An incoming University of Southern California freshman died in a freeway accident over the weekend, the university confirmed in a Monday statement.Eighteen-year-old Matthew Olson was walking south on Interstate-110 when he was hit by two cars at around 2:43 a.m. on Saturday, according to a news release from the California Highway Patrol.Olson was pronounced dead at the scene by the Los Angeles Fire Department Paramedics, CHP said. He was walking on I-110 between two FasTrak lanes, according to the release."It is unknown at this time why (Olson) was walking in the freeway lanes," the release says.One person has been arrested, according to a CHP report.The incident is still under investigation.He was from Newport Beach and had graduated from Corona del Mar High School. At least eight Walmart locations have received threats over the past week after deadly shootings at two stores in recent weeks, law enforcement agencies said.The threats follow a horrific massacre at a Walmart in Texas last weekend and a deadly shooting at a store in Mississippi late last month.In Florida, Richard D. Clayton, 26, was arrested after he allegedly posted a threat on Facebook that he was about to have his gun returned and people should stay away from Walmart.He was detained Friday after an investigation by various agencies, including the FBI, the Winter Park Police Department and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.He allegedly made a threat Tuesday on a Facebook post stating, "3 more days of probation left then I get my AR-15 back. CANTON, Mich. — Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has dismissed a case against a 10-year-old Canton, Michigan, boy.The boy was previously formally charged with aggravated assault after a schoolyard game in April.On April 29, students at the Canton school were playing a game called "Tips" in the schoolyard with a rubber ball similar to a dodge ball. According to a release, the game doesn't involve throwing the ball at other players.Reports state that once the game was over, it is alleged that the 10-year-old took the ball and intentionally threw it with force, causing the 9-year-old to suffer a concussion and cuts to his face.The injured child's mother then made a complaint to local police.Worthy released the following statement on the dismissal of charges. Efforts were made to resolve this matter before it was sent to us for a charge consideration. The mother of the alleged victim had every right to go to the authorities and the authorities had an obligation to investigate. When this case was reviewed by my office, no one paid attention the race of either party. It is categorically wrong to suggest that this was charged based on race or geography.There has been quite a bit of inaccurate reporting in this case. There are also facts that played into our decision that have not, due to ethical rules, been reported. I will never try our cases in the court of public opinion or outcry. Petition drives, protests, and other public so called pressure certainly have their place in a democracy. But they should never impact what is done in a case and should not affect outcomes. Justice always should. The Juvenile Justice System, while by no means perfect, is markedly different from the adult systems in many ways for many reasons. There are certainly more options available and there should be. As I stated yesterday, often times in the appropriate matter, the result is dismissal, getting services provided, diversionary programs, and other options. Many times, cases should not be in the systems if other solutions can be implemented. Many times we will “go back to the table” and craft results and can do that if all parties cooperate. I have always been willing to keep an open mind when warranted, especially in juvenile cases. Admirably, that was tried here but we were not the table.I have no doubt that both families involved love their children and want the best for them. But I do think that there is a better way to go forward at this time. And the cooperation of all parties is needed.While the charge in this case is certainly sustainable, I have instructed my staff to dismiss this case today. It is my earnest hope that both sides will come back to the table to work out a solution that benefits both of these children. Again, I am confident that both of them are highly valued. Arizona State Representative Shawnna Bolick is asking for an investigation into what she describes as unsafe work conditions for Valley postal service workers.Bolick sent a letter yesterday to the President of the American Postal Workers Union, Mark Dimonstein, urging him investigate reports of hazardous working conditions for mail carriers because of the Arizona heat."It is shocking to hear of postal workers having to endure the extreme Arizona temperatures that result in delivery trucks, many of which do not have air conditioning, regularly reaching above 128 degrees," Bolick wrote. "Working conditions must be improved immediately to ensure the safety of mail carriers subjected to these dangerous temperatures."She says many of the workers do not have proper air condition in their vehicles, causing for unsafe conditions. According to Bolick, a worker in her district has sent her daily updates of temperature readings inside a mail carrier vehicle that average 128 degrees.Bolick says a worker even used their dashboard to cook a steak to an internal temperature of 142 degree to show how hot the vehicle gets during the day.When asked for an interview, there was not a USPS representative available, but they did send the following statement:"We want to emphasize the Postal Service works to protect its employees all year through a strong health and safety program. This includes instructions on messaging through the handheld carrier scanners, frequent service talks on recognizing heat illnesses and taking shade or hydration, and street supervision that checks on carriers during the day. Our letter carriers work hard and we appreciate that effort in all conditions."Bolick says several Phoenix area postal service employees have been sent to the hospital recently for treatment after becoming disoriented on the job.She ended the letter by asking for a cause of action from the postal service "to remedy the current situation." 1959
