ST. LOUIS, Mo. – A critical care physician in St. Louis simulated what it’s like to be a coronavirus patient in his ICU in attempt to urge people to wear face coverings.Dr. Kenneth Remy tweeted a video of the simulation last Saturday and it has since gone viral. It has garnered over 2,000 retweets as of Friday and been picked up by major news outlets.“I hope that the last moments of your life don't look like this,” Remy said in his video. “Because this is what you'll see at the end of your life, if we don't start wearing masks when we're out in public, when we don't practice social distancing.”Please listen as this is dire. I don’t want to be the last person that looks in your frightened eyes. #MaskUp ?@DrKenRemy1? ?@WUSTLmed? pic.twitter.com/qwb4eERlfE— Kenneth E. Remy, MD, MHSc, FCCM (@DrKenRemy1) November 21, 2020 In the clip, Remy told KSDK that he was simulating what it would be like for a patient’s oxygen levels to drop dangerously low and have a breathing tube be put in.“I beg you, please practice the precautions to reduce transmission of COVID disease, so that we can effectively prevent disease for you and your loved ones,” Remy continued in his video. In an interview with CNN, Remy said he hopes the nation can get to a place where everyone realizes that it’s more comfortable to wear a piece of cloth on your face than it is to be intubated in the hospital.“I don't want that, I don't want to see that anymore and have to make those phone calls to the frequency that we're currently doing," he told CNN.Along with being a doctor, Remy is also a city councilman in Wildwood, Missouri, so he’s familiar with how wearing a mask has been politicized. He told KSDK that while he understands the importance of personal liberties, he’s tired of patients becoming infected because people refuse to wear face coverings.Click here for CDC guidelines on how to protect yourself and others from COVID-19. 1928

ST. LOUIS — A St. Louis couple facing felony charges for waving guns at racial injustice protesters who marched near their home allege in a lawsuit that a news photographer trespassed to capture an image of the confrontation. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Mark and Patricia McCloskey, lawyers in their 60s, filed the lawsuit Friday in St. Louis Circuit Court against United Press International photographer Bill Greenblatt and the wire service. At issue was a protest on June 28, when a few hundred marchers veered onto the private street near the McCloskeys’ .15 million home in St. Louis’ posh Central West End area.Mark McCloskey emerged with an AR-15 rifle and his wife displayed a semiautomatic handgun. The incident sparked international intention and was shared widely online.Newspaper photographers are allowed to take images from public streets, sidewalks or alleys. The McCloskeys have argued that protesters were trespassing because they live on a private street. The McCloskeys are also suing Redbubble, an online custom retail website. The couple says Redbubble users have been selling merchandise that includes the UPI photo without their consent. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported last month that the UPI was considering sending a cease-and-desist to the McCloskeys after they used the image on a set of greeting cards. The McCloskeys, known for being litigious, delivered a virtual address at the 2020 Republican National Convention. 1468

Someone is making death threats against a 10-year-old girl at her school in Framingham, Mass. The girl is a fifth grader at Hemenway Elementary and the two notes directed at her have now drawn the attention of Framingham Police. It was Friday morning when the Muslim youngster went to her classroom cubby and found a note calling her a “terrorist.”“She was visibly upset, she was crying,” her uncle Jamaal Siddiqui said. “That’s not what Islam teaches, and that’s not what Muslims are.”Her uncle says the principal visited each classroom urging the culprit to come forward with an apology and sent an email to parents condemning the incident.“Hate is not brought from birth, it is embedded into a human being either by parents or their surroundings,” Siddiqui said.On Tuesday morning, there was a second note, this time saying “I will kill you.”“Just the thought of that makes me feel sick to my stomach,” Siddiqui said. The principal quickly brought the superintendent and police onboard, but despite their safety concerns, the little girl’s family has not pulled her out of class.“If we take her out of school it’s just going to show that we can’t stand up to the situation,” Siddiqui said. The principal says many classmates have rallied around the student and some disgusted parents did the same.“It’s absolutely devastating and I don’t want this to happen in my child’s school at all,” one parent said.“It’s nuts basically,” another parent said. “Hard to believe this thing could happen.”So far, school officials and police have not been able to ID the handwriting or trace the notebook paper. Her family has urged the young victim to smile through it and not become bitter, but know that’s a tall order for a 10-year-old.“It’s sad, it’s sad that kids at such a young age have to deal with this,” Siddiqui said. The girl’s parents will meet with school officials and police Wednesday to discuss a safety plan going forward. The FBI announced Tuesday that hate crimes in this country are up 17 percent this year. 2017

SPRINGFIELD, Va. — Virginia's largest school system is removing the name of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from one of its high schools in favor of the late U.S. Rep. John Lewis. The board voted Thursday to rename Robert E. Lee High School in Springfield, Virginia — a Washington, D.C. suburb — after the late congressman and civil rights leader.A news release posted on the school district's website says the new name will be effective for the 2020-21 school year."Rep. Lewis was a champion of the Civil Rights movement, and our Board strongly believes this is an appropriate tribute to an individual who is a true American hero," School Board Chair Ricardy Anderson said in a statement. "We will also honor his life's work by continuing to promote equity, justice, tolerance and service in the work that we do.""The name Robert E. Lee is forever connected to the Confederacy, and Confederate values are ones that do not align with our community," said Tamara Derenak Kaufax, a board member representing the high school's district. "Our schools must be places where all students, staff, and members of the community feel safe and supported. I believe that John Lewis' extraordinary life and advocacy for racial justice will serve as an inspiration to our students and community for generations to come."Other names under consideration included Barack Obama, Cesar Chavez, Mildred Loving, Central Springfield and Legacy. The change comes nearly three years after the school system removed the name of Confederate Gen. J.E.B. Stuart from another high school.Several high schools across the country named for Confederate generals have chosen to select new names following monthslong protests against police brutality and systemic racism.Lewis, a civil rights icon, died last week. 1784
