ATHENS, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Senior Chinese legislator Chen Zhili on Saturday called for the promotion of gender equality through education.Since the Fourth World Conference on Women, society has become more aware that the empowerment of women and the improvement of their status is critical to economic, political and social development, Chen said during a keynote speech at the UNESCO forum on gender equality in Athens.Chen, vice chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), said China has witnessed great improvement in the status of women in recent years.With the implementation of the Women Protection Law as well as other national policies on gender equality, the rights of Chinese women in the area of education, work and politics are guaranteed, Chen said.Chen also spoke highly of the efforts made by UNESCO to promote sustainable development through gender equality.During her speech, Chen made several proposals to promote gender equality. The proposals included creating a stronger voice for gender equality that should be heard by all people, especially male decision makers, she said. Women should be encouraged, she said, to gain the spirit of self-esteem, self-confidence and self-reliance.Chen also urged countries around the world to strengthen exchanges and cooperation in policy-making regarding gender equality.

HANOI, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- A trade fair was held in Vietnam's capital city of Hanoi on Saturday with participation of companies from Vietnam and China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.At the fair, more than 100 companies from China's Guangxi brought here nearly 200 projects in various sectors including resources development, agriculture products processing, agricultural machinery production, sugar production and high technology.Ma Biao, chairman of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region said at the fair that Guangxi and Vietnam have seen strengthened trade and economic links in recent years.Vietnam has been Guangxi's largest trade partner for eleven years, said Ma. Vietnam is also a major destination for Guangxi's outbound investment.Ma said he is confident that cooperation between Guangxi and Vietnam will be further expanded and enriched in the coming time.A total of 64 cooperation agreements were inked at the fair, with the estimated value of 1.96 billion U.S. dollars.The trade fair is part of the activities held during Ma's six- day visit in Vietnam. Ma is leading a 1,000-member delegation here for trade and culture promotion.

MUSCAT, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- China's top political adviser Jia Qinglin met Sunday with Oman's Sultan Qaboos bin Saeed in Nizwa city, 140 km from the capital Muscat, during an official good-will visit to promote the bilateral relations.Jia, chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, hailed the traditional friendship between the two countries and raised proposals to deepen the cooperation.The Chinese people would never forget Oman's assistance for the reconstruction after an 8.0-magnitude earthquake struck southwest China's Sichuan Province in 2008. BEIJING, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has stressed the development of the service industry as part of the government's efforts to promote economic restructuring and to accelerate the transformation of its economic development pattern.Li made his remarks at a meeting focusing on the development and reform of the service industry sponsored by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) on Thursday.The service industry is not only conducive to expanding job opportunities, but also has a low cost of resources, Li said.He further called on local authorities to be innovative in using their regulatory systems to shore up the development of the service industry.Representatives from Shanghai, and provinces of Liaoning, Jiangsu, Hubei and Sichuan explained their experiences in creating service industries.
