SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — If you've noticed the sharp increase in gas prices around San Diego lately, chances are we're not done.The average price for a gallon of gas Saturday was .77 in San Diego, according to AAA, jumping another four cents since Friday and reaching the highest San Diego has seen in about five months.At this time last month, San Diegans were paying on average 46 cents less per gallon. A year ago, 23 cents less. The closest San Diego's average has come in recent months to was .84 on average in Oct. 2018, according to Gas Buddy.GAS MAP: Search for the cheapest gallon in San Diego with our Gas Map"Four dollars a gallon on average is certainly within the realm of possibility given today's average is .73 and wholesale prices went up some 18 cents," Patrick HeHaan, with GasBuddy, told 10News. "That, in addition to the increases that are already coming down the pipeline, will likely thrust San Diego to that a gallon mark. That's something we have not seen in four, call it five years."AAA says a series of refinery issues have reduced gas supplies. According to Bloomberg, Valero Energy Corp's refinery in the Bay Area, Phillips 66 refinery in Los Angeles, and Chevron Corp.'s El Segundo plants have all seen shut downs and halts in oil production this month due to various problems.Nationally, gas has been averaging .73 a gallon. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In celebration of Dr. Seuss's birthday, and as part of "America Reads," the United Way of San Diego is holding a week-long book drive across San Diego County."Reading to children is the utmost important thing a parent can do," says United Way CEO Nancy Sasaki.The United Way will accept book donations at their office, and also at any SDCCU branch location across the county. They're also teaming up with Warwick's Book Store in La Jolla for donations.The need is most significant among low-income families. The United Way says 61% of low-income families in San Diego don't have any books in their homes for kids. That puts them at a significant disadvantage."If a kid is not at a 3rd-grade reading level by the end of third grade, we know they're four times more likely not to graduate high school on time," says Sasaki. "And if they come from low-income communities, they're six times more likely to fall behind."Studies show that reading to children as few as three times each week helps promote vocabulary and reading proficiency."In many family settings where the parents are working 2 or 3 jobs, and they're crossing paths in the night, and they're barely able to get the food on the table, reading is not so easy to do," Sasaki says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Low inventory and historically low interest rates are driving California's red-hot real estate market.According to the California Association of Realtors, home sales climbed to their highest level in more than a decade, and the median home price set another high for the fourth straight month.It's making it harder for buyers to buy low but easier for sellers looking to sell high."With everything shutting down, I just figured now was the time to do it," said Kristi Gonzalez.After a career in the San Diego area, Gonzalez is retiring, moving out of state, and about to cash out."I think now is a great time to sell," she said. "There's very low inventory. It will make it easier for me."If you've paid attention to California's real estate landscape, the market is hot in many cities."We're seeing about a 10 percent increase in the last four to five months, and that's insane considering where we were," said Jordan Beal, president of the Beal Group.Beal said the San Diego area sees an influx of buyers from New York, the Bay Area, and Los Angeles."When you look at the fact that money is as cheap as it is, people who have been able to keep their jobs combined with a lot of tech people who can now work remotely and see San Diego as really cheap market compared to the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and New York, I don't see our market slowing down anytime soon," Beal said.The same thing is happening as you head north into the Central Valley."Inventory is historically low, interest rates are historically low, and it's just kind of the perfect storm with that whole supply and demand," said Ronda Newport, president of the Bakersfield Association of Realtors.Newport said the Bakersfield market is on fire.It's a combination of locals looking to take advantage of interest rates and those from wealthier ZIP codes trying to get out of a big city."If you have an LA buyer or a Bay Area buyer, and if they sell their home, you know a small little home for what they sell for in that area, and they move to Bakersfield, and they see what they can get for the money here, it's an easy decision," she said."We are just breaking all sorts of records," said Bruce Blair of Blair Properties.Blair's been selling homes along the Central Coast since the 70s.He said some people are buying houses they've never seen. Some buyers are paying in cash, and those who aren't have large down payments."It's tough to make any type of prediction right now, but right now, the housing market is not affordable for a lot of people in San Luis Obispo County, and that's a problem."According to the California Association of Realtors, September's statewide median home price was 2,430. That's up more than 17 percent from September of last year.According to a survey from Zillow, life uncertainty, likely caused by COVID-19, keeps more than a third of would-be sellers out of the market.The Zillow survey found many sellers say they anticipate a higher sale price if they wait.So, what to do? Unfortunately, there's no crystal ball."I don't anticipate it slowing down too much," said Carla Farley, President of the Greater San Diego Association of Realtors. "Unless we get some interest rates that go crazy after the election cycle, maybe that might slow some things, but I don't anticipate that happening either."According to the California Association of Realtors, the median number of days it took to sell a California single-family home was 11 days in September, down from 24 in September 2019. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Just days into California's new stay-at-home order, many businesses say this time around they won’t comply with restrictions.Some restaurant owners tell ABC 10News they’re not doing it out of defiance, but as a way to survive.“We have to stand up for ourselves. We have to open or else we lose the risk of losing our business entirely,” said Annie Rammel, the owner of Oak + Elixir restaurant in Carlsbad.Rammel said she spent ,000 to have a deck built outside of Oak + Elixir on State Street to provide a safe dining option for patrons.It was going well until she had to shut things down once again this week as COVID-19 cases surged and the state put restrictions on in-person dining were put back in place.“Closed, open, closed, open,” she said. “A lot of us are not doing well; we’re not doing well, the take out and to-go we’re losing money on that.”Rammel and a group of small business owners in Carlsbad and Oceanside decided to reopen for in-person dining Friday and take their chances, including several restaurants in the Carlsbad Village.She said if she stayed closed, her 15 employees would be laid off during an already rough year.“It’s for our employees to put food on their tables; some of them have children that they have to provide for, the holidays are coming, and I’m just not going to do that,” she said.Her patio and additional outdoor sidewalk tables were ready for customers on Friday at 4 p.m. Rammel said she expected to seat approximately 100 customers.Just next door at Caldo Pomodoro, customers were seated outside for lunch Friday.“We’re basically fighting for our lives, and we’ve been here for 29 years, it’s a family-owned and operated restaurant, it’s not that we’re doing anything wrong, we just want to survive,” said Justin Davis, who works as a server at the restaurant. “If we shut down, we’re pretty much not going to open again. We did the plexiglass, redid our tables, and invested so much money into it, and we don’t see any reason why we should shut down again.”A Carlsbad Police spokesperson said officers respond to reports of businesses operating outside of the health orders, but the goal is to gain compliance through education.However, they said willful violations witnessed by officers will be reported to the county for documentation.“We’re scared to lose our ABC license, which is our liquor license,” said Rammel. “If that happens, the group of us is saying we’re going to push through, we have some attorneys on our side, and they say we have a really good fight because there is no evidence that these spikes are coming from us.” 2614
