ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - A North County woman says she was scammed at a gas station by a performance 'worthy of an Oscar.'"We pull in and my husbands about to pump in the gas," said Alice. An ordinary trip to fill up turned eventful last month at the Shell gas station on Santa Fe Drive. "I see a man pull up in a black SUV, brand new and shiny," said Alice. Alice says a man in his 30s got out of the GMC Yukon and approached them."He was in head-to-toe designer clothes," said Alice. In the backseat was a well-dressed woman and a little girl."He says, 'Excuse me, Sir. I'm here vacationing from Dubai with my family and my wallet was stolen,'" said Alice. The man asked for some money for gas and then took out a ring."Here, take my ring. It's worth 0. I have money and plenty of jewelry at home. I just need money for gas and food," said Alice.Alice told the man to keep the ring and then had her husband put in on a pump with their credit card."I believed their story ... I put myself in their shoes. I would be devastated, and I would want someone to help me," said Alice.Days later, she learned from her cousin in Los Angeles those strangers were scammers. "I was the 4th person she knew of personally that this happened to. I was duped," said Alice."Then this past Wednesday, Alice was back at the gas station and filling up, when she saw something familiar," said Alice.It was another new GMC Yukon. Inside was a different family. She saw them talking with a young man, before pulling out a ring. "I ran over put my hand in front of the guy and said, 'You should be ashamed of yourself. This is a scam!" said Alice. She learned the family had a similar story about vacationing from Dubai. The SUV sped off, leaving behind a woman hoping others don't fall victim."It makes me angry. It's the giving season and they take advantage of that. They're actors. They played their part perfectly. They're going to get an Oscars, and I handed them the award," said Alice.Alice believes both vehicles had out-of-state license plates. She says she contacted the sheriff's department but was told this incident would likely be defined as panhandling, which isn't a crime. 2184

Ever since their older brother competed in the Scripps National Spelling Bee years ago, twin brothers Garrett and Pierce Bryner have dreamed of making it to the bee — together.This year, they’ll see that dream become reality. “It’s kind of historical, I guess you’d say,” said Garrett, who made it to the national bee — without his brother — last year.Previously, twins would never have been able to make it to the bee together, as one would have always beaten the other out. It currently has two Democratic commissioners, Jessica Rosenworcel and Geoffrey Starks, one of whom Biden could choose to elevate to chairman or choose someone from outside the agency.Pai and another Republican commissioner, Michael O’Rielly, are leaving the agency. O’Rielly is leaving because the White House pulled his nomination after he said he wasn’t sure the agency had authority on Section 230. Congress is weighing the nomination of another Republican, Nathan Simington.Pai has presided over a contentious FCC. He undid net neutrality rules that barred internet service providers like Comcast and AT&T from favoring some types of online traffic over others in 2017 and championed other deregulatory efforts. Facebook and Instagram were both having issues as users reported problems with the social media sites early Tuesday morning. According to downdetector.com,  the East coast is reporting the most problems with Facebook in the United States, but issues are being reported globally as well. This is the second time this month users from all over have reported Facebook being down.Instagram users were also reporting problems, according to downdetector.com.Some of the problems with Facebook included not being able post status updates, the page not loading at all or loading very slow, not being able to send messages over Facebook's separate Messenger app and some saying they received an error message indicating the site was doing maintenance, among other issues.Instagram users reported the app not loading and showing an error message.Some people were able to access Facebook or Instagram, or both, later in the morning and without problems. ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - A woman died from her injuries after being hit by a driver at an Encinitas intersection Friday.The 61-year-old victim was walking in a crosswalk at Encinitas Boulevard and Balour Drive just after 6 p.m., San Diego Sheriff's Department (SDSO) said.SDSO said a vehicle approached the intersection while the woman was crossing and stopped to allow her to pass. A second vehicle then approached the intersection and drove around the first vehicle to continue through the intersection, knocking the woman down.She was transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital - La Jolla with life-threatening injuries. She later died from those injuries. The woman's name has not been released.The driver charged with hitting the woman remained at the scene. SDSO said alcohol does not appear to be a factor. 831
