SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When you book a flight, your base price may not represent the final bill due to mounting airline fees. As 10News examines ways to make it in San Diego, we have solutions for saving money on travel. It's not your imagination: fees are part of the way airlines do business."Instead of just one price for everything, it's now an a la carte menu," said AAA spokesman Allan Gundy. The hidden charges don't just apply to your luggage. Gundy says fees can climb for seat selection, reservation changes and cancellation, beverages, and in-flight wifi.RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Getting to paradise on points this summerBefore you book, consider investing in a refundable ticket if you believe changes are possible. Also, many airlines charge higher fees to cancel within 24 hours of a flight, so act quickly if you know your travel plans need to be altered, AARP reports.Remember to download movies or games before you fly or, if you must have wifi, Grundy says to "sign up for a monthly subscription service like gogo, which is what most of the major U.S. airlines use."Food prices are high on planes, but you can buy snacks to take through TSA checkpoints and pick up beverages after security.RELATED: Making It in San Diego: What to know about using Tijuana airport's Cross Border XpressGundy also recommends you don't book the cheapest flight you find online because it may not be that great of a deal."Look at what all the additional fees would amount to and look at the total ticket cost," said Grundy. As for cutting down or skipping those fees altogether, there are a few things you can do. "There are airline branded credit cards that as a perk may offer free luggage," advises Gundy. You can also dodge fees by reaching out to a travel agent to find the best deals. 1798

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two San Diego brothers are renewing their push for a Holocaust memorial along the Embarcadero, but the Port of San Diego does not appear to be on board.Mark and Frank Powell, who are Jewish, want to install the memorial at Tuna Harbor, just steps from the U.S.S. Midway Museum and the popular Unconditional Surrender kissing statue. The monument depicts U.S. Soldiers liberating Nazi concentration camps at the end of World War II, with general Dwight D. Eisenhower looking on. The Powells are bringing the idea back to the Port in light of the recent Poway Chabad shooting and overall increase in anti-Semitic incidents. RELATED: Coronado Bridge to light up this week as part of lighting study"It's to educate students, parents, tourists, the public on genocide, the Holocaust and ways to prevent this from happening," Mark Powell said. In 2017, the Powells had the finances lined up, and support from more than a dozen politicians. They had letters from Democratic Congressman Scott Peters, Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter and San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer. But the Port's Public Art committee rejected the proposal in an 8-0 vote. In a statement Friday, Port Chairman Gary Bonelli said there were a number of issues with the proposal."No one on the Committee questioned the importance of the proposed WWII Military Liberation Monument, but Committee members felt that this particular proposal neither inspired nor caused one to contemplate the subject matter," Bonelli said. Mark Powell said that's precisely why it's the right location. "Not everything is going to be butterflies and roses," he said. "We have to teach our kids that life is hard and life is a struggle."The port added that it's not currently accepting new art proposals for the Embarcadero because of redevelopment. A spokeswoman for the agency says the Powells can re-submit their monument proposal if there are significant changes after their prior feedback. They have until January 2020 to do so. 2298
