"Elder Orphans" are on the rise due to increased isolation due to COVID-19 and experts say it’s also causing an uptick in elder abuse.“It's worse now than it's ever been,” says Anthony Cirillo, an aging and caregiving expert and president of the "Aging Experience," a company that focuses on elder care and caregiving issues. Elder abuse was a problem before COVID-19 hit. The pandemic only exacerbated it, Cirillo said.“We’re all going through these kinds of things and I think you become more vulnerable and emotional and become more open to listening to people who might be trying to exploit you. So isolation is just a killer right now,” says Cirillo.Debby Bitticks says her father-in-law became a victim of elder abuse.“I was really naive in assuming that this person was going to give quality care turned out to be a crook,” Bitticks said. “Everything that you could possibly read about that could go wrong with elder abuse was happening with my father-in-law.”Well before the coronavirus, elder abuse was happening right before her eyes.“We had to hire a private investigator. Of course we notified social services, had to hire an elder care lawyer, yes, we did save his life and brought him to live with us,” Bitticks said.She turned the experience into a movie called "Saving our Parents."“We just want to let people know inspect what you except,” Bitticks said. “Don’t ever assume that your parents are OK without knowing to look for any signs of change.”The film was made in 2008. Since then, it's been shown all over the world, won awards and has been used as a training tool.“It’s as important today as it was when I made it,” Bitticks said. “It’s endless in terms of information, its timeless. All of us have aging parents, the new generation needs to know this."When asked about the warning signs, and what you should look for to spot a problem, Cirillo said, “Look for the signs. Bruises, welts, lacerations, is mom or dad taking care of themselves, are they clean or unwashed, are they having trouble sleeping, have they lost a bunch of weight, any sign of trauma.”He also says if you hire someone, carefully screen them and do a background check. Monitor your loved one's finances and watch their bank accounts. Make sure you draw up an estate plan. And he says start those conversations now.“Everything is about preparation. nobody wants to talk about aging until there’s a crisis situation and when there’s a crisis everybody reacts but in reality, we should be talking about all of these issues early on,” Cirillo said.Experts also advise, especially during this pandemic, if you can't be there, it's imperative that you have someone check in on your family as it's more important than ever to be involved.  Willie Mays once said that no one could hit a baseball further than Willie McCovey. That is high praise from the former MLB Home Run King. On Wednesday, McCovey died peacefully at his home at the age of 80, the San Francisco Giants announced. McCovey was the 11th player in MLB history to join the 500 Home Run Club, and the second member of the Giants to join the club following Mays. McCovey hit 521 home runs in his 21-year career, which ended in 1980. In 1986, McCovey was inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame after being selected on his first ballot. "Baseball has lost a giant, in every sense of the word, with Willie McCovey's passing this afternoon," Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson said in a statement. "There wasn't a batter more feared by opposing pitchers than Willie Mac, who hit 521 mammoth home runs during a dominating 22-year career that included 19 seasons in a Giants uniform." 945

   IMPERIAL BEACH (CNS) - County officials today re-opened parts of the shoreline near Imperial Beach that had been closed due to sewage-contaminated runoff.  Beaches from the U.S.-Mexico border to the northern boundary of the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife refuge were closed on Feb. 11, after testing showed unsafe water quality.   The unhealthy water quality came after a Feb. 9 partial power failure at a treatment facility in Tijuana that allowed an estimated 560,000 gallons of water to flow through the Tijuana River across the border unhindered, according to the International Boundary and Water Commission. Additional sewage flows occurred on that day, as well as Feb. 15 and Tuesday, the commission said.   Officials sample the water quality in the area weekly, according to the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health, and sewage from the Tijuana River frequently results in beach closures during the winter rainy season. 994

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A distraught mother is on the hunt for clues after a thief stole her car and all the gifts she bought for her three children."We love Christmas," said Brenda Gamino.Gamino's Christmas tree is brimming with holiday spirit, but the scene underneath the tree is a bit bare. The gifts that should be there are gone, along with her 1998 Acura Integra. The car is her only way to get to work and drop of her kids - ages, 8, 10 and 12 - at school. Couldn't believe someone would do that. SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) - San Diego Police shot a man who died Wednesday at a San Ysidro mobile home park. The incident happened at Willow Road and East Calle Primera about 1:45 p.m., police confirmed.According to police, witnesses say the suspect, who was only described as a Hispanic man in his 50s, was walking through mobile home park with an AK-47-style rifle. A witness told police that the man was acting odd and appeared to be hiding from someone. Several people in the area say the man pointed the rifle at them. After police arrived on scene, the man approached the officers’ location and fired a round from the rifle, police say. An officer ordered the man to drop the weapon, but he didn’t cooperate. At that point, a witness said the man raised the weapon in the direction of the officers and gunshots were heard again before the suspect fell to the ground. Officers administered first aid until medics arrived. The suspect, who hasn’t yet been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police confirmed that one officer, a 2-and-a-half year veteran of the department, shot the man. The officer’s name isn’t being released at this time.
