SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A coalition of regional partners joined together Thursday to announce the San Diego County Childcare Provider Grant Program, an initiative that will distribute million in coronavirus relief funding to childcare providers impacted by COVID-19.The coalition, which includes the County of San Diego, The San Diego Foundation, Child Development Associates and YMCA of San Diego County, will open the application period Monday. The San Diego County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to distribute million of Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act funding to eligible childcare providers in San Diego County."The childcare sector is very important, as our economy cannot be sustainable if parents do not have safe places for their children to be cared for and educated while they are working," said Supervisor Nathan Fletcher, co- chair of the county's COVID-19 subcommittee. "This new million grant program will help childcare providers make their centers safe during the coronavirus pandemic and allow them to remain open so parents can return to work."Funding will be allocated based on predetermined categories outlined in the CARES Act agreement. Large family childcare providers -- licensed to care for a maximum of 14 children -- will be eligible to receive up to ,500 and small family childcare providers -- licensed to care for a maximum of eight children -- will be eligible for up to ,750. Non-government-contracted licensed providers will be eligible to receive up to 5 per child capacity, based on childcare license.Partially-funded government-contracted licensed childcare centers such as HeadStart will be eligible to receive up to 5 per non-subsidized child, not to exceed license capacity. Non-government-contracted, license- exempt group care providers -- including summer day camps and community youth clubs such as Boys & Girls Clubs -- that serve school-age children up to 12 years old will be eligible to receive up to 0 per child capacity."This funding helps prioritize access to high-quality childcare for all families, helps provide a professional wage for hardworking providers, and helps strengthen the childcare system," said Baron Herdelin-Doherty, president & CEO of the YMCA of San Diego County.Eligible childcare providers will be able to apply for funding online or in print in eight different languages -- English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Russian, Somali, Haitian Creole and Arabic -- and the coalition will distribute the funds.Providers can visit SDFoundation.org/ChildcareGrants to learn more. San Diegans already pay some of the nation's highest gas taxes, and they're about to fork over even more at the pump.On Wednesday, the state will raise the per-gallon tax by 12 cents to 41.7 cents per gallon. That's on top of existing state and federal taxes drivers pay on regular gasoline. Gov. Jerry Brown and the state legislature approved the increase earlier this year to help fund state and local transportation projects. There's an interactive project map here. The new tax is supposed to generate about billion over the next 10 years. "For us just regular people, we don't have the extra money to pay for gas, especially with the commute," said La Mesa resident Anneke Crowder, who was filling up Monday. But there is one force at play that could lessen the hit from the increase. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 24-year-old La Jolla man who was wearing a Jesus costume when he allegedly sucker-punched a San Diego police officer at a Gaslamp District Halloween street festival was charged Thursday with battery of a peace officer and resisting arrest. Eric Van Vleet, who was arrested in Idaho's Cassia County less than a week after the alleged Nov. 1 attack and extradited to San Diego, faces up to three years in prison if convicted. Deputy District Attorney Will Hopkins said the unnamed officer was breaking up a fight amid a crowd of people outside the Atomic bar about 1 a.m. when Van Vleet allegedly yelled, ``(Expletive) the police'' and punched the lawman in the side of the head. Kohnen said Van Vleet is a majority partner in his companies, which are involved in advertising for medical products. The officer, a three-year member of the San Diego Police Department, was taken to a hospital for treatment of a roughly inch-long laceration and other trauma. The officer missed a week of work with post-concussion symptoms, according to Hopkins. Kohnen emphasized that his client has no criminal record and disagreed with San Diego County Superior Court Judge Jay Bloom's decision to set bail at 0,000. -SAN CLEMENTE ISLAND (CNS) - The remains of seven U.S. Marines and a Navy sailor were recovered Friday after going missing near San Clemente Island when their amphibious vehicle sank during a training mission last month.The remains were recovered during underwater salvage operations, the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force announced Friday evening. The remains will be transferred to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware to be prepared for burial."Our hearts and thoughts of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit are with the families of our recovered Marines and Sailor," said Col. "We hope the successful recovery of our fallen warriors brings some measure of comfort."The U.S. military announced Tuesday it had located the amphibious assault vehicle that sank last week off the coast of San Diego County, killing nine young servicemen, and confirmed the presence of human remains where the vessel came to rest on the sea floor.The naval Undersea Rescue Command made the discovery near San Clemente Island on Monday using video systems remotely operated aboard the HOS Dominator, a merchant vessel whose crew specializes in undersea search and rescue.The amphibious troop-transport vehicle was en route to a waiting ship during a maritime training mission about 80 miles west of Encinitas when it foundered for unknown reasons about 5:45 p.m. July 30, according to Lt. SAN DIEGO (AP) — The sole suspect in a fatal shooting at a Southern California synagogue pleaded not guilty to federal hate crimes and other charges Tuesday.John T. Earnest entered the plea a week after a grand jury returned a 113-count indictment that largely mirrors a complaint filed shortly after his arrest on April 27. The indictment added four counts of using and carrying a firearm during commission of a violent crime.Earnest's parents attended the brief hearing but did not seem to exchange eye contact with their 19-year-old son. The suspect spoke only once, to acknowledge his name.Two days after the shooting, the family said their son's actions "were informed by people we do not know, and ideas we do not hold.""To our great shame, he is now part of the history of evil that has been perpetrated on Jewish people for centuries," they said in their only public statement since the shooting.Earnest looked blankly ahead as one of his attorneys argued that shackles should be removed from his wrists, ankles and waist during the hearing. Peter Ko, a prosecutor, countered, "He tried to commit mass murder," and the judge, Michael Berg, denied the defense request.Earnest also faces charges of murder and attempted murder for the attack on Chabad of Poway on the last day of Passover. One person died and three were injured.He is being represented by public defenders.
