Officers watching a protester’s Instagram Live video heard her announce that they were going to raid Walmart at the Grossmont Center mall; a group jumped over the wall into the center near the Game Stop.”Meanwhile, 1,000 people marched on Murray Drive and about 200 protesters gathered outside a LMPD station at the Civic Center.Authorities began receiving numerous calls of protests “morphing into violence and destruction,” including a 911 caller who reported she “was struck in the face by a protester in a restaurant parking lot.”City officials said an order to disperse was given to those gathering at the La Mesa police station just after 4:45 p.m. However, the city’s timeline noted, “In the next several minutes, a riot begins to take shape, with the U.S. flag in front of the police station set on fire, people throwing rocks at the building and at officers, and vandalism of the station. (KGTV) - On Wednesday, a team of researchers from the UC San Diego Scripps Institution of Oceanography will begin a 9-day exploration of the deepest parts of Southern California's coast.Sailing on the Exploration Vessel Nautilus, they'll use a Remote Operated Vehicle called "Hercules" to dive to the bottom of the ocean."Part of our mission is purely exploration," says Professor Lisa Levin, one of the researchers on the trip. "We're visiting places nobody's been to."The team will search 9 spots off the coast of Los Angeles and San Diego, located on an area of the Continental Slope called the "Borderlands." With various canyons, ridges, and seamounts, the depths range from 1,300 to 6,500 feet."We've selected sites that were dredged sometimes in the 1930s and 40s," says Levin. "Nobody's actually been down and looked with their own eyes, or with the aid of a camera to see what actually lives down there so that that's the exploration mode we're in."The researchers hope to collect samples of marine life and also minerals like phosphorus and manganese. They'll also look for bacteria in the sediment.Once collected, the team will study if any of it has potential for use by humans, either as medicine or other mineral-based purposes.The exploration will also help establish a baseline of what the ecosystem looks like now, so it can be protected in the future."We'll be looking at the microbes that live in sediments," says Levin. "To look at the potential of these microbes to produce chemicals that can cure cancer or provide aid in industrial processes. There's a variety of ways we humans might be able to use this."Part of the mission will also allow other people to take part in the exploration. (KGTV) — La Mesa Police Department released body camera footage on Wednesday showing the events that led up to an arrest video that surfaced last week.About 30 seconds of the video provide by police starts without any sound. LMPD Chief Walt Vasquez said the beginning of the video is muted because of the way the body camera is activated. (See the video above and below.)Raw footage of bodycam footage would be released for four officers involved in the arrest of Amaurie Johnson on May 27, according to La Mesa Mayor Mark Arapostathis.Last week, video surfaced showing an argument between Johnson and an officer escalate at the Grossmont Trolley Station. The officer is seen pushing Johnson into a sitting position onto a bench during the video. Eventually, Johnson is handcuffed and told he is being charged with assaulting an officer.Vasquez added that the officer involved in the video has been an officer for about three years. He added that while Johnson was initially stopped for smoking in a trolley area, he wasn't charged with that when he was arrested.Johnson also denied in a separate press conference after city officials spoke that he was smoking. (Press conference below.)“For that situation to escalate the way it did, and for the cop, you know, to stand firm in his beliefs that I should be detained or taken in with no prior evidence or reasoning, I think that should be seen by the people,” Johnson told Team 10 investigator Adam Racusin.He said he was waiting for his friend at the trolley stop, near a building where that friend lives.
