SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The escalation in Iran is stirring up terrifying memories for the family of a San Diego man, held there for more than a year during one of the most intense hostage standoffs in history."I was trying to get information. All I had heard from the State Department was that the embassy had been overrun," said Dotty Morefield, whose husband, Richard, was one of 52 people taken hostage in Iran in November 1979. "I picked up the phone and thought if anyone was going to know it would be the news agency, and Brad picked up."It's been more than 40 years since Morefield picked up the phone and called 10News for the first time. 10News assignment editor Brad McLellan picked up the phone."Mrs. Morefield told me her husband had just been taken hostage in Iran and I was shocked. I didn't know what to say," McLellan recalls. For more than 400 days after that, it became her mission to keep her husband's name relevant."It's a kind of fear where you can't function, you're just sitting by the phone waiting," Morefield said. "I have to face the fears. The uncertainties and the worries. It kept me very busy and it kept me informed."Day in and day out, Morefield made sure the hostages were kept in the spotlight. Finally after 444 days, the hostages were released."I was just I was beyond excited," Morefield said. And here, Morefield and her kids — and a sea of supporters — celebrated her husband's return."He was stunned," Morefield said. "There were people from Lindbergh Field to the townhouse I was renting in Tierrasanta. Never," Morefield said. "He would wake up afraid, startled. He hated to have a door shut."Morefield now lives in North Carolina. Her lawyer says each hostage was promised .4 million, or 0,000 for a spouse or child, but to this day they're still waiting. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The Friar Faithful won’t be able to attend games in Texas to cheer on their San Diego Padres, but fans can support the squad in this week’s National League Division Series games at Petco Park while in their cars.The Padres’ drive-in watch events will take place at Petco Park’s Tailgate Lot at 1301 K Street.The first game of the best-of-five series against the NL West rival Los Angeles Dodgers is set for Tuesday, Oct. 6. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., and the series will be played at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.Games will be shown on three separate large LED video screens, and fans who attend are encouraged to decorate their vehicles and don brown and gold in support of the team.Part of the drive-in experience includes dining options for four, a reusable bag with four rally towels, a car flag, and four hats.The team is reminding those who attend that health and safety measures will be in place, such as guests remaining in their vehicles unless they are visiting a retailer onsite or using a restroom.Face masks are required for all fans; the team says all staff members at the event will be wearing masks and conducting routine cleaning.There will be 20 feet of space between vehicles to promote more social distancing.Jaclyn Lash, the Padres’ Vice President of Special Events, said, “We’re still in a pandemic, we did everything we did that people stayed in their car or wore a mask. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The city of San Diego is making sure its homeless students have the right tools to succeed in school.One San Diego’s “We’ll have your back campaign” is distributing thousands of supplies to the San Diego School District’s less fortunate students.Officials estimate more than 6,000 students are homeless in the district.“A lot of these kids don’t get anything new and that’s why we make it is possible,” said Katherine Stuart-Faulconer, the wife of San Diego Mayor Kevin Falconer.One San Diego will have several more similar events and drives this year. 579

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The manager of a Cricket Wireless store in Pacific Beach is hoping the public can help identify two men involved in tagging the back of the store. Blake Beadle, the store manager, said newly installed cameras captured two men approach the store on Garnett Avenue on Monday night at around 9:30 p.m.One of the men approached the back of the store and appeared to spray paint something on the back wall. Meanwhile, the other man stood watch.Beadle said he had just painted over the spot a week and a half ago, when vandals had hit the same spot. “It seems like as soon as we paint over it, within a few weeks it gets tagged again in a similar fashion,” said Beadle. He reported the latest incident to police. He said he hopes the video can help identify the suspects. 792

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Target cash registers suffered a nationwide outage Saturday, leaving some customers around the country sitting in line for hours.The company's corporate office said an "internal technology issue" shut down registers for about two hours Saturday, preventing customers from making purchases in store.Target added that the technology issue was not a data breach or security-related issue and that customer data was no compromised. By 2:30 p.m., Target said their systems were back online:"Target’s registers are fully back online and guests are able to purchase their merchandise again in all stores. The temporary outage earlier today was the result of an internal technology issue that lasted for approximately two hours. Our technology team worked quickly to identify and fix the issue, and we apologize for the inconvenience and frustration this caused for our guests. After an initial but thorough review, we can confirm that this was not a data breach or security-related issue, and no guest information was compromised at any time.
