(KGTV) - Students at El Camino High School have a chance to put their stamp on pop culture.They're designing shoes for the Vans Custom Culture competition.El Camino High School is one of just 500 schools in the country to be picked for the contest. More than 200 students submitted designs at the school, but only two will advance to the national competition.Sophomore Isiah Duran is one of the students whose design was chosen."I basically did what I thought was Oceanside," he says. "The pier, sunsets, the beach."The students could make designs based on two categories, "Local Flavor" and "Off the Wall.""It resonates with the younger culture," says El Camino Art Teacher Diego De La Luz. "It resonates with activities that range from biking to skateboarding and really just the Southern California vibe which Oceanside is all about."The winner will receive ,000 for their school's art department. Vans will also endow a scholarship for a student from the winning school to attend the Laguna Art Institute.De La Luz says the students will decide how to spend the money at the school if they win. He adds that ,000 would provide a big boost to the art department, especially as districts tighten their budgets and art programs are often among the first to be cut."Having that opportunity for the cash prize would cushion some of our artistic ambitions for the students," says De La Luz.Students say it's pretty amazing to try and design for a company they already love."I'm wearing Vans right now," says Junior Aymee Locke. "If I had my own design on a shoe and I get to show that off to everyone, I would totally do that. I think that's super cool."The schools have to turn in their designs by April 16. (KGTV) - An Oceanside homeowner got a shock at work when his phone alerted him to intruders inside his tented condo.James says around 5 in the morning in late September, his heart dropped when the security alert showed him a real-time image: an intruder, wearing a headlamp in his 11-year-old daughter's bedroom."Seeing a stranger in my house, especially my daughter's room, is very nerve wracking," said James.His daughter wasn't home. No one was. His condo, along with the entire Pamilla Del Oro community was wrapped in a fumigation tent. That day was the last of a three-day fumigation.As it turns out, the burglars had sliced the tent and removed a screen before making an appearance on James' phone. He called 9-1-1. Police showed up soon after."They set up a perimeter and called the guys out. One came crawling out," said James.James showed 10News a photo of that man handcuffed. Two other intruders captured on by the cameras got away. None of them wore masks. They didn't take much from the home, only a few fishing knives."We took our valuables out before the fumigation," said James. OCOTILLO WELLS (KGTV) - Two people died after a crash in Ocotillo Wells Saturday night, according to Cal Fire. Two cars collided just after 7 p.m.near Highway 78 and Quarry Road. Two people died at the scene, Cal Fire confirmed. The road is closed in the area for an unknown amount of time to investigate the accident. Cal Fire asks that people avoid the scene of the accident.There is no word on what caused the accident at this time or how many other people were in the cars. 500

One California family narrowly survived two life-threatening situations less than 24 hours apart, but they just feel lucky to be alive.Carmen Edman described her harrowing escape from Malibu on November 8 as her family home was destroyed by wildfire."The fire was everywhere, " Carmen told CNN affiliate KCAL/KCBS.The frantic moments came just a day after her daughter, Deseriee, survived a deadly mass shooting at Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, when a gunman burst into the bar with a handgun on November 7. By the time the gunfire stopped, 12 people were dead."I was in panic mode since Wednesday night -- since that phone call -- and stress levels were off the charts," Carmen Edman said.The Edman family got to safety, but their Malibu home burned to the ground."Two-near death experiences that you just don't expect," Deseriee Edman said."I'm trying to stay as strong as possible for my family and friends, and I'm trying to look at everything as positively as possible even though it's pretty hard to do so in these type of situations," she told the affiliate.The Edmans credit Ventura County Sheriff's Sgt. Ron Helus with saving their family.Sgt. Helus was fatally shot when he responded to the call of a shooting at the Borderline Bar and Grill. The Edmans attended his funeral procession Thursday."It's really tragic that this happened in our city, in Borderline, and that Ron had to pass," Carmen Edman said. "It's just tragic." 1458

(KGTV) -- North County residents are frustrated over a rise in the number of homeless people in their community and Oceanside’s police department is reaching out.A team is working to get homeless people help. The team works to build trust among their homeless clients in hopes the trust will lead to them accepting help.Their client Joel relapsed after nine months. He wants help but can’t get a prescription after losing his ID. Thanks to recent city funding, a second social worker was hired to the team.A separate team works to tackle homeless encampments in the riverbed.
