Here's what's making headlines in the political world on Saturday, November 24 2018:Trump administration asks SCOTUS to hear transgender ban- In yet another aggressive attempt to bypass federal appeals courts, the Trump administration asked the Supreme Court on Friday to hear a challenge to President Donald Trump's policy that bars most transgender individuals from military service.The policy, first announced by the President in July 2017 via Twitter and later officially released by Secretary of Defense James Mattis, blocks individuals who suffer from a condition known as gender dysphoria from serving with limited exceptions. It also specifies that individuals without the condition can serve but only if they do so according to the sex they were assigned at birth.District courts across the country have so far blocked the policy from going into effect. HILLSBORO, Ohio — A dramatic security recording from inside the Highland County Common Pleas Court shows an inmate fleeing his own sentencing hearing on foot, evading deputies in the process, on Tuesday morning.According to court records, 34-year-old Nickolaus Kyle Garrison had in August pleaded guilty to a charge of aggravated possession of methamphetamine. He appeared in court Tuesday to receive a sentence of six months from Judge Rocky Coss.The Highland County Press reported Garrison ran when deputies attempted to take him back into custody after his sentencing.The video released by the county shows Garrison running from the courtroom and out into a hallway, pursued by deputies and a court bailiff. As he runs downstairs, the bailiff attempts to jump over the banister and grab him; the bailiff falls, sliding down the stairs on his back, and Garrison escapes.By the end of the week, Garrison was back in custody. He was captured at a motel in Clinton County around 4:30 a.m. Friday by officers and deputies from multiple law enforcement agencies. Garrison will now face additional charges. Garrett Rolfe, the now fired Atlanta Police officer who shot Rayshard Brooks twice late Friday night, has turned himself into the Fulton County (Georgia) Jail on Thursday.Bond has not been set for Rolfe as of Thursday afternoon.Rolfe has been indicted on 11 charges, including murder. Investigators said Rolfe fired two shots at Brooks, resulting in the Brooks’ death.Officer Devin Brosnan has been charged with aggravated assault and several violations of his oath of office. Brosnan was placed on administrative leave late Saturday.As of late Thursday afternoon, Brosnan was no longer in custody after he was released on bond.Brooks died on Friday night after Rolfe shot him in the parking lot of a Wendy’s restaurant.The Georgia Bureau of Investigations said that officers responded to a call of a man who fell asleep behind the wheel in a drive thru. The police accused Brooks of failing a field sobriety test, which prompted the officers to attempt to arrest Brooks.Video of the incident showed that Brooks then struggled with officers over a Taser. As Brooks took off with a Taser in hand, Rolfe fatally shot Brooks.Brooks was transported to the hospital, and he died during surgery. 1197

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. -- Health officials say there has been a confirmed case of Naegleria fowleri, a brain-eating amoeba, in Hillsborough County, Florida.The amoeba is commonly found in warm freshwater like lakes, rivers, ponds and canals, according to the Department of Health. Infections can happen when the contaminated water enters the body through the nose. The peak season for Naegleria fowleri is July through September. The amoeba is found is more common in the southern states, DOH said.Infection is very rare in Florida, as there have been only 37 reported cases with exposure in the state since 1962, according to DOH. Infection can also be prevented by avoiding nasal contact with the waters, DOH said.DOH in Hillsborough County gave the following recommendations on how people can prevent infection:Avoid water-related activities in bodies of warm freshwater, hot springs and thermally polluted water such as water around power plants.Avoid water-related activities in warm freshwater during periods of high water temperature and low water levels.Hold the nose shut or use nose clips when taking part in water-related activities in bodies of warm freshwater such as lakes, rivers, or hot springs.Avoid digging in or stirring up the sediment while taking part in water-related activities in shallow, warm freshwater areas.You can also get exposed to the amoeba by using neti pots to rinse your sinuses, DOH Hillsborough said in a press release..According to the Florida Department of Health (DOH), Naegleria fowleri is a microscopic single-celled living amoeba that can cause a rare infection of the brain, called primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), which destroys brain tissue and is usually deadly.This article was written by KJ Hiramoto for WFTS. 1781
