SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Officials with two of Southern California's largest schools districts have announced closures effective Monday, March 16, as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus. The Los Angeles Unified School District and the San Diego Unified School District said Friday that campuses are expected to reopen April 6.RELATED COVERAGE: What's been canceled, postponed in San Diego, nationally due to coronavirusThe closures will keep a combined 750,000 students off campus for three weeks heading into spring break. LAUSD and SDUSD join numerous other school systems taking similar measures as the number of COVID-19 cases continue to rise.Superintendent Austin Beutner of Los Angeles and Superintendent Cindy Marten of San Diego have issued the following joint statement: “California has now entered a critical new phase in the fight to stop the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic,” they said. “There is evidence the virus is already present in the communities we serve, and our efforts now must be aimed at preventing its spread. We believe closing the state’s two largest school districts will make an important contribution to this effort. For that reason, we plan to close, effective Monday, March 16. “Later today, we will be providing students, parents and staff with more information on our plans to continue providing learning opportunities for students during the closure. We have also directed staff at both districts to prepare to continue providing nutrition and other supports through family resource facilities.” The boards of Los Angeles Unified and San Diego Unified School Districts have unanimously approved this action. San Diego Unified plans to reopen schools on April 6th, unless conditions call for an extension. SDUSD's closures will shutter 113 elementary schools, 24 middle schools, 4 atypical schools, 10 alternative schools, 27 high schools and 25 charter schools.Friday's announcement comes after San Diego County officials issued a public health order banning mass gatherings of 250 people or more through the end of March.READ: San Diego County officials ban large gatherings 2144

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — President Trump wants to restart the U.S. economy by April 12, but multiple economists, governors and health officials are expressing skepticism about that date amid efforts to flatten the curve of coronavirus infections.Still, the longer the shutdown lasts, the harder it will be for businesses to get up and running, economists say. Alan Gin, an economist at the University of San Diego, said if this lasts through April, it should be survivable for many businesses. However, anything beyond that could render reopening less likely."Some businesses are not going to be able to hang on, even with the help that is coming from the federal government, so they will end up closing for good," Gin said. San Diego's economy is hurting as thousands of restaurant, retail and hotel workers are laid off amid the coronavirus restrictions. Meanwhile, the people who are working from home have very few places to spend their money. Jessie Medina, who opened the Femx Quarter co-working and event center in Mission Hills in November, said her business is out ,000 and she had to put two new hires on hold. "We were getting traction, growing, and all of a sudden it's like, stop," she said. "I really want our doors to open, I don't know how much longer businesses that have these liabilities every month can stay open if they're not making money."Medina said she is trying to do her part by taking out from locally owned restaurants and buying from local sellers, but with her very limited income, she can only do so much. The Workforce Partnership reported Friday that more than 13,000 San Diego workers have been laid off, furloughed or seen their hours cut. Those layoff notices are temporarily no longer required law, so the actual number could be much higher. 1784

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- More than 100 cars pulled out of a downtown San Diego parking lot Wednesday morning hoping to make their voices heard against Proposition 22.Among the caravan -- made up of some local elected officials and workers from various industries -- were many rideshare drivers like Tonje Ettesvoll.Ettesvoll has been an Uber driver for four years, and she said if Prop. 22 passes next month, she will lose income and benefits that are currently protected under state law. If passed, she will be left to rely on what the rideshare companies said they will provide.“A lot of times we spend driving a passenger maybe to a remote area and we have to get back to where we live or where there’s people, and we don’t get paid for that time. And none of the benefit goes towards that time either,” Ettesvoll said.Prop. 22, which is heavily funded by companies like Uber and Lyft, would consider app-based drivers as independent contractors.Al Porce is a driver who supports the measure. If it passes, he said he’ll be able to control who he works for, for how long, and where.“Times are great right now. I’ve been driving all year. I switched over from transporting people to food and groceries. And then I started transporting people again,” said Porce.Opponents of Prop. 22 believe the measure will play a role in deepening racial inequality, citing that 78 percent of this workforce is made up of people of color.Supporters of the measure don’t agree, arguing this measure will keep all who want to work employed with steady income. The caravan is scheduled to stop Los Angeles, Bakersfield, and Fresno before ending in San Francisco. 1648

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for a driver who reportedly hit two people crossing the street in East Village before running away. According to San Diego Police, the incident happened on the 300 block of 14th Street around 12:20 a.m. Sunday. Police say a 24-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man were crossing 14th street in an unmarked crosswalk when the driver of a Ford Mustang attempted to make a U-turn, lost control and hit the pair. The crash left the woman pinned against the wall with a fractured hip and the man with abrasions, according to police. The driver ran away from the scene on foot and has yet to be located, police say. 658
