SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- On a clear, sunny day in February, the sound of a bell announces the arrival of Naval Commander John C. Witte as he boards the USS Annapolis. He's in charge of the roughly 160 sailors who serve aboard the submarine, one of several boats stationed at Naval Base Point Loma."Submarining takes a lot of mental toughness and these guys will work long hours but they'll do what it takes to get the mission done," Witte told 10News. As you can imagine space is limited on board, nearly every inch is utilized, especially in the command area. But that's not to say the crew doesn't ever use their eyes. The periscope is still something the submarine crew utilizes regularly. "We may want to look at what other ships are doing we may want to try to observe other navy's activity stuff like that," Witte said. Everyone on board has a specialized skill, but because of the isolation that comes with being underwater for long periods of time, everyone has to take on multiple roles. When it's time to eat, the culinary specialists use the limited supply of ingredients to make every meal and also bake things like fresh bread and cookies pretty often. "We don't carry a lot of pre-made bread because it takes up too much room so a lot of our bread is made fresh a lot of our cookies are made fresh so its a pretty good," Witte explained. (KGTV) - As the country waits to hear what happened to missing Fort Hood soldier Vanessa Guillen, a San Diego group for female veterans is ready to offer support for anyone who needs it.Related: Army confirms identity of suspect in Vanessa Guillen case who died of self-inflicted gunshot woundGuillen was last seen April 22, 2020 and while the Army has said there are no signs of sexual assault, her family says otherwise. Now, posts with the tag #IAmVanessaGuillen are circulating online, as people share their own stories of sexual assault in the military.Billiekai Boughton with the San Diego Women Veterans Network said any conversation like this can bring up hard memories for female veterans. She said while many women have a positive experience in the military, four out of five females report harassment or assault. The goal of her group is to support women through any of this pain. She says this is important in a community like San Diego which has about 26,000 female veterans.“For those of us who have been in the military and have had negative experiences, this can be a memory (sic) of feeling unsafe,” said Boughton.The group’s website says the most common request of women veterans in San Diego is to meet other women veterans. Their primary goal is to create a community for female military veterans, while also encouraging community service and policy change, which encourages and embraces the positive traits female vets have to offer.“Our friends remind us how strong we are. Our friends remind us we’re okay, and we can come together when we’re not,” she said.Boughton said they also are a bridge for any other resources a woman might need and they can connect people with groups for any help they might need in life.The veterans crisis hotline is 800-273-8255. 1808

SAN DIEGO (KTGV)— A homeless man and convicted rapist accused of sexually assaulting a woman at an East Village bar in November faced his accuser in San Diego Superior Court. Gary Cushinberry, who's accused of multiple counts of sexual assault and attempted rape, pleaded not guilty. The judge ordered all media to conceal the victim’s identity, and to refer to her as Jane Doe. Jane Doe took the stand and recalled what happened on the evening of November 5th. She said she was at Amplified Kitchen and Beer Garden in East Village, celebrating with some colleagues.After having a few drinks, she headed to her car. She admitted she was drunk at the time, and her memory was hazy. But she did remember the moment her bottom touch the ground.“He was touching underneath the blanket, and I just remember being shocked. Uh, next he further proceeded to put his hand in my pants,” Doe said. While he attacked her on the ground underneath a dirty blanket, he tried to drug her with what she thought was a meth pipe, Doe continued. Detective Carlos Munoz of the San Diego Police Department also spoke in open court. After the case was assigned to him, he monitored surveillance cameras in the area. The detective found footage of a homeless man fitting Gary Cushinberry’s description, pulling Jane Doe into a bush next to her car. The two were not in frame for the next 25 minutes, until video captured Jane Doe speeding away from the parking lot, back into Amplified, where she later reported the assault.“It’s like you imagine a fight or flight. And I didn’t really fight and I didn’t flight. I just froze,” Doe said. Cushinberry, who is already a convicted rapist in Indiana, returned to the frame, just two minutes later. “When he walks up toward the intersection, or the corner, he is adjusting his belt, he is adjusting his waist,” Detective Munoz said. The next day, Jane Doe provided information for a suspect sketch.Officers also took her to Palomar Hospital to run a rape kit. DNA Criminalist Adam Dutra of the San Diego Police Department Crime Lab tested the DNA swab taken from the front button and zipper of Jane Doe’s shorts.“There was strong support for the inclusion of Mr. Cushinberry as the 98% contributor,” Dutra said. Cushinberry’s past convictions include rape in 1995, sexual battery in 1997, and recently, felony robbery in San Diego.His next court appearance is on December 19th. 2407

SAN DIEGO, CA (KGTV) The two-year-old twin girls who were in a truck that sped off of Sunset Cliffs Saturday are recovering.That’s according to a family friend who started a GoFundMe campaign to help the twins’ mother with any expenses related to the crash.“She’s a great mother, she’s sticking strong through all of this, the girls are doing good,” said family friend Adrianna Lopez. “Money should be the last thing she needs to worry about, it’s just about keeping herself sane through all of this, her kids their health, mental, physical, everything.”Lopez and a family member tell 10News the girls are now stable. She said the twins just turned two years old in May.On Saturday, the toddlers were riding in a truck that San Diego Police say was driven by their father.Officers were warned to be on the lookout for a suicidal man threatening to drive off of the Coronado Bridge.Cellphone GPS data located the father, now identified as 47-year-old Robert Brians, at Sunset Cliffs.SDPD K9 Officer Jonathan Wiese was close by and jumped into action after the truck went over the cliffside.He and other first responders were able to save the twins and Brians.“The action that the first responders did, we’re just forever grateful, forever grateful,” said Lopez.Brians was arrested for two counts of attempted murder, two counts of kidnapping, one count of burglary, and two counts of child cruelty.The San Diego District Attorney’s office said is has until Wednesday to make a filing decision.
