SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Some San Diego salon owners say the regulations released by the state may not be enough to help save their businesses.Like other business owners around San Diego and across California, salon owner Season McKesson has been trying to navigate through the many changes brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.Through the pandemic, she and other business owners have had to deal with closures, implementing safety precautions, and obtaining personal protective equipment.RELATED: New guidance issued for hair/nail salons, barbershops to move outdoorsOn Monday, the state announced updated guidelines for hair salons and barbershops to operate outdoors.McKesson was prepared to reopen her salon to operate outside until she read the regulations thoroughly. According to the state’s guidelines, salons can reopen but they cannot offer any chemical-related treatments and cannot shampoo customers.“At first, I was trying to be optimistic; you know, giving our industry a way out to come back … but after they dropped the bomb that it’s only haircuts. Reality sets in, and there’s absolutely no way people are going to make ends meet,” she said.McKesson told ABC 10News the guidelines cuts what she believes are essential to the salon experience.She added, “You go to a salon for a certain experience and you’re going to sit and get sprayed down in 100-degree weather. There’s no way.”McKesson is also concerned about the space to operate outdoors, saying not many salons have patios and would have to move into parking spaces. She is similarly worried about the cleanliness of working outside.“It’s not sanitary. It’s not a controlled environment; sitting behind a chair is a controlled environment. I know it’s being cleaned and I know what’s being touched,” McKesson said.Several other salon owners around San Diego County told ABC 10News they are leaning towards not reopening because of the rules, which puts them in an already tough financial situation as they try to keep their businesses alive. 2021

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Sharp Healthcare Tuesday announced the temporary closure of multiple locations amid the coronavirus pandemic. Sharp said Tuesday that it was temporarily closing its La Mesa West and Point Loma locations beginning Thursday, March 26. "Essential care for patients at these sites, and indeed all Sharp Rees-Stealy patients, will continue through video and phone visits or for patients who must be seen in person, at other Sharp Rees-Stealy clinics," the spokesperson said. The sites will re-open once the outbreak is over. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University canceled spring break 2021 on Tuesday night, citing concerns of rising COVID-19 cases. Instead of the traditional nine day break, students will get four "rest and recovery days" scattered throughout the semester. The days will create multiple long weekends for students and faculty. The decision was made during a University Senate meeting. The vote was 44 to 28. The school senate is made up of faculty, staff and student representatives. Within hours of the decision, an online petition gained thousands of signatures from students asking for the school to bring back spring break. In a lengthy email sent to the entire campus, school officials explained the decision was made in an attempt to slow the spread of COVID-19,citing health and safety as the schools top priority. Officials say the rest and recovery days are for no instruction, assignments, deadlines or exams. Now some companies are helping their workers tackle the mounting debt, offering student loan assistance as a benefit.Fidelity Investments is one company leading the way with its Step Ahead Student Loan Assistance program. “We look at our jobs day-to-day and we try and figure out how we can help people make the right financial decisions in their lives and it was something holding back some of our folks here at Fidelity," said Jared Roethlisberger, a Fidelity Branch Manager in Mission Valley. "They couldn’t save for retirement or they were working on saving for that home, and this allows us, Fidelity, to help those associates be able to take a little bit more home in their pocket."Employees who’ve been with the company for at least six months are eligible for ,000 a year toward their student loans up to ,000.RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Bill would help employers aid employees in paying off student loansFidelity started offering the benefit in 2016 and more than 9,300 employees have saved over million in principal and interest. Some companies are also getting creative, like providing an option to transfer carry-over paid time off (PTO) into a payment against student debt.Despite Fidelity's success, few businesses overall are offering this benefit. A 2018 survey by the Society for Human Resource Management found only 4 percent of organizations offered financial aid to help employees repay student loans, the same as in 2017. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Students and staff at Morse High School may have been exposed to tuberculosis, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency. According to the agency, the periods of exposure were from June 17 to July 26 during summer school, then again from August 26 to September 10. Health officials and the San Diego Unified School District are working to notify those who may have been exposed. Testing will be provided on September 24 from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Morse High School for students identified as potentially exposed. The district is providing testing to staff who may have been exposed. Tuberculosis is transmitted from person to person through indoor air during prolonged contact with someone who is infected. “It is important that we identify those who have had prolonged close contact in an enclosed space with the TB case and test them since the initial infection usually has no symptoms,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “Early diagnosis and prompt treatment can prevent the infectious form of the disease.”Symptoms of TB include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss.
