CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - A photographer in Carlsbad is helping to preserve the memory of the Greatest Generation, one portrait at a time.John Riedy works with The Greatest Generations Foundation. The group takes Veterans back to the battlefields on which they fought.During the trips, Riedy takes a portrait of each vet on their battlefield."It helps them realize that we’re not going to forget these guys," Riedy says. "When they’re gone, their legacies are going to live on."Over the last 12 years, Riedy has gone on nearly 50 trips with the Foundation and taken close to 300 portraits.For the 75th Anniversary of D-Day, he chose 75 of his favorite to hang in two galleries near Normandy and Omaha Beach."I think they were blown away to see their portraits up there," Riedy says of the reaction the Vets had when they got a first look at the galleries.Riedy says it's his personal way to honor the sacrifices they made."When you step onto Omaha beach, or you go to that cemetery at Omaha, and you see what they were up against when you see those cliffs, it's awe-inspiring," he says. "It’s like a switch flipped inside me. From them on I knew this was going to be my calling."Riedy and the Foundation have started to expand the program beyond World War II Veterans. Canadian police say an armed man crashed his truck through a gate and breached the grounds where Prime Minister Justin Trudeau lives before being arrested two hours later. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police say Trudeau was not present at the time of the incident in Ottawa on Thursday. Royal Canadian Mounted Police Deputy Commissioner Mike Duheme declined to name the suspect or talk about his motivation, only saying the man had several weapons. Police earlier identified the suspect as a member of Canada’s armed forces.The man has a bail hearing Friday. Police say he’s facing multiple charges. They say the man crashed his truck through the gate early Thursday. The truck was disabled and the suspect was spotted with a rifle before being arrested in a greenhouse.The Canadian Armed Forces are assisting the police in the investigation.''Thanks to the swift and diligent actions of our employees, the incident that unfolded earlier this morning on the grounds of Rideau Hall was quickly and safely resolved. CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) - Hundreds of Marines recovering from injuries are at Camp Pendleton this week for the Warrior Games Trials. They're competing to represent the Marines at the National Games, but also finding new ways to heal from their injuries."It helps you know you're not alone," says Lance Corporal Jay Alan Davis, who was diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder while on duty.This is LC Davis' first time at the games. He says it's been uplifting to find a sense of camaraderie among the athletes."If you're able to sit there and talk to somebody about it, they're more likely to go to you," he says. "Then you don't have to feel alone. You don't have to be alone."That's the same sentiment that brought Tisha Knickerbocker to the games in 2012. Tisha was a life-long athlete until she broke her back. Finding a way to compete still has helped her mental recovery."It improved everything," she says. "It was great. I really can't find a word that accurately describes the feeling that it gave me to get an old part of myself back."The games run from March 4-12 at Camp Pendleton. Many of the athletes will advance to the National Department of Defense Warrior Games in September in San Antonio. 1222

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - After a woman died in a jet ski crash in the Agua Hedionda Lagoon in Carlsbad on Sunday, Stephen and Aimee Cochrane were confronted with a painful memory.“I just cannot believe that this would have happened. It’s just wrong,” said Aimee.Her indignation was amplified by the fact that she and her husband were involved in a crash in the same lagoon in July of 2016.They had decided to rent a jet ski on their anniversary, something they had never done before.“We wanted to do something different,” recalled Stephen.But when they got to California Watersports at the Agua Hedionda Lagoon, they had second thoughts.“It was wild. It was mayhem out there,” said Stephen, describing the busy activity on the water.Despite their hesitations, they decided to go for it. But before they had even completed one lap around the buoys, they said they were t-boned by another rider.“We both flew off the jet ski,” remembers Aimee.Stephen said he momentarily blacked out. Aimee remembers swimming over to him and seeing him face down in the water.He was eventually pulled onto a boat and taken into an ambulance. He said he ended up with three broken ribs and a fractured sternum.Aimee suffered some cuts and bruises on her legs, but no broken bones.Stephen said he had to take three weeks off of work and pay ,000 in out of pocket medical expenses. He says he still has pain in his chest from the injury.After the crash, they said they had no contact with the owners of the rental company. They said they were unaware if the company had made any changes to prevent future crashes.10News spoke to an employee at California Waterspouts who said they would not be providing any statements. An email to the company’s manager also went unanswered.Carlsbad Police say they are still investigating the fatal collision from Sunday. 1846
