SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Amazon announced Tuesday it will create more than 200 new jobs in San Diego as part of a national expansion of its Tech Hubs.In a news release, company officials said plans are in place to expand offices in San Diego, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, New York, and Phoenix, which would lead to the potential addition of 3,500 new jobs.According to the company, there are more than 70 open tech and corporate roles in the San Diego area.With the addition of new tech and corporate jobs in San Diego, Amazon said it would add more than 40,000 square feet of office space near the UC San Diego campus.Some of the ventures being worked on at Amazon’s San Diego Tech Hub include games via Amazon Game Studios and a project that involves the launch of “Low Earth Orbit” satellites.Igor von Nyssen, Site Lead at the San Diego Tech Hub, said, “Amazon’s continued growth in our San Diego Tech Hub and the creation of these 200 new jobs is a testament to the strong and diverse pool of tech talent in this community. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After serving in the Korean War 67 Years ago, a San Diego veteran is preparing for the trip of a lifetime with Honor Flight San Diego. Chuck Willey says he's looking forward to experiencing the Washington, D.C. memorials with other veterans. "He mentioned about being accepted to the Honor Flight. But said the only problem is I don't have a uniform, and I said oh Chuck, I can help you with that!" said Patricia McKeon Suter, a relative of Willey. She put a call out for help on one of her Facebook groups - Buy Nothing Navajo, San Diego, CA - asking if anyone had a Korean War-era dress. Three days later, a neighbor answered her call."The reason why she really wanted to do it is her grandfather served in the Korean War in the Marines, and she didn't get to honor him, he passed away a while ago, and this was her way of honoring him. It brought tears to my eyes, which it's doing right now," said McKeon Suter.The neighbor found a uniform in Willey's size, pants, and a jacket.Willey's daughter continued the quest on eBay, where someone ultimately donated a hat and tie after learning Willey's story."Overwhelmed, just very, very thankful for all the help," said Mckeon Suter.Willey was also overwhelmed by the generosity of strangers. "I can't believe that people would do that," said Willey.Willey says he is proud of his service and grateful he'll once again be able to wear a uniform for this special occasion. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego Midwife is living her dream of opening her own birth center, helping minority women.We met Nikki Helms in July when her GoFundMe was off the charts, raising more than 1,000.She had been a licensed midwife for about a year and wanted to open a birth center. Fast forward to December and her dream is coming true."We've got signage and I stood at the foot of my stairs and cried about that," Helms said filled with gratitude. The community has continued to wrap their arms around her mission."It's really just been amazing and overwhelming, and I feel so blessed," she said wiping a tear from the corner of her eye. "And so grateful and I get teared up every time I start talking about it because it gives me the opportunity to go care for families and you know it just blows my mind."Since July she's raised another ,000 and packages keep arriving on her doorstep with items for the birth center.Her mission is to support women through childbirth and beyond. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A teenager was injured after jumping from an Uber driver's vehicle on Interstate 8 in Mission Valley late Tuesday.The 13-year-old boy, who's from Yucalan, Mexico, was traveling on westbound Interstate 8 in an Uber ordered by his father at about 9:20 p.m., according to San Diego CHP officials. Due to a language barrier with the Uber driver, the teenager decided to jump from the vehicle on the transition ramp to northbound State route 163, CHP officials said.The teen was taken to Rady Children's Hospital with minor injuries, according to San Diego Police.Based on the statements taken by officers, CHP said they are not pursuing the incident as a criminal matter at this time. 707

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A team led by Scripps Research has yielded positive results in a new research study involving antibodies.Researchers say they've worked to isolate the most potent antibodies in the blood of recovered COVID-19 patients. The study was published in "Science."Dennis Burton, the study's co-author, says once they identified the most potent antibodies, they cloned them."You clone the really good ones, and then you make lots and lots of them in production facilities and then use as a standard to protect and-or treat Covid-19," Burton said.They've tested the cloned antibodies, or monoclonal antibodies, on animals, and they've yielded positive results. They hope to conduct human testing early next year.When asked if it is similar to antibody treatments from convalescent plasma donations, Burton says what they're making is more efficient and can be produced for masses.He says the monoclonal antibodies could be used as a preventive measure given to uninfected but at-risk people before a vaccine is available, and could even be useful for people that may not respond well to a vaccine.He also says the monoclonal antibodies could be used to design better vaccines by giving researchers a better idea of which antibodies are most effective. 1268
