A Nashville family celebrated a World War II veteran's 99th birthday this Memorial Day weekend with cake and a lot of war stories.Joe B. Davis fought three years with the 1st Infantry Division from November 1942 to November 1945. He was stationed in Algeria, Tunisia, and Sicily."I was in Infantry, you see, they had it pretty rough. Good ole Infantry. I would've been in D-Day if I hadn't gotten wounded in Sicily," he said.On Sunday, Davis spent the afternoon with his family made up of five generations.Every year, his family listens to his war stories and sings happy birthday to him. His birthday is more special as it falls before Memorial Day."We try to celebrate his birthday the best we can every year, just not because he's our grandfather, but also because tomorrow is a very special day being Memorial Day. So we celebrate everybody," granddaughter Christine Gallegos said.Gallegos and her family said Davis' memories about surviving war and his stories he tells them are something they cherish."To be able to still talk to us and still tell memories because a lot of people do not have the mindset like he has at 99 years old. A relatively new term we're hearing to help stop the spread of coronavirus is “support bubble.”It’s essentially described as a safer way to socialize and support each other. You should also agree to how long the bubble will last. Obviously, the less people, the lower the risk.It’s also a good strategy for families that need help with things like childcare or taking care of an aging relative.Even professional sports teams and other businesses are somewhat following this theory, setting up things like safe hotels and doing things like testing anyone that comes in.“Then, you tell them they can’t leave the place and inside have to be careful about interaction, then you could theoretically say that’s a safer place than outside the hotel,” said Shahpar.Support bubbles could also help limit virus spread even if someone inside the group were to get the virus, because you already know who the close contacts are.“As we navigate through uncharted waters, we don’t know what’s going to happen. We don’t know how long it’s going to last. So, if this helps us maintain our sanity throughout this pandemic, I think it’s a good idea,” said Shahpar.Other countries and some U.S. counties using the support bubble model are seeing success in lowering cases. 1861

A rare, deadly form of skin cancer is on the rise in the US, and dermatologists are warning people to take extra care of their skin as we head into the summer months.Merkel Cell Carcinoma is found mostly among older patients, but the American Cancer Society says that there are around 1500 cases reported each year."It's devastating because it's usually not picked up until later stages," says Dr. Melanie Palm. She works at Art of Skin in Solana Beach and has treated one case of MCC. "It's more lethal than melanoma. It often has lymph node involvement. It very quickly metastasizes."Research from the ACS says the disease is often associated with a virus. But it seems to affect older people because they have more, prolonged exposure to the sun.Doctors are calling attention to MCC and other forms of skin cancer all throughout May during Skin Cancer Awareness Month. They say it's much easier to prevent Merkel Cell and other cancers than it is to treat them."We live in San Diego. I don't want people to hide from the sun," says Dr. Palm. "But I think being responsible about it is reasonable."That includes wearing sunscreen, protective clothing and regular visits to a dermatologist."It's something I tell all my friends," says Jen Massara, a skin cancer survivor. "Best case scenario is you're fine, you check that box, you're good to go. Worst case scenario, they find something, and you get it taken care of."Self-inspections are also helpful. Dr. Palm tells her patients to keep the "ABCDE's" in mind when looking at moles."A is asymmetery, if it has an odd shape," she says. "B is Border, is the border irregular on the spot. C is color. Is it dark, pink or have several colors. D is diameter. We don't like anything bigger than a pencil head. And E is evolution, has it grown or changed over time."As for sunscreen, Dr. Palm says you want to make sure zinc oxide or titanium dioxide have the highest percentage of all the active ingredients. A Southwest Airlines flight from Chicago to Newark, New Jersey, made an unplanned landing Wednesday after a window cracked, the Federal Aviation Administration and passengers said.Flight 957 was diverted to Cleveland after a report of an issue with a window aboard the aircraft, FAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Cory said. It landed safely at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, she said.Passenger Linda Holley texted her son Ryan with a picture of the damaged window."Window on plane cracked during flight. Landing in Cleveland to be safe. Everything ok but scary," one of her texts read.In another, she said: "Yes Southwest. Just heard loud noise. Very large crack with piece of window missing at bottom.
