SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Want to enjoy your time off but you’re on a budget? San Diego and Carlsbad are among the top ten cities in the nation for staycations. San Diego County’s beautiful landscape, sunshine, activities and theme parks drew 35 million tourists to the region in 2018. When Porch.com tallied the number of staycation hashtags around the country, Carlsbad came in third for locals finding another world in their own backyard. San Diego came in tenth place for its bay, boardwalk, and world-famous San Diego Zoo. RELATED: Break from town: Where to take a day trip from San DiegoKerri Kapich, COO of the San Diego Tourism Authority, says San Diegans love the outdoors and doing something a little out of the norm. “And to camp and have that experience, take your kids, get on the beach, stay overnight, have a campfire, its a really fun experience,” said Kapich. 7 percent of hotel rooms in San Diego are taken by locals who leave the house, and sometimes the car behind to feel a million miles away without the cost of an airline ticket. San Diegan Edna Gutierrez chose a staycation at a hotel by the bay when her father was visiting from out of town. RELATED: Tour nearly 100 iconic San Diego sites for free during 'Open House' event“And I've never been a morning person, and I would wake up early every day so I could walk to the bay....take it all in, in the morning,” Gutierrez said. “So if you can have an escape where someone is going to make your breakfast, make your bed...spoil you a little bit...that's a nice thing to have,” Kapich said. “It changes your perspective because sometimes you don't take advantage of the things you have in San Diego,” Gutierrez said. San Diego native Robert Arends chooses to take vacations two hours away in East County. RELATED: San Diego County park rangers recommend these trails in 2019“It’s pretty close, whole ‘nother world…desert oasis to yourself,” said Arends. Arends said many San Diegans don’t know about the small town of Borrego Springs, where he goes to recharge. “There's this isolation and peace and calm out there, that's a little different from the hustle and bustle of being on the coast,” said Arends. This year’s wildflower super bloom is drawing crowds but Arends plans to brave the traffic and bring back beautiful photos. Wondering where to get away? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Young adults in the U.S. are moving more frequently than they did in 1960, according to a new report by Zillow. Data from San Diego, however, paints a different picture. According to the site, 33.8 percent of young adults in 1960 lived in their current home for less than two years. In 2017, more than 45 percent of young adults had lived in their current home for less than two years. San Diego, however, bucks the trend. In America’s Finest City, in 2017 the share of young adults who lived in a home less than two years is 50.6 percent, down from 54.4 percent in 1960. The data show that young San Diegans are moving less than in 1960. Among young adults who recently moved in the San Diego area, more than 68 percent moved within the metro, while 9.4 percent moved from a different metro in the state and 22.3 percent moved from outside the state. According to Zillow, changes in workplace norms have contributed to the changes in housing tenures. Zillow also says that, rather than climb the corporate ladder, many young adults move from one role or job to the next. The typical employed Millennial has been with their current employer for 2.8 years, according to Zillow. 1205

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – While 28,000 doses of the vaccine might sound like a lot, the county says it still won’t be enough to cover health care workers at the top of the list to get it.It’s a start, but immunologist Dr. Robert Schooley says we still have a long way to go.“It’s going to take a while but at least now we understand what the endpoint will be,” said Schooley.RELATED: How a COVID-19 vaccine will be distributed to San Diego's medical workersAccording to San Diego County, the initial shipment of 28,000 vaccines will only cover 72% of the top-tier health are workers who need it. That’s not enough for long-term care residents and staff who are also in the phase 1A top-tier to receive it.The shipment will only cover the first of two doses necessary for the Pfizer vaccine. The second doses will come in subsequent shipments. While there won’t be enough doses for all the front-line workers at UCSD, it is giving them hope.“The good news is we’ll be getting quite a few doses of the vaccine," Schooley says. “We’ll be getting farther down the list than we thought we were going to get.”The next hurdle for the vaccine is gaining widespread public trust.“These vaccines have been in tens-of-thousands of people and the FDA has gone over the data extremely carefully,” said Schooley. “I certainly would have no qualms myself about getting vaccinated this afternoon.”Schooley says about 70% of the population would need to get vaccinated to reach herd immunity. He estimated that could take up to 9 months. The county expects the next shipment of vaccines in three to four weeks. 1592
