XIANGNING, Shanxi, April 5 (Xinhua) –- Nine miners trapped under the flooded Wangjialing coal mine in north China's Shanxi Province were taken out of the shaft Monday morning miraculously to safety, after 179 hours underground.The survivors were immediately sent to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Their blood pressure and heart rates remained normal after having being trapped in the shaft for one week.One of the survivors, named Li Guoyu, 38, had a lucid mind and told doctors that he comes from central China's Henan Province. HANGZHOU, March 28 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Water Resources (MWR) said Sunday the country will step up water conservation infrastructure construction to better cope with natural disasters.The central government has allocated over 80 billion yuan (11.7 billion U.S. dollars) this year for water conservation projects. Total investment in the sector is expected to hit 200 billion yuan, MWR vice minister Jiao Yong said at a work conference Sunday in Hangzhou, capital city of the eastern Zhejiang Province.Jiao said water conservation facilities in China would be expanded while insuring the quality of the projects.Meanwhile, repair and maintenance work on reservoirs in poor condition will be boosted this year, said Sun Jichang, a senior MRW official.China needed to reinforce a total of 6,240 faulty reservoirs in the three years to 2010. So far, only 2,000 of them have been reinforced as insufficient local funding or possible misuse of funds has delayed the work, Sun said.Local water authorities will be rushed as the Ministry is requiring all reservoir repair work be finished by the end of the year.

BEIJING, May 19 (Xinhua) -- Major indices of China's large ports mostly pointed to better performance in April with increasing cargo throughput and exports volume, the Ministry of Transport said Wednesday.According to latest figures posted on the ministry's website, China's large sea ports and river ports saw rapid throughput growth in cargo, exported goods volume and containers from January to April.Passenger throughput via large ports, however, fell 18.5 percent from a year earlier to 295 million in the first four months of 2010, the ministry said.Large ports are classified in China as sea ports with an annual cargo throughput above 15 million tonnes and river ports with an annual cargo throughput above 10 million tonnes.From January to April, cargo throughput in those large ports jumped 20.2 percent year on year to about 2.48 billion tonnes, the ministry said.About 206.5 million tonnes of goods were exported via the large ports during the January-April period, up 27.2 percent from a year ago.Container throughput rose 22.4 percent year on year to 436.81 million TEUs in the first four months, according to the ministry.
