilities, according to the county. The remaining population was relocated to a Urban Camp facility in Kearny Mesa. The facility was capable of housing 125 boys.Camp Barrett and surrounding property is owned by the city's Public Utilities Department, but slated for sale. Vacchi writes the property could be leased to the state or third-party on a temporary basis to use as a shelter for asylum-seeking migrants.The Alliance Healthcare Foundation has agreed to fund the operation of a facility, according to Vacchi, and the city has been in talks with the agency to secure shelter operations.The city is facing a Feb. 4 deadline to vacate the current shelter being used for migrant asylum seekers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police are investigating following a deadly hit-and-run in Clairemont Wednesday night. According to police, the incident happened around 7:30 p.m. on the 5500 block of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard. Police say a 44-year-old man was found dead on the eastbound lanes of traffic. They say he was struck by a car, which fled the scene. Then the man was hit by two other vehicles as he was lying on the road. Both also fled the scene.Clairemont Mesa Boulevard near Dubois Street was closed for several hours during the investigation. 563

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police investigated in Little Italy Saturday the suspicious death of a woman who appeared to be homeless.Officers received a 911 call at 3:42 a.m. reporting a body found at West Hawthorn and State streets, just west of Interstate 5.The woman appeared to have traumatic injuries but investigators could not immediately determine the source of them.The victim, who has not been identified, was in her 40's or 50's.Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477. 586
