KANSAS CITY, Kansas — An indictment unsealed Friday by a Wyandotte Grand Jury outlines the lead-up to the 2016 death of 10-year-old Caleb Schwab.Earlier Friday, the Grand Jury indicted the Schlitterbahn corporation and the director of the park at the time of the incident, Tyler Miles, on several criminal counts, including involuntary manslaughter. The indictment itself cites whistleblowers inside Schlitterbahn who told grand jurors the company had covered up similar incidents in the past.Further, the Grand Jury indictment says amusement ride design and safety experts inspected the ride and found evidence other rafts had previously gone airborne off the slide. Additionally, the experts said the ride’s design “violated nearly all aspects of the longstanding industry safety standards…” “In fact, the design and operation of the Verruckt complied with few, if any, of the industry safety standards.”It was these bits of information that prompted investigators to launch an investigation. The Grand Jury indictment concludes Caleb Schwab’s death “and the rapidly growing list of injuries were forseeable and expected outcomes.”Finally, grand jurors write that those responsible for the ride’s operation knew they were guilty of criminal misconduct because they attempted to conceal evidence from law enforcement.“These obstructions substantially delayed the investigation.”In response to the details of the indictment, a company spokeswoman said the company plans to contest the allegations: 1513

JAMUL, Calif. (KGTV) - A Jamul man is cleaning up and unsure about how to start over, two weeks after the Valley Fire destroyed his home."Numb is a good word. I've cried, too," said Chuck Stevens, 62.The numbness started on Sept. 5. As the Valley fire approached his home on Northwood Drive early in the evening, Stevens, who was driving home from a baby shower, was turned away by authorities, miles from his home."I saw major flames a quarter-mile from my house ... felt helpless, just helpless," said Stevens. He returned two days later and saw the devastation. His double-wide trailer, his home for the last 15 years, was gone, and so was his truck, car, and two motorhomes."Devastation, everything burned to the ground,' said Stevens. His vehicles were only insured for liability. He didn't have wildfire insurance for his home."They would not give it to me because of the age of the mobile home," said Stevens.Stevens says his most painful loss is the hundreds of photos of his late love, his girlfriend Marilyn Norman, who died of a heart attack two years ago. They were together for more than a decade."Just devastated. I can never look at these photos again ... After years go by, you lose some memories if you don't look at the photos. That's what I really miss," said Stevens.Sadly, family members say they have yet to find any photos of the couple anywhere. Stevens says he'll hold fast to the memories, as he figures out how to move forward."I'm no spring chicken, but I'm starring over," said Stevens.Stevens says a friend has purchased a travel trailer, and he'll be living in it on the property for the time being.A GoFundMe campaign has been set to help Stevens purchase a new trailer home.ABC 10News San Diego is partnering up with sister ABC stations across California to help those families in need. JULIAN, Calif. (KGTV) - Has anyone seen Engine 57? That's the question the San Diego County Fire Department is asking after the official legal takeover of the formerly volunteer-run Julian-Cuyamaca Fire District. The county and the small town department are stuck in a legal battle since the volunteer department's dissolution in April 2019. Previously, members of LAFCO (Local Agency Formation Commission), a group that overseas special county districts, voted to dissolve the volunteer-run fire department. In March 2019, citizens voted the fire agency in charge should be San Diego County Fire Department. In April 2019, the official handover was supposed to happen. RELATED: Julian volunteer firefighters to ask to block dissolution of fire district"It's been very clear to us that the people in the community want the county [Fire Department] to be their service provider," San Diego County Fire Chief Tony Mecham said. Not everybody agrees, as some residents said the change in hands was decided in a secret meeting -- an illegal move according to the Brown Act. "These are people they trust. People that are their neighbors, their friends," Julian resident Vicki Newman said. Newman said she has been an advocate for the small town department since volunteers saved her brother-in-law's life. She said she does not understand why both departments can't coexist."We need all the boots on the ground. We don't need just Cal Fire. It's not just J.C or Julian against Cal Fire," Newman said. RELATED: New lawsuit filed over Julian fire department, attorney alleges "secret meetings"Volunteers cannot respond to calls anymore because legally, the station is now owned by the county. In April, a judge allowed county crews to begin daily equipment inspections. But for the last two months, they say the department's 0,000 Engine 57 has been missing. "Ultimately, about a week ago, we reached the decision that they were probably not going to return the engine, and we filed a missing vehicle report with the sheriff's Ddepartment," Mecham said. The county says whoever is harboring the fire engine is not giving up. So who has it?"There's nothing I can say about that," Newman said. She did not know where the fire truck was being held, adding, "I think if you have questions about that, you should talk to Mr. Briggs."10News called attorney Cory Briggs, who represents the volunteer department, but calls were never returned. Mecham said if the truck were returned tomorrow, they do not wish to press charges. They just want this new era of the County Fire Department to begin before fire season. "There is equipment there that the county would certainly like to refurbish and put right back into the community," Mecham said. "And we've been prohibited from doing that."Both parties say they hope to resolve the issue quickly through the courts and will accept the legal outcome. 2893

