BEIJING, July 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping on Thursday urged members and officials of the Communist Party of China (CPC) to emulate the achievements of an official who died on duty after six years of dedicated work as a village Party secretary.Xi made the statement in Beijing while meeting with attendants to a ceremony to mark the release of a movie about the Party secretary's life in the village, and that of a book based on his diaries.The official, Shen Hao, had been a provincial government official in Anhui in central China, but was later assigned as a village Party secretary in 2004.Shen's devotion to his job brought about significant changes in the village and twice his term was extended at the request of the people in the village, though the work eventually cost him his life. He fell ill through constant overwork and died on November 6, 2009.Xi hailed Shen as a role model for CPC members and officials and urged them to maintain close ties with the people.

BEIJING, June 14 (Xinhua) -- China's State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters (SFDH) has sent four working teams Monday to help flood control in provinces and regions pounded by heavy rains that triggered floods and mud slides.The flood control authority held a meeting Monday night with the Ministry of Water Resources agreeing to dispatch one more working team to central Hunan Province to help consolidate river banks along the upper reaches of the Xiangjiang River and ensure the safety of reservoirs.Three other teams were separately sent Monday afternoon to Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and the eastern province of Fujian.From 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, torrential rains pelted Guangxi, provinces of Guangdong, Fujian, Hunan and Jiangxi. Some regions even saw rainstorms, according to the SFDH.At least 24 people are missing after flash floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains engulfed two vehicles in Fujian Province Monday, according to a local official.The authority asked the Guangxi team to help with floods control and mud slides prevention work there. It ordered the team sent to Fujian to help with rescue work.The team for Xinjiang will help investigate the collapse of a reservoir dam in Xinjiang on Monday morning after heavy rains on the previous night.The local government had evacuated more than 200 families living downstream the reservoir. No casualties are reported so far.
BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) - Temperatures as high as 41 degrees Celsius continued to grill south China this week, but local Chinese are popping up with cool ways to cope with the heat.Every morning this summer, thousands of residents in the eastern Chinese city of Hanzhou rush to air-raid shelters, not to escape air attacks, but summer heat.In the capital of Zhejiang Province, many city dwellers have found their summer resorts in the city' s nine bomb shelters, which were dug beneath hummocks in the 1960s to defend against "American imperialist invaders" .In one shelter in southern Hanzhou, elders are watching swordsman TV opera or playing mahjong, while children play hide-and-seek in the labyrinth-like place.Temperatures inside the shelter were 22 degrees Celsius, compared to 38 degrees Celsius outdoors, according to a LED screen above one entrance."We old folks don' t like to be cooped up in air-conditioned rooms," said Ye Chulin, a local retiree. "Here the air is fresher and we can associate with many friends."The shelters, with benches, LCD TVs, and other newly installed comforts, were opened to the public free of charge and have apparently seen more visitors than back in the Cold War years.In fact, more than 3,000 residents frequent the shelters to find relief from the summer heat every day, said Cheng Zhiguo, an official with the municipal civil air defense administration.A resident surnamed Xu told Xinhua that spending his leisure time in the shelter could save him ten yuan (1.5 U.S. dollars) in air-conditioning costs per day."And this is not just about saving money, but it is also more environmentally friendly," added Xu.In the neighboring province of Jiangxi, residents are swarming into free, air-conditioned libraries to stay cool, and to learn!In the Jiangxi Provincial Library, chairs in all reading rooms are fully occupied. BEIJING, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu has urged beefing up late rice planting in the wake of floods to ensure a good rice harvest.Hui stressed that soil in the flood-affected regions should be drained as soon as possible. Local authorities should restore damaged farmland to good conditions and make sure late rice is planted on time.In his recent instructions on late rice production and flood relief in agriculture, he also ordered local authorities to improve service for farmers and ensure seeds are supplied for planting.Efforts should also be made to strengthen field management and to intensify disaster and pest disease prevention, said Hui.As of July 21, more than 7 million hectares of farmland in China had been destroyed by torrential rains and floods, according to data from the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.
