BEIJING, June 14 (Xinhuanet) -- Having a pet at home during the first year of a child may halve the risk of developing allergic to them later in life, a new study suggests. The study was published in the journal Clinical & Experimental Allergy.Researchers from Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit assessed 566 boys and girls who were followed from birth until age 18. They found that boys who had dogs and teens who had cats during their first year of life had 50 percent less risk of developing pet allergies later.Lead researcher Ganesha Wegienka said: "This research provides further evidence that experiences in the first year of life are associated with health status later in life, and that early life pet exposure does not put most children at risk of being sensitised to these animals later in life."The researchers said that exposure to animals at other times in childhood didn't appear to be as significant as the first year. However, Wegienka cautioned that this study doesn't prove a cause-and-effect relationship between having a pet and avoiding allergies, just an association between those two factors."We don't want to say that everyone should go out and get a dog or cat to prevent allergies," she said."More research is needed, though we think this is a worthwhile avenue to pursue."
BEIJING, June 26 (Xinhua) -- A drama honoring an archivist who had devoted himself to the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA)'s archive work was staged Saturday evening in Beijing. The drama, "Sheng Ming Dang An," or "Archives of Life," tells the life story of Liu Yiquan who had worked as a file clerk and later a consultant at the PLA Archives for about 38 years.Liu had collected more than 830,000 pieces of military archives, which was regarded as a special contribution to the army. He died on Jan. 28, 2010, at the age of 59.Li Changchun, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, joined the audience of the drama on Saturday.Li later said the drama was touching and significant in reflecting the model role of CPC members ahead of the 90th founding anniversary of the CPC.Liu Yiquan was also honored by the U.S. military authorities for his role in helping identify some key documents that led to the repatriation of the remains of the United States personnel who disappeared during and after the Korea War (1950-1953).
SYDNEY, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Western Australian Government announced on Friday that 14 new substances linked to the manufacture of the synthetic drug Kronic would be banned from Friday midnight. The State Mental Health Minister Helen Morton told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Radio on Friday morning that two substances found in Kronic Black would be banned from midnight tonight (Friday night), as well as another 12 others found in synthetic cannabis products.People caught in possession of banned synthetic cannabis face hefty fines or possible jail sentences. The government of Western Australia (WA) in June listed a number of synthetic cannabis products, including Kronic, Voodoo and Mango Kush, as illegal substances. But synthetic drug makers have since released a new product, Kronic Black Label, using a different blend of chemicals they say make it still legal to sell.Police suspect the death of a 38-year-old Perth man is linked to his smoking of the synthetic cannabis product Kronic Black Label, which contains two of the 14 substances to be banned. The man, from Hillman in Perth's south, was rushed to Rockingham Hospital on Thursday night after suffering a suspected cardiac arrest, but he later died.Police now are conducting an investigation to identify the cause of the man's death. The Australian Medical Association has warned that synthetic drugs could cause severe paranoia, anxiety and panic attacks.
