(AP) — A fatal shooting inside a Costco Wholesale warehouse store Friday night took place after a man attacked an off-duty police officer, the Corona Police Department said.Kenneth French, 32, of Riverside assaulted the Los Angeles Police Department officer while he was holding his young child, the department said in a statement Saturday night. The officer fired his gun, hitting French and two of French's relatives, the department said.French was killed, the department said. They huddled until they were able to escape through a side door."I saw people and heard shots and my first though was 'Jesus, is this another mass shooting?'" she said. "I didn't know if this was a random thing or a domestic thing or if this was a mass shooting. Everything was happening so fast, I just wanted to get me and my kid to safety."In the video, her daughter says, "Mommy, we need to go."The Los Angeles Police Department said in a statement Saturday afternoon that it has launched its own investigation of the incident.Christina Colis told the Riverside Press-Enterprise that she was in the produce area when she heard six to seven shots and hid with other shoppers in a refrigerated produce room. She said her mother saw people injured on the floor."I thought maybe someone dropped a bottle of wine, but then I kept hearing shots," shopper Will Lungo told the Press-Enterprise newspaper. "An employee came in and helped us out through the emergency exit."Witnesses told KCAL-TV that shoppers and employees rushed to the exits. COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Scientists say an enormous chunk of Greenland’s ice cap, estimated to be about 110 square kilometers (42.3 square miles), has broken off in the far northeastern Arctic. For comparison, Manhattan is roughly 22 square miles. They see it as evidence of rapid climate change, which is leading to the disintegration of the Arctic's largest remaining ice shelf. The section broke off a 50-mile long fjord at the front end of the Northeast Greenland Ice Stream, where it flows off the land and into the ocean. Cloie Musumecci sent MTN News a brief video of a woman tripping and falling as a bison charged at her and another person in Yellowstone National Park.Cloie said in an email that the incident happened at Nez Perce Creek. She said the woman "is a Montana local so she knew to play dead in that situation."The woman was not injured and escaped "without a scratch," Cloie said. COVINGTON, Kentucky — The Kenton County, Kentucky Sheriff’s Office agreed to a 7,000 settlement with the families of two elementary students handcuffed by school resource officers in 2014, according to the American Civil Liberties Union.The children were handcuffed above the elbow behind their backs for misbehavior which the Children’s Law Center said was related to disabilities. The Children’s Law Center and ACLU filed a lawsuit against the sheriff’s office in 2015 over the incidents.The ACLU claimed the handcuffings were in violation of the students’ rights. The Covington students -- a boy and a girl -- both had attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, histories of trauma and other disabilities, according to the lawsuit.Video of a boy handcuffed and squirming in a chair even got the attention of the U.S. Department of Justice, which also investigated the school district’s disciplinary practices after the lawsuit was filed. Although the independent investigation did not find the district guilty of wrongdoing, the Department of Justice said that the Americans with Disabilities Act applies to school resource officers, and school policies should dissuade the "school-to-prison pipeline" created by criminalizing misbehavior.In 2017, Covington Independent Public Schools agreed to a settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice and a new set of guidelines for disciplining children with disabilities.Later that year, a federal judge found that it was unconstitutional for school resource officers to handcuff the children.According to the ACLU, “both children had repeated nightmares, started bed-wetting, and would not let their mothers out of their sight,” after the handcuffings.WCPO televisions station in Cincinnati reached out to the Kenton County Sheriff’s Office for comment but has not heard back. 1860
