DENVER — Farmers' markets have begun to return after a lengthy COVID-19 shutdown — and at the One Belleview Station Farmers' Market in Denver, a laid-off restaurant worker is doing her part to get fresh produce to those that need it.Alexandra LittleJohn lost her job as a barista due to the pandemic. But she used her restaurant connections to buy produce boxes for co-workers."Once I got laid off, people just started sending me money and said we wanted to donate a box. So I found a way to donate the boxes," she said.Her work evolved into the LittleJohn Produce Box Project. Using restaurant suppliers, she's boxing up fresh vegetables to be sold and donated amid the pandemic."This is a produce box project that was founded out of COVID-19," LittleJohn Produce said. "I never thought I'd be slinging produce at the farmers market in a pandemic."She started selling the boxes online and at farmers' markets, like the one at Belleview Station. She fills the boxes with locally-grown produce from Fresh Guys Produce that would usually be sold to restaurants, but due to the pandemic, it's not."It would just go to waste, and the farmers wouldn't be getting their full price for them," LittleJohn said.LittleJohn wanted to help farmers, the local produce companies, and, of course, the people who needed fresh food."We use some of the profits for operating expenses like buying a banner, getting a tent, or paying for gas, but then we also buy boxes to give back to other people," LittleJohn said.They have sold almost 800 boxes so far, and with the help of sponsors, they've donated over 350 boxes.LittleJohn says she's applying for 501(c)(3) status to get grants and do even more."It makes me feel like I'm contributing in a positive way to just get us through this. DALLAS (AP) — The Federal Aviation Administration said Wednesday it has granted Southwest Airlines approval to begin flights between California and Hawaii, capping the airline's effort to extend its reach 2,400 miles (3,800 kilometers) across the Pacific.The Dallas-based airline's chief operating officer, Mike Van de Ven, said Southwest will announce timing for selling tickets and beginning flights in the coming days.The FAA will increase oversight of Southwest for the first six months, an agency spokesman said, adding that the additional monitoring is standard practice.RELATED: Lower fares to Hawaii offered following Southwest Airlines successful test flightSouthwest plans to launch flights to four of the Hawaiian islands, including Oahu, where Honolulu is located. DESCANSO (KGTV) -- A San Diego County couple is warning others after getting a flat tire from an unusual source. Pamela Jessup was running errands last Thursday morning when she says she started hearing a thumping noise while driving her Toyota RAV4 on SR-79 near Old Highway 80.Jessup says it was then that she pulled over and looked at her back tire. After not seeing anything wrong, she went on her way.The thumping, however, only intensified after she drove onto Interstate 8. When she drove home, Jessup says her husband Davis found a temporary lane marker stuck, nailed in to the tire.While doing their due diligence, the Descanso residents found dozens of temporary nail markers along the side of the road in the same area Jessup ran into issues.A local tire shop was able to fix the damage to the tire, but it cost the pair . Other residents in the area took to social media to complain similar events that happened to them in the same area.On Facebook, at least three others said they also got flat tires after driving through the area.From Tuesday through Friday, neighbors reported a road construction project that included restriping.On 10News at 5, we follow David Jessup as he makes the journey to the Caltrans subcontractor for answers and to give them back their lane markers. 1313

DENVER – The Denver City Council on Monday approved a pilot program to allow for a supervised injection site in city limits by a 12-1 vote, though the Colorado General Assembly will have to pass a measure allowing for such sites before anything can move forward.If approved, Denver would be the first city in the United States to have a safe-use injection site. Philadelphia and New York City have similar proposals in the works.The council passed the measure 12-1 after it passed its first reading last week in an 11-1 vote.The Denver measure allows for a pilot program that will allow for a supervised injection site for two years where intravenous drug users can use under supervision and where trained staff will also be able to administer Narcan, an overdose antidote, and medication that blocks the effects of opioids.The measure was put forth by councilman Albus Brooks, who has pushed the measure due to the high numbers of fatal overdoses in Colorado – one-fifth of which occurred in Denver last year."Many of our neighbors in Denver are struggling with this public health crisis. To do nothing would be a grave injustice. That's simply not who Denver is," Brooks said in a statement Monday evening. "The pilot program created by this ordinance is a sign that our city is committed to saving the lives of our neighbors."No public funds will be used for the site; it would be operated by a nonprofit or government entity that works with addicts. The site will have to be more than 1,000 feet from schools and daycare centers.The injection site would provide access to clean syringes, fentanyl testing strips, overdose antidotes and counselors who can refer people for substance use disorder treatments and medical and mental health services.Council members toured a similar injection site in Vancouver earlier this year as the General Assembly considered a safe injection site bill, which ultimately failed.The General Assembly will have to pass a new bill that allows for local municipalities to start such safe injection sites before Denver’s can move forward. Brooks has said he had higher hopes for such a measure with Democrats now in control of the state Senate."Our current policies around drug use aren’t working and overdose deaths are rising rapidly," said Lisa Raville, the executive director of the Harm Reduction Action Center. "A Denver supervised use site would significantly impact rates of public injection and help connect drug users with treatment. This is just one step we can take to start battling this problem, and I'm very grateful to Councilman Brooks and the Denver City Council for taking action tonight."In response to the measure’s passage Monday, Mayor Michael Hancock said he was “proud” of the council’s vote.“We need to start looking at more innovative ways to approach the #opioidcrisis,” he said in a tweet.Councilman Kevin Flynn made the lone vote against the measure. In a statement, he said he believed that the site would enhance drug use."I voted no after much struggle with the points for and against it, but was ultimately convinced that a supervised injection site enables continued drug usage more than it reduces or mitigates it," Flynn said in a statement. "I advocate for what I think has been show to be a more effective policy, which is to widely distribute naloxone, the antidote for opioid overdoses, throughout the community and to find people with addictions where they are dying, and not invite them in to safely inject in front of us." 3516

DELAFIELD, Wis. — A suspect accused of shooting two police officers in Delafield early Friday has been taken into custody, police say.Police said they had not conclusively concluded the identity of the suspect, but he appeared to match the description of Nathanael Benton, 23.Earlier Friday, police said a suspect, identified as Benton, was still at large and considered armed and dangerous. Police say he is also wanted for an incident in North Dakota.Two officers were shot just after 1:30 a.m. Friday in Delafield, police said.Residents in Delafield were being asked to avoid the area of Highway 83 and Golf Road.Delafield police said two officers, one from Delafield police and the other from Hartland police, were responding to a call for service regarding a hit-and-run crash at the Holiday Inn Express and shots were exchanged between the suspect and the officers. The officers were injured.The injured officers were taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.Fargo Police Department have been searching for Benton since Nov. 1 in relation to another incident.
