BEIJING, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Remote villages across Yongning County of northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region have been connected to a safe water supply thanks to a newly-completed water project. The project, launched in August 2010 and concluded on Nov. 27, has ensured that 100,000 people in 44 villages of Yongning will have access to safe water for drinking.People in the county had long suffered from a severe shortage of safe water because the area's surface water contained excessive amounts of fluorin and iron. The project was initiated after local authorities increased their efforts to provide safe drinking water after Chinese President Hu Jintao visited the region.During an inspection to a well-drilling site at Yuanlin Village of southern Yongning on March 23, 2010, President Hu stressed that efforts be made to ensure more people have access to safe water supplies.

VIENNA, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese diplomat on Thursday urged relevant parties to step up diplomatic efforts to solve the Iranian nuclear issue."The Iranian nuclear issue is complicated and sensitive, therefore dialogues and negotiation are the only right way to solve the issue, " said Hu Xiaodi, China's permanent representative and ambassador to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna.Hu welcomed the forthcoming meeting between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany scheduled for next week in Geneva. The resumption of the talks would offer a new opportunity to promote the process of a diplomatic solution, Hu told a board meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).Hu noted that, as a party to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), Iran enjoyed the right of peaceful use of nuclear energy and at the same time carried corresponding international obligations."We expect Iran to fully implement relevant resolutions of the Board and the Security Council and strengthen cooperation with the agency, so as to foster the confidence of the international community in the peaceful nature of its nuclear program, " he added.Hu also urged the IAEA to play a constructive role in implementing safeguards in Iran and promoting a proper solution to the Iranian nuclear issue.

BEIJING, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese officials and Communist Party cadres have been warned against financial violations and extravagance in the name of New Year celebrations. The Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the Ministry of Supervision have issued a circular, asking officials and cadres to be self-disciplined and practice frugality during the holiday season.Party officials must not accept gifts in any form, said the circular, which offers a list of prohibited items and services that "could influence the fairness of official duty," such as attending banquets, and expenses-paid travels and entertainment. The holiday season of 2011 starts from New Year's day and continues into the Spring Festival, or the Chinese New Year, which falls on February 3.The Chinese tradition of presenting gifts to family members and friends during the Lunar New Year has been extended to sending gifts to officials, which poses a challenge to the country's anti-corruption efforts. The circular also warned officials to avoid extravagance, and prohibited them from spending sprees using public money for personal gains.Instead, the limited public money and resources should be spent on developing the economy and improving people's livelihoods, it said.Further, the circular told discipline inspection authorities at all levels to seriously crack down on any violations of the law and disciplines.

BEIJING, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- A well-known economist said Monday that the biggest problem in China is not inflation, but shifting its economic structure to maintain sustainable growth."The biggest challenge faced by China is economic restructuring in order to shift the economy to a more balanced way that will provide sustainable economic growth," Stephen Roach, former chairman of Morgan Stanley Asia, told Xinhua."In the post-crisis environment, the shift means to build a consumer-led economy, and that is the overriding challenge in China," said Roach, who currently serves as non-executive chairman of Morgan Stanley Asia.Residents' incomes in China remain at a low level. "People's incomes are only 42 percent of the GDP, whereas in the US the rate is 86 percent. So the government should raise the income of the citizens, especially when China wants to stimulate domestic private consumption," said Roach."Of course, that does not mean the Chinese government should ignore the risk of higher inflation," he said.Official data showed that China's October Consumer Price Index (CPI), a major gauge of inflation, rose to a 25-month high at 4.4 percent."There is a certain amount of momentum to inflation, so it's likely to be the a problem over the next 12 months. If the government acts quickly, it will be able to limit the problem, or else China could be facing this problem in 2012 as well," said Roach.Roach suggested China should take broad and comprehensive approaches in dealing with inflation, and the medium-term goal of the shifted economic structure need to be maintained."The government has to demonstrate its resolve in dealing with inflation, and property market assets. It's a challenge, but I think the government is up to the challenge," according to Roach.
