TIJUANA, Mexico (KGTV) - The first group of people from the migrant caravan have arrived in Tijuana, according to a Mexican journalist. According to journalist Jorge Nieto, the group has 85 people. This group is reportedly people of the LGBTQ+ community and they left the others behind because they felt they were being discriminated against. They arrived at the Tijuana bus station, then took buses to an Airbnb in Playas de Tijuana, paid for by U.S. lawyers with the caravan.RELATED: Bulk of migrant caravan is 1,600 miles away from TijuanaOnce at the house, neighbors clashed with the migrants, "Yelling at them go away go to a shelter, this is not your place, all you came here this is a safe area and we are afraid of you," Nieto said shelters aren't an option as they are already over capacity from the last caravan.Nieto said the migrants defended themselves, saying the neighbors could hurt them as well, "we're not going to make noise, we're not going to make any mess."One migrant spoke with reporters saying they had the right to seek refuge in another country and pursue a better life with respect. It's not clear when they plan to turn themselves into U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and seek asylum in the United States. The group will reportedly spend a few days in Tijuana to rest. Tinder is soaring thanks to its new premium membership plan: Tinder Gold.Match Group, which owns 45 dating platforms including Tinder, OkCupid and Match.com, reported on Tuesday that Tinder Gold subscriptions boosted sales 19% from a year ago.Tinder added a record 476,000 paying members last quarter. Now 2.5 million customers pay for Tinder.Match CEO Greg Blatt called Tinder's quarter "fantastic" in a prepared statement.Investors swiped right on the report: Shares of Match Group spiked 11% on Wednesday. The stock is up 75% this year.Tinder already had Tinder Plus, which costs .99 a month and allowed customers to increase the number of people who viewed their profiles, use unlimited likes and undo swipes. In August, Tinder debuted Tinder Gold, a .99 monthly subscription that lets customers see who they've matched with as soon as they open the app. Tinder Gold saves time on the app because people don't have to swipe through other profiles to find matches."Tinder Gold plays on people's impatience," says BTIG analyst Brandon Ross.Ross says Match Group has mastered how to make money off loyal Tinder users."They're proving that if you have a deeply engaged base you will eventually get them to spend money," he explained.Still, Match Group faces competition from other dating apps like Bumble, Tastebuds, Hinge and Coffee Meets Bagel and will need to show investors that it's adding new paid subscribers. But analysts are convinced Tinder has room to grow and convert more customers to its paid offerings."There's a lot of momentum that remains behind the broader Tinder story," says Piper Jaffray analyst Sam Kemp. 1646
TOKYO (AP) — The five Olympic rings are back in Tokyo Bay. The rings were removed for maintenance four months ago shortly after the Tokyo Olympics were postponed until next year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The rings are positioned on a barge and stand about 15 meters tall and 33 meters in length — about 50 feet tall and 100 feet in length. The Olympic rings will be lighted at night and are situated in the shadow of Tokyo's famous Rainbow Bridge. The Olympics are to open on July 23, 2021, followed by the Paralympics on Aug. 24. Organizers are confident that 15,400 Olympic and Paralympic athletes can safely enter Japan during the pandemic. 659
There are 725 days until the 2020 presidential election. “I know people think it's a long way out, but the reality is the Iowa caucuses are likely to be 15 months from now, if not sooner,” says Dr. Lara Brown, the director of the Graduate School of Political Management at George Washington University.Iowa is key. Several high-profile Democrats have already visited the state recently, and experts say it won't be long until some of them officially throw their hat in the ring.“I would imagine we're going to have some candidates announcing their runs either at the end of this year, so the end of December, or in the first two months of 2019,” says Brown.Brown published a book on presidential nominations and elections called “Jockeying for the American Presidency: The Political Opportunism of Aspirants.”Brown says Democrats can expect a crowded field, just like the Republicans had in 2016.While no one has officially announced a party candidate, a list of potential candidates has been building for months.“We're going to have a lot of different Democrats from a lot of different regions, trying to make the argument they're really the one to lead the party and bring the White House back to the Democrats.”While it's rare that an incumbent president loses a re-election campaign, Brown says President Trump is vulnerable.“It’s evident after the 2018 elections that the Republican party's base is shrinking,” she says. “They are not appealing to as many people as they used to. There's now a 20-point split among women in terms of who and what party they favor.” 1583