Kroger is making another big push into online groceries, this time by opening a digital business in China.America's largest grocery chain said Tuesday that it will start selling its Simple Truth-brand products on Alibaba's Tmall Global site.By partnering with Alibaba, Kroger can battle its biggest rivals on two fronts: It will expand its fledgling online business and will venture abroad for the first time. Tmall is internet giant Alibaba's e-commerce platform for foreign brands."E-commerce enables Kroger to quickly scale to reach new customers and markets where we don't operate physical stores, starting with China," Yael Cosset, Kroger's chief digital officer, said in a statement.Simple Truth is Kroger's line of natural and organic goods. The brand reached billion in sales earlier this year, the company said. It's the latest attempt by Kroger to compete with Amazon and Walmart as online shopping for groceries becomes increasingly popular. The company launched "Kroger Ship," a direct home delivery service, in four US cities earlier this month. And in May, Kroger signed an exclusive deal with UK online supermarket Ocado to use its technology in the United States.Partnering with Alibaba also gives Kroger a gateway into China's huge consumer market.More and more Western companies have been using this playbook. Starbucks recently announced that it is joining forces with Alibaba to launch coffee delivery services in September.Kroger's competitors also want to increase their presence in the region.Walmart and Alibaba competitor JD.com have reportedly decided to invest 0 million in Dada-JD Daojia, a Chinese online grocery delivery company. Walmart first took a position in JD.com in 2016.That partnership could get some new muscle from Silicon Valley. Google bought a 0 million stake in JD.com in June. The two tech firms plan to join forces to sell goods online across Southeast Asia, the United States and Europe. Google still can't offer its main services in China. 2067

Kanye West visited President Donald Trump and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, at the White House today, and he spoke to media for 10 minutes without stopping.West touched on many topics, saying he won't run for President of the United States until at least 2024 and he will support Trump in the campaign for 2020.He also talked about manufacturing and prison reform while he was in the Oval Office.MORE: A history of Kanye West's outspoken support of President Trump"We can empower the pharmaceuticals and make more money," he said.West also talked about being mistakenly bipolar.NFL legend Jim Brown was with West. He's a former star running back for the Cleveland Browns who has previously discussed issues facing the African-American community with Trump.Violence in Chicago is personal to West, who was raised in the Windy City, named his youngest child "Chicago," and recently told a crowd that he is moving back, according to a video obtained by TMZ.This was West's second meeting with Trump since the 2016 election; he previously visited with the then-President-elect at Trump Tower in December 2016. The two discussed multicultural issues, education and violence in Chicago, West tweeted at the time. Trump told reporters at Trump Tower that the they had been "friends for a long time."His wife, Kim Kardashian West, has been to the White House twice in recent months to discuss criminal justice reform and the clemency process. The reality star and entrepreneur was also instrumental in securing a commutation for Alice Marie Johnson, a woman serving a life sentence over non-violent drug charges.West recently made waves by wearing Trump's signature "Make America Great Again" hat during an appearance on NBC's "Saturday Night Live" and delivering a pro-Trump speech after the show went off the air. He has previously said he would consider a presidential run in the future, and told a crowd in San Jose in 2016 that he didn't vote in the election, but "would have voted for Trump."The tête-à-tête also comes the same week as West's longtime rival, Taylor Swift, entered the political arena for the first time, encouraging her fans to register to vote and endorsing Tennessee Democratic Senate candidate Phil Bredesen and House candidate Jim Cooper, also a Democrat. It appears at least political bad blood between the bestselling artists remains. 2374
